  • Tips on removing old shifters and installing new Shimano Dura Ace shifters. Bar end shifters are mainly used on time trial or tri bikes, but are also used on the ends of drop bars as an alternative to STI shifters. There are even aftermarket clamps to use the shift lever portion on mountain bike bars as thumb shifters.

    Thanks! I bought a bike with a loose bar end shifter and needed to tighten it up. Glad I knew the threads were reserved so I could tighten it up.

      Great video - very helpful as it will help me with my planned move of the same bar end shifters from a swept back handlebar to drop bars.

    I've got a Triban RC100 with wrist shifters. It's a 1x7 so I only need one end.
    Recon this is safer to shift with if I slap it on the bar ends?

    Just recieved a pair of these today. Can I use them with a 10 speed deore ( long cage ) derailleur? If not I won't put it together untill I get another derailleur. Could you enlighten me on what will and won't work?! Thanks, your video is very clear, nice job.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it should work fine. Other than some of the newer shimano MTB stuff, all the 10 speed and below shifting uses the same pull ratio. As long as the shifter and cassette match indexed clicks to cassette cogs, it will work fine with a deore long cage derailleur.

    At 3:45 you said there's a stop there that the keyway will rest up against. Is that a stopper washer or part of the design?

    Are the shifter cable housings external to the bars or is there a groove they are running through the bar end mounts internally? I was just sitting here trying to figure out the best way to make my recumbent trike shifting more ergonomic if I put a 10 speed freewheel on it's hub motor and Microshift bar end shifters instead of a twist shifter mounted perpendicular under the twist throttle that is on the bar. If the cable housing is over the bar under the tape, that won't work as my throttle is in the way. If I can route the cable inside my bar past the throttle, I could clean up a lot of weirdeness (other than me riding a recumbent trike... :)

      The cable and housing coming off the shifter are external. Most bar extensions on TT or Tri bikes like the example in the video will start out external, then go inside the bar after 3-4".

    will the bar end shifters fit on the braze on of a downtube? They look similar.

    hello,how do you know, in general, if it's a left-hand thread? why is it used on these levers? thank you.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When installing these, yes, you're turning the bolt in a reverse left hand or counter clockwise direction. I believe the reason is because the threads are actually normal threads, but if you think about it in such a way where the portion of the body that the holds the shift lever is basically threaded normally like a nut. The part you are actually tightening is a hollow bolt with a flange on the far end and a 5mm hex opening to tighten on the other. If you visualize a normal bolt threading into a nut, normally you're on the other end, but in the case of these shifters, you're on the nut side, turning the bolt from the bottom, which would be reversed. Make sense?
      Thanks for the question!

    • @beneathpavement1
      @beneathpavement1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeyMesa No, doesn't make sense. Whethr you look from the point of view of the nut or the bolt, it screws right on a right hand thread. this is a left hand thread.

    Do the original gear shifters still work when you install these?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bar end shifters will basically be replacing whatever type shifter you had. If you have down tube shifters, these would just relocate them to the ends of drop bars. The ones in the video are in the extensions of a TT or tri bike. If you're thinking of having STI type shifters as well bar end shifters, I don't really know of a way to use both. You can do it with Di2 and eTap electronic shifters, but I'm not sure it can be done with mechanical shifters.
