    Dr. Foust sounds exactly like Uncle Atom. I've learned so much from all your videos!

    Never say NEVER, or I could NEVER do a model paint-job that good when it comes to painting Miniatures. I have witnessed complete beginners, who had never painted before, finish up with some very rewarding paint jobs. When asked how they did so well, with only limited advice and help, the majority of the answers were, "I used my imagination". Or, I watched Fantasy Films, etc, and used that as my idea. Every painter uses their own techniques too, and every painter ends up learning better techniques as they progress. A very nice "How To" Video.

    If anyone finds this too complex for a beginner, look up the Warhammer painting for Beginners tutorials. They are probably the most thorough and understandable tutorials available.

    Quite possibly the best painting tutorials I've found on TH-cam! Just starting to play Warhammer and need to figure out how to use all this stuff I bought. Clear and simple explanations to cover a wide variety of basic scenarios, thanks much!

    really love hero forge. But could you do a video on how to treat your miniature before the painting? I heard every 3D-printing material can have a different way of reacting to paint but I have no experience at all

    • @annie1kenobe
      @annie1kenobe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had the same question. On the Hero Forge website, under materials, it says that the lower grade plastic (which is what I ordered) comes primered and ready to paint, but I didn't see information about any other materials.

    Can you please please please do a video on how to paint a triton (dnd race) I just bought a mini from you guys (Ralkar) and I need ideas on colors. And how to get better shades to bring on the skin features. I have zero artistic ability lol

    I just went through a few videos and these are so relaxing to watch. And interesting, of course. Anyway, as someone who is planning to start painting: would you by any chance consider selling these minis as a package (printed or STL download) so that those we could literally copy the video step by step on the same mini?

    Question about process: why do you add the shading wash AFTER the highlights? Does this dull the highlights down, or do you have to go back and retouch again? Curious why the process is from light to dark, instead of the other way around.

    Fantastic job as always Dr. Faust! My only qualm is that you should've painted half of the shield the turquoise color :)

      I'm pretty sure he mentioned it, but I watched this a while back. Poster Tack/Removable Adhesive Tack. I found an Elmer's brand at Michael's.

    What do you use to adhere the base of the miniature to the bottle top, that allows for easy removal once the figure is painted?

    Hey! So I'm going to be painting my first mini. It's the generic plastic. So the lighter grey one. Most of my mini is going to be dark silver armor anyways. Would you say that I should still prime it black to start it?

    Is it better to do dry brushing first then followed by washes or in a diffferent order? i was thinking the wash would cover up some of the dry brushing no?

    Great intro to painting video. Are you going to be using Dr Faust for all your videos or are you going to be using other painters. Using other painters would give the viewers greater exposure to a wide range to techniques.

    Good painter, but not a good tutorial. These techniques may seem like "basic painting" to an master painter, but throwing 3 dozen different colors on screen, using jargon like glazes and mediums without expanding, are not basic. That's misleading and likely very intimidating to someone who just got their Heroforge in the mail and has never painted a mini before. What about cleaning, priming, and base coat? If you're assuming a certain level of knowledge/experience from your viewers, you should say so from the start.

      I'm watching this in exactly that position. Same reaction. I learned some things, but wish it started way more basic. ELI5.

      I wanted to write a comment just like this. Dr Faust is an amazing painter, but his tutorial videos are not for the (absolute) beginner.

      100% this. In the same position as the other people who replied to this comment, have never painted a mini before but just got my first one in the mail as a birthday present. ELI5 for real!

      @SinOfAugust 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is part of a rampant problem with almost every painter I’ve seen on the tube. And it’s a bit of a trap for new painters. There are truly amazing painters to be found here, but they do not think about what they are doing, and who the audience is. Often times they do “tutorials” but what they attempt to teach is overly complicated display level models(to be clear: this is NOT a display level model, but the general principle of applies here as well to some degree). Something that 99% of their viewers have no use for. Most people who watch them want minis they can use, not minis that are intended to be locked in a glass case.
      Minis that are painted to be used have certain features that are unique to them - much higher contrast to read well from afar, streamlined techniques that are realistic to apply to 50+ models and so on... Novices trying to learn way too advanced techniques, instead learn only that they suck at painting, and not the correct lesson that the person they are listening to is simply not a good teacher.

      @@GrayEmbry If you want truly basic, check out that guy on Black Magic Craft . he did do a very, very basic tutorial, just like you asked for. Now, I'm way beyond that need, but I found it very informative as it was.
      Agreed though - Dr Faust is good, but the tutorials are not for people beginning from 0.

  • @helios5752

    Hero Forge I love your mini's but you are terrible at making tutorials. This is episode 1 of your painting guide, you shouldn't be hitting painting techniques like dry brushing and ink washes you should be doing things like explaining how to prep a mini for painting, what primers to use or when to skip primers, what colors make good base coats and what colors to avoid and the reason for both, and how to take care of your brushes so you don't ruin them. I could see this as episode 3 where episode 1 is all about what to do to prep, what paint to buy (acrylic, enamel, oil, ect...), and how to maintain your equipment and you could possibly do a beginners guide where you teach a bit about color theory as episode two maybe even start painting a figure where you just paint without using any special techniques to demonstrate how to create certain looks like wood vs leather and then on that same figure for episode 3 (this episode) do your dry brushing and ink washes to show how it transforms how a figure painted with just base coats and go into depth with it because even in this tutorial which is supposed to be about dry brushing and ink washes you really only showed them being done and gave the concept behind them but you didn't explain properly how to do them for beginners.
    When I am dry brushing how can I tell when I have removed enough of the paint? Do I use watered down paint for dry brushing? How much force should I apply to the brush when dry brushing? This video is almost 23 mins long you could have done an in depth guide on these two techniques with that amount of time but instead you only really dedicated 10 mins to it and glossed over it like a calc teacher glossing over algebraic concepts during class because the students are suppose to have that down pack already by the time they get there.

      I was surprized that Ep. 1 made zero mention of Primer, etc. But, after watching this video, I'm thinking it looks like the video is more aimed at painters that already know the basic steps of getting your figures ready to paint with primer, etc. So, this video begins with diving straight into full-on painting.
