    Came here to this channel after your joint video discussion with Military History Visualised - have to say love it, love it, love it! The level of detail is great and I really like your (what I at least feel to be) measured and reasonable approach to these things. Thank you for your videos so far, looking forward to catching up on your channel. Cheers!

    Great video about a much overlooked tank, which like the M3 Lee or the PzKw38t, I appreciate mostly for its aesthetics.
    btw, "Luchs" pronounced like "looks" as in "If Luchs could kill..."and "Spähwagen" is more like "shpay wagon" (which I guess is what a veterinarian drives)

      ok, I must admit I'd been a bit quick with my praise.. well at least he knows that Ausf stands for Ausfuehrung - now he probably should be told that in german, you wouldn't say "ausf" but "ausfuehrung" just as you wouldn't say "mk" but "mark" in english.

    Ohhh, the Marder II's(Sd.kfz. 132) guns are quite a subject :D
    You are pretty good at saying Fahrgestell.
    The Pz II Ausf D and E were indeed worse offroad than the standard variants. (Well at least this is what I read about them.)Torsion bar suspension for tanks was still a new thing in the late 1930's and technological immaturity (maybe) was the reason why they performed poorly.
    I hope the next series will be just as good and informative as this one was.
    Until then, keep up the good work and have a nice day!

    Excellent series. At 20:02 you call the Marder a "stopgag measure", in reality, it's a stopgap measure.

  • @adlerarmory8382

    MAGAZINE, not clip. The differences are major. A "clip" just holds cartridge cases together for feeding in a weapon, a magazine holds the cartridges as well as contains part of the feed mechanism, example the spring and follower.

    I've always wondered if the Germans had given the Panzer 2 (when they were obsolete) a new turret with the MK 108 auto cannon with its high capacity Mine Shell.
    I think it would have been very effective in areas with a lot of enemy infantry.
    What do you guys think

    • @thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368
      @thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm guessing once the tank was obsolete, they found that a better use for them was conversion to other uses such as the Marder II tank destroyer.

    • @Wallyworld30
      @Wallyworld30 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Throughout the war when a tank became obsolete they removed the turret and mounted as big a gun as the chassis could support. Sometimes bigger then the chassis could support for the lulz. J/K it was because they were desperate.

      Thank you for the kind words. According to a quick search online, 22 Pz II ausf J tanks were built, so it was a pretty small production run.

    I have always thought the Ferdinand AT should have had the Pz. 1 twin-mg turret on top for anti-infantry ... way up there they could have seen everything ...

    It's 1923 on March 19, 2019. I selected episode #4 instead of searching out Scotty Kilmer's automotive advice. On to Germany's second tank, instead of Poland's whatever-it-was.

  • @Keith2732

    The book War Without Garlands recounts a story of a Panzer II forcing the crew of a T-34 to surrender. The 20mm shells hitting the turret sounded like a gong inside the T-34 and as the Panzer kept firing the T-34 crew couldn't stand the noise.

    • @Keith2732
      @Keith2732 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops. I'm rereading the book and it was actually a 20mm flak gun mounted on a half track. The story is in the section on the reduction of the Kiev kessel.

    Maybe I overheard it, but I didn't find it... what was maximal turret rotating speed in degrees per sec?

    • @thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368
      @thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No Idea. As far as I know, it had a manual turret traverse system, so I guess it was based on how fast the gunner could turn the traverse gear/mechanism.

    I bet the Panzer II fucked up infantry big time, even though it was a 20mm gun, I think back to Saving Private Ryan. That scene were a 20mm Gatling just completely fucks up those airborne troops on the tiger tank.

    At 21:45 you say the "Light" division was unique to the Polish campaign. But this isn't quite right. Rommel had a "Light" division in the AK. Also see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_German_divisions_in_World_War_II#Light_divisions.
    I see you've moved whatever device you are using as a teleprompter into the vicinity of the camera. It is a great improvement. But the reason for not using just voiceover eludes me.

    ahh more proof that the youtube algorithm is broken. How has a channel like this has been around for a year without ever making into my recommendations ( found this channel through other users) and only has 1.2k subs? I guess they just really want me to watch jimmy fallon and people making giant gummy worms.

    One has to wonder why they didn't put a 37mm gun in these tanks.

    • @BenignViewer
      @BenignViewer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      DIdn't fit in the turret. The whole turret and potentially chassis would have to be redesigned to fit a 37mm gun or bigger - which they did with the Marder II (and the Pz. III when they redesigned the whole thing)

    And for god sake... If you are making historical program, make an effort and check how to spell German words! "Luchs" is not American tank, but German.., soooo? It's "luhhHHHhhs", like Luke, but with clear "H". Damn it... "Lutches"?? :) I hope not to hear how you spell "Nashorn", "Stug" or "Stuh". ;)
