    Finally, an instructional video that actually explains how to thin paints, how to manage paint loading on your brush, essential items needed (a piece of tile for a palette, paper towels for unloading brushes, separate water for metallics), and other details that someone doing this for the first time would find beneficial. Thank you.

    Layering is a technique I've been working on recently, and this video has helped me understand the process tremendously. Thanks!

    Love the new series. Yours was one of the first channels I started watching when I got back into the hobby. You mention one of the most important things I have learned about painting, experimentation. As someone who started painting back in the 80's took a long break and got back into the hobby about 6 years ago experimentation really makes you better. I know it sounds weird or cliche', but, facts are facts. Being brave, going out on a limb, probably failing, but, learning from it, causes more growth than years of doing the same old thing. Thank you!

    Thanks for sharing your techniques. I'm just getting back into painting miniatures after about a 25 year break. I only previously used one base coat, a darker wash for shadows, and a dry brush for highlights. Looking forward to "stepping up my game" with the multiple wash method!

    one of the best videos on layering for beginners!

    I got a steel mini because I wanted it to have more weight to it like metal dice. I can see that you have a nylon model, which is twice the size. Any advice on painting this little itty-bitty boyo? Are there easier ways to paint smaller minis like mine?

    Great video! I think that how much to thin my paint may be why my layering doesn't turn out right. Also, I know that this is only episode 2, but I hope that you do a video on Object Source Lighting, sometime. I just tried it out on a mini and I failed miserably. Some good instruction might just show me what I did wrong and how to do it properly. :)

    Actually, I'd really appreciate it if a future video showed how to correct mistakes. After so much painstaking layering work on the robe, what happens if your hand slips while painting the hand or a belt or something and you get "outside the lines"? I'd love to see you scotch a big brown bit of paint on the robe and show us how to fix it without a complete redo!

      @ThePaintingClinic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you are fast you can grab a clean wet brush and lightly scrub it away. Otherwise the only fix is repainting the area.

    Will you add more base races for your minis in the future?

  • @bigplap
    @bigplap 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does layering require plenty of different paints or could I try to mix white or other colors with the base to create the same lighter details seen here?
    (wanna try painting as I've never done it before but I don't want to buy multiple paints if not needed.)

    • @Haunted_Gallows
      @Haunted_Gallows 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do that, but not all colors will lighten the way you want with black/white. For example, red mixed with white makes pink, and its better to mix with yellow for a "light red", orangy color.
      Honestly, the more paints you have, the larger your spectrum will be. But it isn't a requirement either.

    What paints do you use?

  • @dcgullatte
    @dcgullatte 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if I’m getting ready to paint my first ever mini, should I skip this and just focus on washing/dry brushing for shading and highlighting?

    • @ThePaintingClinic
      @ThePaintingClinic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd suggest starting with is part because layering is more universal. You can use thicker paint and/or less layers to begin with.

  • @LauraDelvecchio

    Now when you say thin the paints do you mean to add water or to add paint thinner?

    hello, I'm new to figure painting btw these videos will help a lot once I get my figures :) but my question is how did you stick the figure to the top on the lid???

    • @timberry4709
      @timberry4709 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally people use what is called "blu tack" putty, available from various manufacturers. It is a blue, reusable, putty-like substance also referred to as "poster putty".

    Dr. Foust I love your videos and just found Hero Forge. Was the miniature you painted the premium plastic or just the plastic version?

    • @spaps7920
      @spaps7920 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Mould it was regular plastic, the premium plastic is a darker color

      Each paint used is written down and can be seen in the top left corner. "VMC" stands for "Vallejo Model Color", whereas "VGC" stands for "Vallejo Game Color".

    I've never thinned my paints.. ever >_> ... because i thought the citadel paints were ready to use out of the box... I had no idea... now i still have no idea how to thin my paints.

      There are plenty of resources available on how to thin paint. Either use water or another kind of filler and experiment, he briefly described suggested ratios but there is really no substitute for experimention. I am very much learning myself. Heh
