If you are using the 'Mascot dodge' to get a cheaper fare you need to consider three things:
    (1) The buses are not as frequent as the trains, so expect it will take somewhat longer and involve dragging your luggage somewhat further
    (2) Know where Mascot Station and the 400 / 420 bus stops are located (especially if you are travelling TO the airport). They're not hard to find, but aren't entirely obvious either.
    (3) The 400 and 420 run in both directions but all services approach the airport loop bus stops going the same direction. To get to Mascot you need a service going in the direction of Bondi Junction (400) or EastGardens (420). I don't think you will be using a night bus. They mostly run after the trains stop, and because Sydney Airport shuts down from about 11 pm.
The stop where you get out in Mascot is not the first bus stop you will pass (so don't get stressed), but the first the 400/420 services stop at along that route (it's in Coward street, and the station is back the way you came, then turn first right into Bourke Street and look for the Mascot Station (underground) entrance. If you're going to the airport, look for the Coward Street bus stop where all the other poverty stricken backpackers with bags are gathering.
If you are at the International Terminal, another option is to walk to the next station in the opposite direction (Wolli Creek).
    Have fun!

Quay is not 'kay'; it's pronounced 'key'. The wharf (or Quay) was once semi-circular in shape. The name was shortened to 'Circular Quay' and the name has stuck, even though now it is square shaped.

Is it okay for two people to share a Opal card?

Yes, as long as it's not on the same trip. If both people are on the same bus/train then they will each need their own Opal card.
