I'd bet it's a really nice piece of Camphor, the heartwood is a deep reddish-brown, relatively easy to work with, and is great for furniture. Fun fact: The refined crystalline chemical found in camphor trees, named after the tree itself, is a natural insect repellent that's been used for hundreds of years.
I’ld like to know the answer to your question myself. My guess is it’s Chinese rosewood, but it’s very rare and expensive. I think he would need a special licence to use it for what are essentially demonstration pieces. His skill certainly does justice to a beautiful wood 😊👍
