  • Join me on an unforgettable journey through the enchanting windmills of Kinderdijk Holland, where history, culture, and natural beauty converge. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its iconic windmills, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant tulip fields. In this video, we'll delve into the rich history of Kinderdijk, explore its stunning scenery, and learn about the fascinating engineering behind these historic windmills.
    Why Kinderdijk in the Netherlands?
The Kinderdijk village is home to 19 well-preserved windmills dating back to the 18th century. These windmills were constructed to manage water levels in the low-lying region, a testament to Dutch ingenuity and resilience. Today, they stand as a symbol of the Netherlands' enduring battle with water and are a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, engineering, and scenic beauty.
What You'll See in This Video:
    00:01 Meet Kinderdijk
00:54 Scenic Boat Ride: We'll start our adventure with a peaceful boat ride along the canal, offering breathtaking views of the windmills and surrounding landscape. This is one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of Kinderdijk.
01:14 Windmill Demonstration: Witness a live demonstration of how the millers operated the windmills. Learn how they started and stopped the blades, aligned the sails with the wind, and attached cloth to the frame to catch the wind more effectively.
01:44 Living Quarters: Step inside the living quarters of a windmill and discover how millers and their families adapted to life within these rotating giants. These cozy, functional spaces offer a glimpse into the past and the daily lives of those who kept the windmills running.
02:19 Historic Fishing Boat: Along the canal, we'll explore an old fishing boat, a reminder of the traditional livelihoods that once thrived in this region. The canals were essential for transportation, fishing, and water management.
02:40 Biking Along the Canal: Experience the beauty of Kinderdijk by bike. The scenic paths along the canal provide a leisurely ride with picturesque views at every turn. It's a perfect way to immerse yourself in the serene landscape.
    Accessibility:
I visited Kinderdijk during a Viking River Cruise, which conveniently docks close to the village. However, Kinderdijk is easily accessible by public transportation from Rotterdam or Dordrecht. You can also drive or bike here, making it a convenient day trip from many parts of the Netherlands.
    About Kinderdijk's UNESCO Status:
Kinderdijk was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, recognizing its outstanding contribution to the history of water management and its exceptional cultural value. The windmills of Kinderdijk are a global treasure, offering insight into the innovative spirit and resilience of the Dutch people.

Looks gorgeous and calming, always wanted to go and see them, and the tulips! Also learn about wooden shoes as I have a fascination with them and them being from Holland. You should make these 20 to 30 minutes segments, they are so nice and you could fit more footage of your travels. I love your opening with, get off the road..ha, was that planned or did you ask a friend to yell that out? Love your ending catch phrase to.

It really is a fantastic area. I wish the tulips would have been in season when I was there. I was in Holland many years ago and went to a wooden shoe factory, it was very interesting. Wild that so many Dutch still wear these shoes around the house and in the garden. Thanks for watching another one of my videos, much appreciated. ;-) Cheers, Mike

    Are these tours expensive?

It's Europe, so probably. I would check out Viator to get an idea, it depends on the kind of tour, and, from where, i.e. a bike tour, car, group, private, etc. Thanks for watching. Hope my answer helped. Cheers, Mike
