You have to hold the cursor over the red values on the left for a VERY long time for the pop-up to appear that explains the issues. Basically the popup includes a general description then shows the target value and you'll see the red value simply misses target. I had to contact their support about that back when I first started using Expose because it's very un-intuitive and I still hate that design choice. I don't know why they refuse to let you just click the red-value for the popup to appear or have the popup appear immediately without the delay. The presets mostly just adjust Peak and LUFS settings between different streaming channels. I use Expose all the time just to double-check that I'm not going to suffer from normalization and compression issues on different streaming platforms and that I didn't miss any phasing issues during mixing.
Loved your crossover on Jon Sine channel with the tape machine sound. Was so pleasantly surprised to see you pop up! More crossovers please! I think a lot of other youtubers are into your channel.
Does "crossovers" mean collaboration with other TH-camrs? If so I agree, but gotta remember that he Masters as a full time job, and he probably works on his own music too. And that in and of itself is a full time job (working on your own music)! And then TH-cam! Making these videos takes a long fucking time! For me, since I have no idea how you work video programs, it takes me about 3 months at 12hrs a day 7 days a week to make one of his videos! Now he'll get it done in prolly 8hrs or so, but still, even as a semi-pro videographer(sp?) it k take a long time (pro videographer is working on blockbuster movies like Avatar, Wonder Woman 1984, or the like, Tv shows, etc.). My point is he's got 3 l time jobs basically, which means his time is more valuable than money, or anything wise at this point, most likely.... As it sure was for me back when I was doing that(working 3 full time jobs)!
If you want to check out reference EQ, compression, polarity and volume levels (against say Billy Jean) whilst mastering then the plug-in to use (if you're using Master The Mix plug-ins) would be 'Reference'. I use Expose purely to check my that my exports meet those 8 parameters for the format my client is going to use (TH-cam, Soundcloud, CD) ... I also double check with that free on-line 'Loudness Penalty Meter' that you (WSS) covered a while back . There's also 'Levels' if you want a version of Expose that works as a monitoring plug-in, (with a few extra parameters and functionality). And yes ... I do like the suite of tools that M-T-M provide, once I realised what they are intended to do and how best to use them, (i.e. not in the mixing stage for me)
Emotion and immersion are what judges a mix. A computer will never do that - that is what makes us human and what makes MUSIC GOOD. The rest (EQ, loudness etc.) are just guidelines. If it makes you feel good, and captivates you - you're on the right track. Somethings are just basic boring but necessary adherences to standards (LUFS level etc).
I stumbled on this tool a few years ago, and for the price (next to nothing) it's absolutely GOLD. The only things you need to learn/know about it are a) what it can/can't indicate to you, b) how to adjust the thresholds you need it to indicate based upon, and c) how to see when those thresholds have been tripped. Great for avoiding disto that occurs when you encode a WAV which has TP hot spots to a compressed format.
I really like this plugin. I’ve been using it for a several years now when they first released it. FYI: You need to put your mouse over the number value for a few seconds in order for the info window to pop-up. Its great for showing you your average LUFS, ceiling peak, phasing issues and dynamic range but only with the chosen preset. You can also edit your own. Its certainly not the end-all but its still a great analytical tool for the price point. I wish you put in a bit more time with it. It does what it says on the tin.
The point is pro mastering engineers can clip and limit extremely hot and still sound great! Tip: right click on any TH-cam video and click Statistics for Nerds to check the loudness of your favorite videos.
I find this plugin pretty helpful. A shame you did not read the info before making this video (see link under the "?" mark in the upper right.). When you would have, you would know what each field means and your expert opinion on those would have been very interesting to us. (a short description is given when hovering over the value.) But it is true what you say about the creative and the technical side of things. When I tried I was amazed how many (classic) tracks go into red too so I was kind of hoping for your view on that in this video.
I've had this for a while, it's really cool, gives you a good idea where you are on loudness and dynamics, use it for a day or two and it all makes sense, especially when you compare with your reference tracks ;-) Good value!
@@D-One If your like me you want all the help you can get! I've got several meters, usually using Izotope Insight on the 2-Out, but Expose is cheap and does it's work well ;-)
It's really good but as you say some genres are not supposed to have a lot of dynamic range and that's artistic, not a fault like distortion. I use it to check the loudness and compare a bunch of tracks in the same window, it is very useful for that and great value
Wow. I bought this about a year ago. This is the first time I’m ahead of you. Not that it matters anything but I usually learn from you not yelling at the screen “don’t click just hover to see the tooltip” :D
What annoys me is that stuff like this forces a standardized sound, where if it doesn’t sound like that standard then it isn’t good. There’s a difference between a snare that has too much high end frequency that’s blaring your ears and a snare that sound too low “to be a snare”.
Plugin like this seems handy, but this afternoon I downloaded the TT Dynamic range meter to check some of my work against one of my favorite new cd purchases. I was creating an audio montage with Wavelab from some of my tracks and the wavefroms disturbed me a bit looking a the density of it. The meter confirms that the dynamic range of some tracks is a tad low but the avarage wasn’t far off from that cd that I bought.... The meter said a DR of 8 for all the tracks combined. One of the tracks was only DR 5😅. Looks like I have some work to do in improving it.
Expose is a godsend once you get familiar with it. Doesn't replace your ears, but it does give you an extra sense of security to confirm that your audio falls within desired parameters. Easy to define your own custom parameters as well.
Can you elaborate a bit on technical problems with a mix that you mention? I tried to search on the topic but the results were so broad. Maybe there are a few common issues you could give me some direction on to learn about? Thanks.
Yeah I think the operative-word in their description of the product is 'issues'. "Drop your audio file into EXPOSE, and see any issues in seconds". I don't see anything on their site that would lead me to believe that it's supposed to judge anything in the realms of 'taste'.
I just this just to preview different masters "in time", without having to open any daw, and also seeing the specs real quick - actually don't care about the presets or the "red"
SOS, Call Bruce Swedien and tell him and Quincy Jones to get together to redo the Billie Jean mix..A lot of music that is technically mixed produced well, doesn't mean that is what will move people.
I was like this the first time I used this plug in and left it alone for about a month. Then one day during some down time started to dick around with it and found that it really is a good tool. You do have to learn how to use it though. Now it's second nature and I just listen to the thing once and I can nail it very fast.
i feel like a jerk for saying this but this was a pretty lazy video. you didn't read any instructions on how to use it!! the tool tips didn't pop up so you gave up. you just clicked a bunch of things and made some quick surface level observations made from a place of mostly confusion and that was it. so the video isn't going to be useful for anyone considering buying it. it's your channel and you can do whatever you want, but, this wasn't a fair assessment. i love your channel immensely and of course you rarely disappoint me, i just had to give you a little criticism this time. peace!
no need for instructions on a simple plugin like this , his videos are about finding special plugings , once he dosent find it he dont go deep for it , so try it and instructions are availabe somewhere else thats why hes not doing it
I've made mixes that were 100% in the Blue for all 4 modules and the mix was STILL outta whack. I found this useless. Used it daily to the bone for 15days but would bot get it...
Hey hey! I recently picked up this plugin called Metrik AB from Plugin Alliance/ADPTR. Changed my way of mixing/producing completely. It has tons of metering displays including your favourite Christmas tree. Even though it’s upside down. But. The big part of it is not that straightforward. I found it very interesting because it’s reference plugin and you can match your meters to a great song and still sound like shit. So it’s actually make you think why this and that sound good based on what you hear rather than what you see. It’s not a new plugin but do you fancy reviewing it and your thoughts on the topic? Thanks.
Checked youtube today for anything interesting and then this happens! Timing is perfect! This thing though, aren't there better ways to analyze your audio? I would think so. :) Merry Christmas!
I checked Billie Jean on Ozone Tonal Balance and the result is way too little low mids and way too much high end. Izotope pretends to have a plugin for mastering and analyzing mixes in general, but the truth is that it's for modern edm only, I suppose

Do we need everything you run the sound through? We did not need all this in the 70's and 80's. The focus should be on the best possible sound quality! Much of today's mussik has poor sound quality! loudness war and dynamic compression ruin the sound! I do not think the sound quality of studio equipment needs to be any better than much else. if you have 10 sound modules, you run through 10 preamplifiers
