Thanks for this. Very helpful. I need the basics though. I haven't been able to find how to make presets in the first place and put them in order so the ones I need are close to each other in the menu.
Like a personal "Rig Rundown"? I guess I could do that. My live setup is pretty simple though. I play through the RP1000 direct into the house PA. If needed, I bring my EV ELX112p as a self-monitor. I sometimes use the EV as an amp in rehearsals and smaller settings. I guess I could do a video on that, and run through some of my live presets as well... Thanks! Interesting idea.
Just purchased this unit a couple days ago as I was looking to simplify my setup and noticed the gain problem you described. Thanks for the video it definitely helped me out. I'm using mine in pedalboard mode with my Mesa Mark V, with the RP1000's amp/cab turned off and Amp Loop on, and was wondering how the FX loop volume interacts with the gain staging and where it should be set at? Overall, I love this unit for effects!!
It is great for effects only using 4CM. It is tricky to decide what the FX loop level should be at on the MkV. Mesa usually recommends starting at noon and working your way up or down depending on what you're hearing. My guess would be to set it less than half (probably closer to 10 o'clock). You don't want to clip the amp return on the RP. But you'll have to experiment to find the best setting for your use.
Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I think I'll have to experiment on the FX loop level to find the sweet spot between almost enough, and too much. I'm using the 4 Cable Method for sure, and with the amp/cab sims off, it really does a great job without altering the tone of my MkV; which is great. I was shocked at how good the effects are in this unit, and for the price it was my best choice. The Whammy pedal is worth the price alone. One other thing though, you mentioned something about a Beta firmware for this? Do you recommend it, and how do I get it? Thanks again!
I own The Rp500, Great for recording! But weak in live situations in front of an Amplifier, distorsions sound too digital and poor for me, but still have great features. Good video, thanks!
I have a question. How meny parameters you can assign under expression pedal at that same time?? I bought this unit and I love sounds but I can not find how to assign more then one parameter under expression pedal. Looks like that can be assign everything but just one will be controlled. I am right?? Please for help. Pete
When I set my presets above 30, the master level can't go above 5 to 10 or else the amp I'm running it itno can't go above 2. It becomes totally obnoxious and uncontrollable.
very good video man , it helps , clear and fast explanation i've been playing on a unit like this in a friend house and thanks to ur videos it makes is so much easier to get through it and overall it's an excellent unit and i'm getting one for myself , again thanks for the tutorial , very helpful .\../
Hi, I was looking for a collection of user submitted tone patches for this unit online but most of the download links are dead, do you have any ZIP files available to share please?
Thanks for a great video. I have had this unit for a few years and have "tried" to use it many times live, however I tend to always go back to my analogue Boss pedals. Now dont get me wrong I would love to love this unit as I think it has much potential, nut for some reason I tend to find that it and every other MFX I have tried tend to be brittle and sharp in sound when used live. With headphones however it sounds GREAT, lots of dynamic range etc. Do you have any advice for live situations on stage thanks?
Thanks! The best suggestion I can make is to dial in your presets at full stage volume. Read up on the Fletcher-Munson Effect to understand why: www.webervst.com/fm.htm In short, something that sounds good at low volume (or with headphones) will sound much more harsh as the volume goes up. That said, I've found all the digital modeling devices I've used sound somewhat "funny" in the high end. I run my RP1000 direct to FOH and am satisfied with the sound, but I'm willing to settle for less knowing the limits of my budget.
Does the rp's amp modeling use the amp volume in simulation, for instance would you have to crank the amp volume in the sim on a jcm 800 to simulate that cranked Marshall sound or is it not that effective?
+Matt Newsome In my experience, it doesn't. When you turn the amp volume up/down, all it does is change the volume. It doesn't really mimic power tube saturation or anything like that. You have to play around with other settings to make up for it.
Jonathan Beals I am running my rp 500 into a quilter toneblock, I am new to this kind of set up so have been wondering about unity gain, maybe its just me but I feel cranking the marshalls like mastervolume, jump panel in their volume section I get more dynamics and response
Jonathan Beals I just spoke to digitech they said their amp modeling includes volume break up, maybe setting master volume to unity with modeled amp volume and then adjusting them all with preset volume to balance each other, say a cranked marshall volume at 99 on amp, master at 75 and preset at 60 would balance a mesa triple volume at 5.5, master at 75 and preset at like 65-70?
Sure. Lots of ways to achieve unity gain. I can't say I feel much of a difference in the dynamics either way. I just went with the way that seemed to work best for me.
Hey Jonathan, thanks for all your input. Looking to get the RP 1000 and toss my L6 floor pod +. I plan on using the RP in PB mode and running stereo w/ xlr through super nice sound mixer. Are there any videos / audo s
Hi Jonathan and great video! I've been a ToneLab LE user for many years and have always ran it straight into either my NMV Marshall or my BF Fender Pro Reverb amp. When you run straight into an amp with your RP 1000,do you disable the amp/cab mode or do you tweak with it enabled? I just bought an RP1000 and going through the learning curve...Thx.
Great video. I bought one of these back when they first came out and hooked it up to my JCM 2000 half stack, even using the send / return, and it still sounded like shit. It was all harsh and biting. My amp sounds great tonally, so I would only be using this once in a while on certain songs. I don't want to jack up my tone on my amp. The other guitarist in my band uses a Boss unit, and it sounds fine. So I am taking it out of the box again after 10 yrs and trying again. This was a very helpful video. So, when I use this through my Marshall half stack, what kind of sound should I be dialing in on the amp to get the most faithful replication of the intended sound? In my experience, once I turn up the volume, these digital racks get very harsh sounding. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Thanks in advance.
Your amp will sound better than any of the modeled amps, so I would use it in the 4 cable method and disable all amp/cab models. Then you are getting all the tone from your amp and the unit is being used for effects only.
You gig with the RP? If so, how much and how's the housing and controls holding up since you got it? I have a GNX3000 which has a metal housing but does have plastic control knobs. So far so good, but I do worry about it at times in certain situations. It also sounds like the amp models the RP & the GNX have in common were not remodeled for the RP as I have done some serious tweaking over the years to get some good usable tones I like and still do so on occasion to see exactly what I can muster out of it trying varying methods with amp & cab warps in all sorts of combinations. I have presets on my PC just for experimentation with seeking the best possible tone I can squeeze out of it. Doubt I'll ever be 100% satisfied as has been the case for various amps I've tried over the years. Hughes & Kettner has gotten me the closest to the tone I am always seeking. I rant. :)
Well, this video is 3 years old now and I no longer use the RP. I had it for about 5 years if memory serves. I've since upgraded to the AX8 and Helix. The RP is on a shelf now and is as good as new aside from the dust and a few scuffs/scratches. Never had anything fail on it. I had a GNX4 (which is the same build-wise as your GNX3000) prior to the RP. For me, the switches failed on that after a while, which is why I upgraded to the RP initially. I heard they upgraded the models slightly for the RP, but I certainly couldn't tell much of a difference. While the base models sound pretty much the same, the big loss moving from a GNX to the RP is that the RP does not have that warp function. Because of that, it would be very difficult to port over any of your GNX settings. Best of luck with your tone quest!
Hi Jonathan, I know it's been awhile since this video was made but besides Metallica tones which I like, can I use the RP1000 for Praise & Worship tones?
Not sure it is the best for that. The reverbs/delays are pretty limited and modern church music seems to have a lot of ambient U2-esque tones. For more straight forward tones, yeah, but maybe not for the really ambient stuff. Just not sure it would be flexible enough.
does anyone else have to shut off the pedal after saving a change in order for the adjustment to take effect if changing to a different channel and returning back?
Thanks for this. Very helpful. I need the basics though. I haven't been able to find how to make presets in the first place and put them in order so the ones I need are close to each other in the menu.
Thank you for sharing. Please post more tips!
Thanks! Will do. Any particular topics you're interested in seeing videos for?
Jonathan Beals Anything would be appreciated. How about how you would use it in a live setup???

Sadly, you can only link one parameter change per switch.

No, sorry. All the links are dead because Digitech abandoned support of the units. I don't know of anyone who catalogued/archived any of the data.
Thanks for a great video. I have had this unit for a few years and have "tried" to use it many times live, however I tend to always go back to my analogue Boss pedals. Hi Jonathan, thanks for your tutorials...have you ever tried to play your RP1000 trough a Tech 21 Power Engine?
Please show how to set delay

That's more than likely the effect of how the signal is hitting your Quilter than it is the modelling inside the RP.

Is it possible to use the volume pedal instead of a lead boost?
Absolutely. You can set the "low" and "high" values of the volume pedal, so you can easily use it for lead/rhythm volume control.
Thanks Jonathan!!

Hi, nice video, you recommend use a Beta Firmware with the Rp 1000?, thank you.
I haven't had any problems with it (that I know of), so sure.
are your patches available for down load ?
I want to know how did you get that presets?
I made them.

That's weird. Never happened to me. Are you using X-Edit or doing it on the unit? Have you tried a factory reset?
