This is a great video. I believe authoritarian origins go further back. The Egyptian rulers were authoritarian. I think it has more to do with human nature and the urge for the few to rule the many is engrained into our being. Parenting the population essentially. The height of hubris is thinking you know better than the next person.
This is a dilemma that many people have to recognize and accept in an authoritarian society. Hence many people would rather live on their knees as In the context of true freedom - carries heavy responsibilities and complete control, over the aspects of being fully independent. I can’t wait to learn more about the implications of both sides and how adaptation to the middle ground (grey area) could be achieved as a commoner. Thank you for your amazing lecture Mr David.
@HistoryfortheAges the episode starts with this grate alien being who solves all of mans problems all he wants in return is that you visit his home planet. Throughout the episode humans are trying to translate the book he carries early on they translate the title "to serve man" only once it was to late they learn "it's a cookbook"
Great video and interesting topic to consider. I believe all the points you made are valid. I especially connected with the idea of "bread and circus" because it makes so much sense on its own. I think its interesting to consider how basically any of our basic human needs can be "taken advantage of" and used as a means or even perhaps weaponised to make us willing to give up certain freedoms. Personally , I think, overall, the more "comfortable" life a group of people is accustomed to, the more likely they would be to surrender freedoms in exchange for maintaining that level of comfort, to the extent that it doesn't conflict with their morals, or what they can justify. That's just generally speaking obviously. I could also see it working in the other extreme -- a people group that is so utterly desperate to escape horrible living conditions that they'll accept whatever it takes. Definitely an interesting topic. I think I'll discuss it with my teens.
I would choose to be truly free…but only because I have elders and a family/ community who have taught me what it means to be actually free. My “natural self” wants ice cream all day and free WIFI! We only learn our identity in the context of our family and tribe/ community. The older ones show us how to sacrifice and how we can reap long term benefits from self-discipline… they also carry us when we fail to carry our own weight! Then over time, we become the ones who carry the weak/ little ones. Thank the Lord for family!
Is it better to live on your knees or die standing up? This is a very thought-provoking video. I am looking forward to reading your comments!
