People, who missed out on watching this match, let me tell you something. This was just an ATP250 and a quarterfinal at that. But still, this is one of the greatest three setter matches of all time.
A request to Tennis TV... Please upload the full match on TH-cam for people who missed out.
For 90% of the match, my heart was in my mouth.. adrenaline running in me was way too high... Just imagine what would've happened to the ones playing this match. At 38 years, grinding till the very end... Nadal is the greatest gladiator this game has ever seen.
And Navone, what a grind. I am sorry you had to lose, but there's only one victor in Tennis and there are no draws. If by any chance you see this comment, know that you've gained a big fan. Other than in matches against Nadal, I'll be rooting for you every single time. You gave the God of Clay a taste of his own medicine on Clay. He did win the match, but you'll forever be etched in my memory for the fight you just showed. Hats off, brother!
Finally... O Rafa! There are no superlatives to describe you... Been a huge fan of you since 2008, and will forever remain to be. I don't care what stats say... You're the greatest Tennis player there ever was, there ever will be. Umpteen times, you've come back from career ending injuries and shown what you're made of. Everyone knows that if you hadn't been injured that many times, you'd have way more grand slams and weeks at no 1. You inspire me to be the best version of me... To never give up at any point in time... To fight back with every single ounce of energy! I am fortunate to live at the same time when you are an active Tennis player...

Almost 20 years following this guy, not because I (and we) didn't have anything better to do, but because he "makes" you, compels you to follow this attitude, these matches, this rhythm, these incredible shots, these trajectories of the ball, the styles he has developed along the way and all these other elements that make the whole sport more thrilling when he is playing.
Yes, we still see good matches without Rafa on the tour and we did before him. But the passion, the grittiness and the toughness skyrocket once every time he's back.
He isn't doing a farewell tour, he's trying to win things again the only way he knows how to (albeit slightly cautiously at times).
He might not win tons in the end or still, not everybody has to like Rafa, but damnit, he makes the sport better, more interesting and in part, he's made it what it is today (together with all other great champions of course).
Sorry for the length, for anyone who's read this far, but it just happens when you still see this commitment, this passion in a "preparatory" or "warm-up" event in theory.
Anyway, I don't have any new words for this guy anymore, I keep commenting more or less the same things over the past 6-7 years more or less. I hope he plays till he's 45, cause I really miss this intensity on the tour when he's not around. Alcaraz kind of sweetens the deal a little bit, but even he is not at Rafa's level yet.
Plus Rafa has integrated other styles in his game too (volleys, drop shots etc). It's like he's playing a little like Fed too.
Legend to say the least, I don't know.
He's a huge inspiration and a hugely positive sight to see.
Well done, Rafael. You deserve all the praise you are getting..
    Bravo... : )

He has had a wrist injury in the early season and has most of the key GOAT records. He has nothing left to prove and is only interested in the biggest tournaments (considering he has the most big tournament titles). So of course he plays less tournaments.

Unbelievably great from Rafa. This is a very positive sign. While playing for nearly 4 hours looks bad but in Rafa’s case it’s a good indication of where he is regarding his health. Compared to being unable to play a few months ago to now. To fight back and last that long is very good news.

For those who dont play tennis but only watch. Let me tell you at recreational level one hour of tennis at full tempo is tiring. Its a bloody good workout.
Tennis is basically HIIT or high intensity interval training. It works more or less every muscle in the body. Its high level cardio. Not static and a full body workout. Combined with the skill needed, reflexes and agility and precision. Its one of the toughest sports on the planet.
2 hours of training or play and people in there 20s with great fitness will be spent. The average joe with no stamina who doesnt exercise will be dead. Might have a coronary on a hot day if there cardiovascular system gets overwhelmiled.
So for Nadal to play 4 hours on clay ( clay is grueling compared to hard court) at 38 years of age at this level with joint issues and injuries is truly astonishing.
He is arguably the best ever along with federer and Novak .
For the sake of his body he needs to stop so he can live without being in a wheelchair in his 60s.
