The Biff. Chip and Kipper books. We went through all of them and it was really a very daunting reading experience for my children! They all loved reading but these books were a "must" at school and they so didn't like them. I am totally with you : they should change the curriculum. Choose other books, more compelling for our children. It seemed to me to get back in time when we read them...
I like the example with "two" which indicates a very interesting part of English etymology. The fact that we don't pronounce the /w/ in "two" anymore has to do with the labialization of the vowel by the /w/: /twɑː/, /twɔː/, /twoː/, /twuː/, and finally /tuː/.
Thank you, Weronika, for emphasising that one doesn't need to buy resources to teach language (before reading: for that we need printed texts, of course). The world around us provides us with all elements we need to teach words, sounds etc.

The discussion around language acquisition is very close to my heart since I'm raising a child in culture/country (the US) that mostly only uses one language. Anecdotally speaking, kids seem to acquire languages most easily when they play with other kids that speak that language they are trying to acquire. I remember I learnt Gujarati simply playing with the kids on the street when I was growing up in India -- I don't ever remember trying to consciously learn Gujarati. Another example: a French mom said her son learnt English mainly after school (this is a trilingual school that has instruction in French, Spanish and English) when he was playing with other kids that spoke English. Thoughts? Stories help, I'm sure, but physically playing with other kids provides so much more context than listening to stories.
@bealion Yes, I have also observed that with my sons and Japanese. They have picked up a lot from their cousin. And this cousin has picked up a lot of French from my sons 😁 What is motivating is the fun aspect and the need to communicate. But when this is not possible, Dr Mason's use of stories does provide the benefit of making the learning process stressfree and engaging.
There is something beautiful about putting pen/pencil to paper, isn't there? I remember as a kid there were times when I really enjoyed writing and writing beautifully. Unfortunately, as the years have gone on, my use of the computer has gone up and my use of a pens/pencils has gone down, and my handwriting has suffered as a result. On the topic of cursive writing, I get the impression that American schools don't emphasize that in the early years. My child started writing in cursive via her online French school in first grade, but her physical American school was very much in non-cursive mode. Also, is it helpful to teach a child to write with both hands? I did this in the early days with my child, although I admit I have not kept up with it.
@bealion Here, in England as well, children don't learn to write in cursive. My son asked me to teach them after seeing cursive for the first time in "Babar" (It's a French book for children). Now, whenever they want to write nicely, for example to write letters to their grandparents, they use cursive 😊

This books sounds lovely. This is actually how real people talk when they speak multiple languages. I grew up in India and people mix Hindi and English all the time! But, this is my first time hearing of a book written this way.
@bealion Yes indeed, there are not many books that do that in a natural way. There are some, like the "one third story" books that start in one language, gradually mixes another one, and ends in that latter language. My book "In Search of the Lost Words" also mixes 2 languages.
Although I appreciate the sentiment behind the program, it feels a bit like checking a box versus really embracing multilingualism. I say that because it seems this appreciation of languages happens one week a year, is that right?
@bealion Yes indeed, it happens only 1 week during the year. But I understand that this is a start. The positive reactions should help teachers see and understand how powerful it is to value everyone's languages and cultures. When a school doesn't see the point of celebrating their students' languages, it's a great first step. Hopefully it will motivate them to do more 🤞
Thank you for your question! While schools typically celebrate one week a year, our association carries out training and outreach throughout the school year. One aspect we've been working to better integrate into the French school system is the practice of translanguaging. We've also created a multilingual glossary for educators, and we're currently working on a similar project for local crèches. We are all researchers dedicated to plurilingualism, but it takes a lot of momentum to make changes in the French school system, due to a lot of historical and social factors. It’s great to see more books with multilingual and multicultural characters, but I completely agree that we still need more diverse representation. I love that Kelir Books is taking action to change this! The emphasis on transmitting culture and language to our students/kids is so important. Can’t wait to check out all the books!

@maryamjoob I am glad Sarah's story also touched you! I was also inspired by her work. I am saddened when I sometimes hear parents leaving on the side their languages because it is "not an important language" or "no one else speaks the language". This is why I wanted Sarah to share her passion and journey. Can I ask what is your native language?
@library4multilinguals258 I have two native languages. I have Pulaar on my mother's side and Wolof on my father's side. Wolof is also the most widely spoken language in my country, Senegal. I couldn't agree with you more. Sarah's story really touched me. I'm currently writing poems in Wolof and hope to improve my writing in Pulaar soon. Her story inspires me to delve deeper into my native languages and cultures. Thank you @library4multilinguals258 for offering us this wonderful way to get closer to our languages.

Loved this session! Dr. Annie Chang Ng shared some awesome insights about the science of writing. It’s super helpful to get into the nitty-gritty, especially for those of us working with biliteracy and multilingual kids. @annieng3979 Yes, the more initiatives there are everywhere the more normalised it will be 🤩
Unfortunately most multilinguals are not aware that they are... Especially in many monolingual settings, people tend to minimize their language skills. The mindset about languages is always determined by the context we are exposed to. I am multilingual and very aware of it since very young age, but what shocked me most was to hear my children's teachers consider them as "less useful" in class, due to the fact that they were receiving EAL support. It was an English school in NL. This (and many other reasons) made me start helping multilingual families and educators here in NL and Belgium so far, understand how to best support multilingual children at home and outside of home. I wonder how many teachers in the UK have been trained to work in multilingual classrooms? There are many ways to get trained even online about this (TEFL for example...).
@UtesInternationalLounge Yes, it is an issue that is still very present in England as well, and although the name EAL is still the most used, more and more teachers are using the term Multilingual Learner which already changes the perspective on it. In England, Multilingualism is not part of the training, but it should definitely be!!! I see however CPDs popping up. But there is a long way to go.

I understand that you wrote a book in English and different kinds of French: that is encouraging for speakers of various ways to use these languages. Abiut what you say about your children being more confident in speaking the home language also outside of home, it might also have to do with the fact that English is considered a prestigious language in France. If you would speak a less prestigious language this could be different, right? I am now curious to read your book. Et j’aimerais savoir si cous envisagez des versions bilingues avec autres langues? Par example italien et allemand?
Hi Ute! Yes, this book is great to give bilingual children an understanding of the fact that being bilingual does not necessarily mean speaking "perfectly" in both languages (with all the question marks that can surround this word, "perfectly") Off camera, Aimee was also telling me that she knows how privileged she/her children were due to the fact that English is a "prestigious" language, and that it was easy for her to find books for them. Hopefully, viewers will also understand that Aimee and her husband put effort into finding the books their children enjoyed and reading them to and with them.
Yes, my children definitely benefited from English being a prestigious language in France, and I know that children who speak *other* languages at home do not get the same kind of positive feedback about their home language(s), so that was a real advantage for us. I *have* started working on an English-Spanish book similar to this one, but it requires working with a Spanish speaker in the U.S., because I am not at all competent to deal with the linguistic or cultural side there. But I think there is a lot of potential, because there are so many Spanish-speaking kids of different backgrounds in the U.S.! And, like with this book, the characters we have been (slowly) developing are also from different backgrounds, with different linguistic experiences.

The framing of learning multiple languages as being a time issue over a cognitive one was interesting. As for comments from teachers discouraging use of a minority language with the child, I’m very lucky that the nursery school my child goes to in Japan is very open to the fact that we speak mostly English at home and encourage English use. I will say though that I still hear anecdotes about such comments from those around me, so I think we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to attitudes toward learning other languages.
Oh!! That's great you have a supportive nursery! Our sons also go to a school that is supportive. But unfortunately, not all schools are. So it is important to get educated so that if a professional gives us unreliable advice, we know how to react.
