Took me twice to spot the mustache and I yelped when I saw it even though I was watching for it! Too funny! Hearts and Harts is very pretty and I'm hoping to stitch the Yule Cat by Yule of 2025. I am such a slowpoke.
Yes, children in Iceland still put a shoe in the window from Dec 12th to receive small gifts and trinkets if they had behaved well the day before. Brilliant trick for parents to make sure the children were behaving well. In my family, each of my sisters had a special jólasvein and the night he came from the mountain, we would get something extra, mine was Gluggagægir - the Window Peeper. I did not always behave, but I did not get a potato 🥔- I would get a note explaining my transgressions 😂 Thank you for these interesting videos of the different traditions ❤
Last night I watched a Hallmark movie that took place in Iceland, and the Yule lads were depicted in the movie, so it was interesting to hear you talk about them in your video today.
In certain areas of Iceland there were Yule lasses, not just lads, but the popularity of Jóhannes úr Kötlum's poem has pretty much wiped them out. Grýla, their mother, is first mentioned in the 1200s in sagas and Snorri Sturlsson's prose Edda. In the Reykjavik area Grýla, her husband Leppalúði, the ladd, and their pet the Yule Cat are said to live in Mount Esja. Older friends have told me the threat of a rotten potato if one was naughty was sometimes carried out in their youth but I'm not sure anyone does it nowadays.
That is amazing! I did not know that - I looked up some info on the female Yule lasses and Dagrún Ósk Jónsdóttir, a folklorist at the University of Iceland said the following (in a Grapevine.is article): "Some female Yule Lads, like Flotsokka and Flotnös, would steal flot, the boiled down animal fat that was used for food or light, and which was quite valuable. Flotnös would put it up her very big nose and Flotsokka would steal unfinished knitted socks and fill them with the flot, ruining both.” - it's a really fascinating history I think! :)
I loved the mustache that appeared on your face! All of those creatures sound horrid! More important for children to behave! Thanks for the info and a chuckle. Again love the pattern and its character!
Jacob...love all the information you shared...your appearing and disappearing mustache was the need laugh to dispels the horrible creatures that came during the Christmas season...I am glad we have much nicer traditions in our world now...best wishes ❤
🤣 I was working on my Advent Countdown while listening to you and I glanced up just in time to see you with a moustache. 🤣Too funny. I did a double take. Love the names of those bad lads.
First off, the subtle shade in this video....A+ and second, your commentary on the yule lad names was hilarious. Thank goodness I didn't have a drink at hand, it would have been everywhere. 😅 Have a great day! ❄️
So intertaining! I had to watch three times to spot the mustache😅. I have a long list of flosstubers that I'm subscribed to, and all year long your channel hangs out in the bottom half of that list. Then cones December 1 st and I have great fun watching your face climb the list to the top! Like I said, very entertaining 😁❤️
Haha! Loved your mustache! You’re so good at these videos. I enjoyed learning about the Yule Lads. Love your Hart and Heart design! My fingers are walking over to your website now. 😊
Hi Jacob, I loved your video as always. Those stories were too much fun! I about died laughing when I saw that mustache on you! I had to rewind it and see if I was mistaken. But, no, you had a mustache for a few seconds. Lol. ❤
Hahaha thank you Susan! As I inserted the man's face in the video we were sort-of looking exactly alike minus the moustache. So I thought I should quickly grow one 😂
Hahaha they're so fun I think, it's fascinating how many of the old traditions that were quite terrifying turned into really sweet family celebrations :D
And we thought children were scared of Piet and the bundle of twigs in The Netherlands and Krampus in Germany...😲😂. Iceland has 12 mischievous lads...LOL Unusual traditions are so much fun.

We visited Iceland last summer and learned about the Yule Lads. My husband earned a new nickname - Bjor (Beer) Sipper.
This is so entertaining. The lad that sniffs by the door is my favorite 😂 hilarious ❤
Haha yes - so weird! Love them though :D
Fabulous video Jacob, I particularly liked the pause before “it’s just wrong” for the door sniffer. Thanks for the joy you bring.
Brom
Haha thank you Brom! :D
Delightful time hearing these traditions. Thank you, Jacob!
Thank you Linda!
Fun fun morning! Smile on my face as I start my day. I have a dog who could be considered a “door sniffer!”❤️🐶
Haha thank you Jeanne! The dog has a very good excuse being a door sniffer I think :D
Jacob you find the most wonderful stories....Yule Lads 🙂
Hehe thank you Judith! They're quite something aren't they!
Like the you told about the Yule Lads. I picked up a book on the Yule Lads when I was in Iceland, very comical drawings of them and fun reading.
Thank you Diane - they're brilliant! :)
So fascinating Jacob, Yule Lads ..certainly had me smiling & laughing at their names and what they did….Harts & Harts is beautiful ❣️❣️
Thank you so much! Love the Yule lads - they're so cool I think. And happy that you like the Harts & Hearts one! :)

So interesting and fun to learn about these customs. My grandchildren that live in Vienna love Krampus, which is terrifying to me. 😂
Oh Krampus is quite terrifying isn't he, and he's one of the last truly scary remnants in Europe I think! :)
Very interesting!
Thank you Sheila!
Hi Jacob
This is interesting - Thank You ❤️🤗
Thank you Linda!
Oh my, I hope the Yule lads stay in Iceland 😂🤣. Traditions are fascinating.

Geweldige video en ik hou van tradities.
Superleuk de quick second moustache! Maar doe het maar niet in het echt.🤭
Haha wie weet... misschien Victoriaanse bakkebaarden? 😂
