Just to explain why Sylas completely turned to ash, he is a vampire and in D&D vampires are hurt by sunlight. This is important because the spell that Keyleth used was essentially concentrated sunlight which harms everybody because it is so strong but would do more to sylas in this case. This is also why although Grog does get hurt by the beam not as badly as Sylas.

@@MeeshDeeReacts Yeah it is one of the small mechanics that make this show so cool as somebody who knows D&D and the original show.
For example another one of those small things is when Grog faces off against Sylas and Sylas tries to control Grog again Grog resists it because he leveled up between the sessions and his class gave him an ability that does not allow him to be charmed/mind controlled.

Sunbeam? Did the sun tree further enhanced the spell, or taught it to her? Or was that just added for the show?
For Meesh & Dee, from the DND community wiki:
      "6th-level evocation
      Casting Time: 1 action
      Range: Self (60-foot line)
      Components: V, S, M (a magnifying glass)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
A beam of brilliant light flashes out from your hand in a 5-foot-wide, 60-foot-line. Each creature in the line must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 6d8 radiant damage and is blinded until your next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded by this spell. Undead and oozes have disadvantage on this saving throw.
You can create a new line of radiance as your action on any turn until the spell ends.
For the duration, a mote of brilliant radiance shines in your hand. It sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. The light is sunlight."

@@Dark__Thoughts It is likely sunbeam, not 100% sure how much of the interaction with the Sun Tree there was in the original show. I watched that part a long time ago and know a bit more details about grog because I am more familiar with Barbarians.

    • @PristineTX
      @PristineTX หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@Dark__Thoughts Her interaction with the Sun Tree wasn’t part of her sunbeam spell on Silas in Critical Role. That was added for this animated adaptation for dramatic effect. She did talk with the Sun Tree quite a bit during the Critical Role, though it was usually with hilarious results, rather than dramatic ones.
In Critical Role, Keyleth actually used the sunbeam to destroy what was left of Silas - a black mist that was attempting to escape back to Silas’ coffin, where it could regenerate - rather than the way it is depicted here.

@@frenchtantan I need to check, but I do remember that he did roll really well but that is highly possible as Travis, especially with Grog as it was his first ever character in D&D, often would forget his own immunities and resistances until after Matt had described the events based on his rolls and sometimes Matt would retcon the events while other times he just waved it off with a “we’ll remember it for next time”
Update: you are right. From just looking at the original campaign transcript… (and I likely was conflating this moment with another where Travis did a shockingly great roll on a dump stat for Grog) he and Matt RPed the effects of him rolling a 4 only for Travis to then realise that he is immune due to raging and Matt walking it back as an almost success only for Grog to shake it off. Thank you for catching that.

When the series first aired (three episodes every Friday for a month) the Critical Role channel did a watch along each week. Matt (the dungeon master of the game) was crying watching the scene with Keyleth embracing her power and killing Sylas. It was the culmination of him and his friends who were just playing a game of DnD, which garnered a huge fanbase, now watching the animated version of the story they told together. And the actress that played Keyleth is his wife...so it was just emotions all around.

    • @geak78

It was also redemption of the hate Keyleth (and Marisha) received throughout C1. She's a strong woman but it can't be easy to see so many people treat your wife like that and then get back in front of the camera with a smile.

I honestly _prefer Legend Of Vox Machina_ Keyleth over Campaign 1 Keyleth if only because in Campaign 1 she came off as a bit too sanctimonious and a know-nothing-know-it-all, but I 💯% _agree_ that Marisha _didn’t deserve_ the online hate she got.

In regards to the "how did he do that" for Grog swinging. Travis (Grog's player) had Grog close his eyes during the combat. So every swing was "wild", which means he rolls at Disadvantage (you roll your attacks twice and take the lower number, thus much more difficult to hit). However, Sylas was unable to use his mind control on him. So it was a gamble that did actually pay off!

Honestly, D&D players sleep on druids. They're really freaking powerful, especially at later levels. Bards, too. Keyleth and Scanlan are incredibly potent in the game. Keyleth can both bring the pain magically AND tank with her expanding types of wildshapes. And Scanlan's near endless bag of Counterspells have saved their asses more times than I can count.

    • @Dark__Thoughts
      @Dark__Thoughts หลายเดือนก่อน +1

From what I heard, moon druids are kinda OP in 5th edition and also one of the best tanks due to their secondary health pool from shapeshifting. Never played pen & paper but I keep having a negative disposition towards druids, probably because in some of the computer RPGs (not strictly D&D) you typically very quickly meet some annoying druid circle that ALWAYS has some idiotic drama for you to deal with. Still can't help but love Keyleth though... Really hard not to.

Problem with druids is that they are really frail at the beginning and as they are probably the most versatile class it's difficult to learn and play them effectively. But yes, at higher levels they're OP (in whichever way you want them to be).

Fun fact about the music during Sylas' death. The battle theme you've been hearing all season (the bar fight in the first episode, occasional uses throughout the rest of the show, and most notably Keyleth killing Sylas here) is actually the theme that is used for Critical Role's 2nd Campaign, beginning about the halfway point. The song is "Your Turn to Roll" and is worth a listen to if you get a chance. I bring this up because there's a great bit of timing if you know the lyrics to the song and compare them to Sylas' death. If you sing along to the tune during the scene, Keyleth kills Sylas right as the line "Villains beware 'cause you're 'bout to be dead" plays.

Great reaction, my two favorite reactors! Man this episode is soooo action packed it is wild! I really liked your reactions! Just a clarification, when Scanlan was going to start his singing, Delilah cast silence on him (in DD to cast spells you need a combination of components, sometimes you combine speech, gesture and physical elements.) with that he wasn't able to do his Bardic inspiration which helps the group, nor cast spells. Later Scanlan returns the favor and casts silence on her ( he the shhh with his fingers mimicking what Delilah had done to him).

So fun fact, by now you've probably heard about the story of how this show came to be. Critical Role wanted to do a single 22 minute animated short set during one of the adventures they had during their private home game before they began streaming it as Critical Role, so they opened up the kickstarter that the fandom *immediately* blew up. Of the $750k asked for initially, that was beaten within the hour, over a million raised in the first day, and over $11 million raised by the end of the 45 day kickstarter. Amazon would later fund the rest of the season and pay for seasons 2 and 3 from there. The fans funded the first 10 episodes, this episode marks the first episode paid for by Amazon instead of the kickstarter.

Great video, as per usual, ladies! So there was a lot that was added to this scene in the show that I don't recall being present during the liveplay, but I'm so glad they did! The "Real men hug" line (inspired), Keyleth being mostly deadened (that was originally Vex - the anti Keyleth attitude of Vex is entirely new, so I see why Keyleth sacrifices herself in the show), and I don't remember Pike being involved in the fight that extensively (I think Ashley had to leave earlier, so her astral projection turned off right when they got to the ziggurat in game). Two things about this episode: First, in the live campaign Vexahlia was the one who dies in the chamber with Delilah. They changed it so another moment has a bigger impact,. And two, the reason Pike's astral projection failed at that moment was because Ashley Johnson's internet cut out during their game play so they wanted to utilize that in the animated series.

You called in the end with percy.. he has levels of warlock which is a class in dnd where your magic comes from a deal you make with a demon

He didnt take any actual levels in warlock - that would have meant missing out on the maximum potential of just being a pure gunslinger. He took the feat Magic Initiate which gives 2 cantrips and a 1st level spell from one class; so he acquired Friends, Minor Illusion and Hex from the warlock list. None of which have really come up in the show yet, Percy seems very mundane after this season ends....

@@hhylobates4098 I wonder if they're going to just let it go and not have Percy's residual demon damage be a thing or if they are waiting for a thematically appropriate moment to reveal it. They have definitely smoothed everything out and uncomplicated it, just due to the medium constraints, but I feel like that's a juicy enough thing that they might just be waiting to unleash it as a gut punch of "oh I'm not free after all, my soul is forever marked" type angst they haven't had the time to get to yet. Technically not that much in universe time has passed yet from the end of season 1 through to the end of season 2, it's been what, like a few weeks, a month at most? And the break between Briarwoods and the CC wasn't super long.

@@mayaenglish5424 I've been hoping that if his powers aren't around yet then they'll use the other perfect time for them to appear, after the events of Glintshore and his brush with the well of power that birthed Orthax....

      @@hhylobates4098 Yes, or Spoilers:
Whenever they go to Hell, the timeline is all scrambled but from the trailer I get the vibe we'll be headed to Hell first THEN Glintshore, so having the residual demon stuff come out around devils would be VERY fun. Maybe they can smell it on him. But either scenario would be great.

This episode is far and away my favorite episode of season 1 and it hints at what's to come in Season 2. I put season 2 of Vox Machina up there with season 3 of Legend of Korra and the latter half of season 2 of ATLA, it is just that good!
    Some random Dnd factoids:
The highest level spell this season is the Astral Projection the Everlight bestowed on Pike. The second highest level spell is the Finger of Death spell that Delilah struck Keyleth with (it's a pretty nasty spell that does a ton of necrotic damage).
Keyleth's moment to shine is due to two spells: Daylight (which she used to illuminate the ziggurat) followed by Sunbeam (which nuked Sylas).

React to Saint Seiya - Legend of Sanctuary, is a CGI animation based on the 80s manga/anime Saint Seiya, the movie was made in celebration of the 40th career of mangaka Masami Kurumada (creator of the manga)

After all this time that Vex has been berating Keyleth, been putting her down and trying to get Vax to dismiss romantic feelings for her, Keyleth still sacrificed herself to save Vex.

the animation does seem like a step up - they had originally crowd-funded 10 episodes, and then Amazon kicked in for 2 more and a second (and later third) season, and I think the budget went higher when they did
see you for the finale, and hopefully season 2 and 3!

It's been this way all the time, it was all fully funded before they started. They just really had a lot of that on display here
