Creating a Multilingual Library is probably in the project of many schools that have students growing up in a wide variety of cultures. But there are many challenges! (financial, finding the books our students will enjoy), making sure they are appropriate, etc.
Hannah King will be sharing solutions and talk about the impact it has.
WHO IS HANNAH KING:
Hannah King is a Senior Lecturer in English Language at London Metropolitan University and a PhD Candidate in Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck, University of London. She holds an MA in Cross-Cultural Communication and Applied Linguistics from Newcastle University and a BA in French and Spanish Languages and Literature from Western Washington University (USA). As a sociolinguist, her main research interests include interactional and discursive identities, transnational language practices, and multilingualism.
A lifelong booklover and language enthusiast, Hannah has recently begun to combine her passion for reading with research on multilingualism. This began with a 2022-2023 British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) funded project with Gonzalo Pérez Andrade and Soofia Amin entitled Promoting multilingualism at school: How researcher and practitioner collaboration can support and inform the educator-student-community triad. Through the development of this project that explored how languages are made visible, represented, and valued in a linguistically and culturally diverse primary school, Hannah led in the creation of a multilingual library of picture books that has since grown (thanks to additional funding in 2023-2024 from London Metropolitan University) to 261 books in more than 62 languages.
