I went to NZ in 2002. Pungarehu looked to radical/big for me, and nobody else there. I also went to Weld Road, which was busier, another 3 sailors, side shore in a westerly. Oakura Beach Park for cross-on B&J in a northerly. My favourite place in the area was Waitara in a westerly. Very easy place to sail. 22 years ago and I can still remember a lot of the sessions I had.
Woo Hoo New Zealand!! We are so lucky to have Taranaki, Pungarehu has a nice long wave and there are other spots all over to be able to sail in almost any wind direction. There are both Starboard and Port tack options too......and some fun onshore if you are inclined...
Taranaki is one of my top places I have ever sailed besides the Gorge. And there is never more than a handful of people sailing. Stunning views of the volcano wherever spot your sailing. Great food and lodging.
great videos. when the conditions are perfect for windsurfing the surfers don't show up. especially in this remote locations. it's windsurfing paradise 👏👏👏

Been there last year and had some of the best waves I’ve ever had, but make sure to bring some spare gear and a buddy if you dont like to sail on your own.
Really cool locals and nice surroundings too and if there is no wind the chance of getting at least a good surf is high

I went to taranaki in 2008. Perfect conditions but impossible to find gear to rent!!
If you’re heading back sometime look up Water Nomads, they rent windsurf kit in New Zealand
