I'm hoping that all this criticism towards Bethesda will make Fallout 5 the best game yet! Right now, I support Bethesda, but if they screw up with F5 I'm done with the franchise til some other company takes it over.
Better Microsoft than a publisher like EA or Activision. Microsoft has incentive to just let them make a great first party game to add value to their system/economy.
The main thing that Microsoft is pushing on these new devs (e.g. Ninja Theory, Inxile) is just to go nuts with the games that *they* want to create, not what focus groups want or what is the hottest trends.
Microsoft has every reason to let Obsidian make a good game, if they want to regain a competitive advantage over Sony in the next generations console war they must learn from their mistakes and introduce more and better exclusives to their catalogue. Sure they could profit from exploiting the consumer and Obsidian, but that would massively detract potential Xbox Series X customers.

Just because they don't have the NV writers doesn't mean they can't still make a great Fallout game. Obsidian games always have good writing. It's just how they do.

Actually, no. That was their first time doing so and ratings were not very good for new vegas, so they pulled away. What I'm hoping for sometime in the future is Microsoft hands Obsidian to Bethesda where Bethesda merges with Obsidian, creating a hybrid BGS that has people that understand what a good story is and people that focus more on gameplay, content, world building, and combat, all four of which new vegas fails at.

What like Microsoft is any better? Theyre still gonna force obsidian to cut corners on their games. Effectively destroying the reason why obsidian was such a good dev. Because either way now they have to adhere to the business practices of any large corporation. I understand why 2K people downvoted this.. But Microsoft now is, really, a completely different company than it was just 6-8 years ago. Just research what this company is doing for open-source and Linux communities. For me personally, they've made free full-featured Visual Studio Community edition (which I use every day) and Visual Studio Code - THE best code/text editor as of 2018. And it's also completely open-source and free. So maybe at least first few years of Obsidian working as part of Microsoft will end with some awesome products for us to enjoy. Time will tell.
Bethesda would not make pra have someone make a plataform exclusive Fallout and now that Microsoft bought obisidian they are as far as i can see never going to touch the Fallout IP ever again, It hurts me to state this
another ranger. I’m getting tired of seeing this. Most of the devs who worked on New Vegas are no longer working with Obsidian. Big note to the story writer Chris Avellone (think I spelt that right). So even if they where given permission for another Fallout it probably wouldn’t be as good as New Vegas. Most likely better than Fallout 4 though.
First, I would prefer a fully completed version of Knights of the Old Republic 2. With cut content and an ending that wasn't rushed. Or the promise it'll happen and I'll gladly wait.
@@Animated_Lunch I wasn't aware of this. I had thought Fable got the axe when Lionhead closed it's doors. If you're right this is....both exciting and scary. Recapture the magic of Fable/TLA and Fable II, or another Fable III and Fable: The Journey. A more RPG mechanic ridden Fable would be nice. It's always been more of an action adventure. Imagine a Fable with depth in dialogue and world building on par w/ something like Dragon Age: Origins. More choice and branching paths than previous Fables. Which, if we're being honest, didn't have much variety in outcome. And with a PROPER stealth system. Take the spellcrafting from the older ES titles and give it it's own edge. Like mix and watching Physical Shield and Enflame. So you'd burst fire everytime you were hit. Things like that.
Fable Legends, the 4 player Co-Op experiment with a fifth player as the bad guy was cancelled. I doubt a new Fable is coming down the pipelines since Lionhead Studios is no more.

I'm not so sure it isn't. A lot of developers have been bought by other companies, only to quickly go down the drain because of it. The question is if they can keep doing what they want to do, or if they are stuck doing what MS tells them to do. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I really don't think MS bought them just to be nice.
@@sandbakk77 well i havent done alot of research but they're not an EA or Activision at least. As for not being nice, thats true but it could be a calculated purchase. Alot of obsidian games have issues but with a bigger wallet behind them, when they did have a preset budget (dont quote me on that) like with fallout they delivered well. That being said everything at this point is speculation and im not smart enough or have enough knowledge on the situation. I can just wish them the best :) They are one of my three three trusted devs.
@@Purpleknicker True, it's all speculation right now. But one of the main reasons why Obsidian agreed to be bought is becaue Pillars 2 flopped big time. The game itself is awesome, but the sales very really bad. Why, then, would MS spend a lot of money to buy Obsidian, and then have them make Pillars 3? It wouldn't make any sense. You don't spend a lot of money to buy a company, have them make a sequel to a game that sold poorly, release it on less platforms, and still expect it to be a success. For that reason, I'd be very surprised if we ever see a Pillars 3 at all. It makes a lot more sense if MS bought them to revive an old franchise of their own, or perhaps start a new one.

The Majestic Parrot, I can see it now, Playground games for the incredible graphics and open landscape. And obsidian for their great storytelling and RPG elements. That’d be a game to look forward to.
As much as fable has faltered in the last few years (and discouraged people) I really do think Obsidian could rekindle the franchise and give us an experience similar to the first fable.

Obsidian is the only company that truly understands what a Role Playing Game is. adding stats and perks to a shooter doesn not make an rpg, an exciting and branching story with developed dialogue trees with fleshed-out characters does. Well, at least you guys don't partner with EA. I hope it all works out for you. Obsidian is the only company that hasn't disappointed me yet and who's games i'm always looking forward to
InXile does too. Both companies are made up of people from the OG fallout games. Both are also now under Microsoft which leads me to believe that a massive RPG is in the works (they said the teams are separate but my guess is that that will change).
@@im_a_random_guy3768 You can be a jerk to a couple people in ME 2, but the worst you can do is get everyone killed on the Suicide Mission. You can directly execute your allies and enemies in Alpha Protocol, and there's direct consequences to being a jerk to the guy by hitting him with the bottle on the next mission.
I don't think the bottle actually smashed, which is great because that's even more realistic. It's just like a heavy glass club, which I think is way more brutal and dangerous than some shattered glass over the skull.

Yeah, really love New Vegas, it has some flaws but as an oldschool fallout fan I just love how they managed to expand on mechanics from both Fallout 2 & 3.
Man KOTOR was just out of reach for me while I was a kid. Now I can afford it but it won't run on my computer. Like, it uses some type of engine that can't be run on most OS's these days.. If there is a way, I haven't found it yet.
@@LethalMaldo Microsoft was a big part of the Mass Effect 1, Jade Empire and Kotor Development, some of the best BioWare games. And guess what they where released only on Microsoft plataforms when they came out.
@@eMikerism also Lionhead wasn't a Microsoft decision. They went into layoffs because of their own money mismanaging and spending to much resources on games that weren't thought out. (Fable 3 & Fable Legends) Microsoft were very supportive the entire way. (Having enough confidence to put "fable" guy as one of their mascots and showing off the legends game on numerous occasions).
Bioware and Blizzard both said the same thing when they partnered with EA and Activision respectively, and look what's happened to them. I don't usually like being a negative nancy, but this worries me greatly. I'm happy that you guys have better security and more funding, but there's a precedent for this, and it doesn't paint a pretty picture. It might take years until you notice a change, but years from now you could walk into work and realize that you hardly recognize the place anymore. It's lost its identity. You're no longer the Obsidian we know and love. For all our sakes, I really hope I'm wrong. I suspect many people working at Obsidian have had similar worries, and that's why you haven't partnered with a publisher before. I guess if it was between this and shutting down, I'm happy you chose this. I just wish there was another way.
Bioware released ME2 and Dragon Age Origins under EA. A lot of people would argue those are their two best games. Blizzard put out Overwatch and Hearthstone too.
@@hihihi1q23 - Dragon Age Origins was in the works way before EA purchased Bioware, so they get no points for publishing that game. Actually they just fucked it up with taking content out of the game and selling it in pieces. Same happened with ME2 and its Cerberus market thing. I think this is the beginning of the end. No more Gog releases, maybe not even Steam, probably not. Xbox and Windows Store, yay!

Every bit of money I've ever spent on you games have been worth it down to the very last cent. Truly, never have I been dissatisfied with anything you have ever developed. Therefore I really really hope and pray that this deal with Microsoft will work out in your and us players favor. If you think this was the right move, I trust you. You've never let me down before, so I don't expect you to start now. I would much rather see you shut down your studio, and remember you as one of the best developers out there, than to see you sell your company to some "money hungry passion eater", that will twist and turn you into a money making machine with only passion for loot boxes, and then spit you out when they are done with you. @@l.d.jackson6755 well, that has a lot of answers. 1) he said that he played NV in a console, which means, without a single mod, a game which was designed for mods, so... 2) in other level, FO3, NV and 4 are the casualization of FO1 and 2, you know. 3) NV is basically a big Fallout 3 mod, the only 100% Obsidian's RPG are Pillars of Eternity or Neverwinter Nights 2, but he wan'ts NV... 4) Microsoft surely will aim to games playable on Xbox, so again console casualization was never good for any game.

@@Triggerhappy4480 Bethesda definitely isn't murdering the fallout series. 76 was to try bringing multiplayer to a single player experience and by what I've played so far I am greatly enjoying the story telling and environment. Feels like fallout to me. I've played fallout since black isle studios had it and when they sold the IP to Bethesda I thought it was ruined. 6 years later I finally buy fallout 3 GOTY for 20$ from my local Walmart for my PC. I played at least 6000 hours on that game alone and new Vegas even more since the new California mod was released. Then when fallout 4 switched up the formula again I felt refreshed with a whole new system to get used to. Crafting, settlements, etc. I could go on. It was invigorating for me and the series to make changes that were scary. 76 is another example of this and it pulls off multiplayer fallout near perfectly, combine that with free bug patches, updates, dlc and new content for Years to come, and tackling the wasteland with my friends in an all new way is awesome to me and allows me to further explore since it is just not me walking around getting lore. Bethesda is definitely moving towards a greater and more refined fallout universe. Don't let change scare you into thinking this IP is going to die. Its the best IP in my opinion, and is made by the people who enjoy fallout as much as we do. Thanks Todd for 76.

In terms of story, yeah, but gameplay? God no! Obsidian games in terms of gameplay seem to be stuck in the past. Take new vegas, they could have done something to make it better gameplay wise, maybe shields, more content, animations, but nope, they got money hungry for cash and that causes new vegas to just be fallout 3: desert simulator, which is boring as hell!

Probably yes and no. Yes, they might be, but no, I don't think they are allowed to make whatever game they want. So no AAA Pillars 3 from them. I could have hoped for a Fable 4 from them, but sadly, we know a new Fable has been in development for some time by Playground Games. That has me a bit worried. I'm sure they are fine developers, but they are best known for the Forza series. A RPG from them... dunno it's hardly their speciality. Though technically, we know a new Fable is in development, but they haven't said it's Fable 4. So it *could* be something else, so Obsidian can make the proper Fable 4. In theory.
Yeah, EA and Microsoft are so EVIL... They are businesses and more so corporations which their soul goal is to maximize profits. They observe trends in gaming and use that data to try and make more money. Really if you don't like the direction of gaming blame gamers for being dumb and spending money on these practices you do not agree with. If these thing's didn't make money we would see them go away. But Bethesda is owned by ZeniMax which is not a corporation so luckily they are able to have a different path.
Im hesitantly happy for Obsidian, one of the best game developers out there, but I hope they're careful not to give Microsoft too much say in how things are done. I don't want another Rare ware fiasco
Jordan Mck every company that Microsoft has bought has basically said that Microsoft is writing them blank checks and saying go make the best game you can make haha gearing up for the new gen. Rare was different though cause when Microsoft bought them all there major designers left the company and no one wanted them.
Microsoft is trying to setup their exclusives. Pretty much all the old good ip's suck now. It's the main reason why people like me prefer the Ps4 now, It has amazing exclusives.
I hope Obsidian can make a Fallout look-a-like game in the future, New Vegas was my most favorite game and I'm sad that this great company doesn't have the opportunity to make another due to bad relationship with Bethesda who screwed over this company.
Yeah, I'd love to see obsidian make their own post-apocalyptic rpg game that's on par with fallout 1, 2, and new vegas and hopefully has more time to develop then they did with Bethesda.
That Bethesda royalty story has kind of been debunked. When Josh Sawyer was asked about this, he said the royalty wasn't part of the original contract and that it was only added mid-development. In other words, Obsidian knew their contract was screwing them over but they nevertheless made a passion project. I can't blame Bethesda for getting a good steal. The lawsuit over the Fallout IP however, was them screwing someone over.
@Not Todd Howard I'm pretty sure Bethesda will take the petty route and blame the gaming community for ruining the Fallout franchise and shelf it for a decade and keep releasing Skyrim for their upcoming smart toaster.
So interesting fact...Microsoft owns the rights to Shadowrun for video games. Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun Chronicles were made under a license from Microsoft. So I'm hoping this means we get a serious AAA-level Shadowrun roleplaying game with the length and depth that Obsidian brought to games like Pillars of Eternity and Fallout: New Vegas. I'm not exactly holding my breath, but I can dream can't I?
I'd say chances are better than you think. When cyberpunk 2077 comes out, all the big publishers are going to want in on the cyberpunk rpg bandwagon. Square will dust off Deus Ex, EA will get bioware or DICE to do a Syndicate reboot. Activision will make Call of Duty: Cyber Warfare. And microsoft will probably have had a shadownrun game in the making for awhile.

A leaked report I’m seeing from July says that it’s sold over 200k, with numerous explanations as to why that’s not the final number whatsoever. (Remember it’s coming out for the Switch too) I enjoyed both of them and I gladly paid the 75+ dollars for the Obsidian Edition of the game
@@icurnvs776 It didn't sell well. Considering that the sequel also needed extra funding instead of being able to use revenue from the first (which says a bit about that). It seemed to mean Obisidan is surviving crowdfunding game to crowdfunding game, that's not a great place to stay in for stability.
Obsidian has a special charm that you dont find in any other company, you dont see it in Bethesda, or EA, or Ubisoft, it's something called love and you can only find that love in one of Obsidian's games
While I totally agree with you with about the clear love and passion emitting from the people at obsidian, the companies you listed are publishers, while obsidian are developers. Publishers are almost solely huge corporations, what inevitably comes with soullessness and greed. But there are a lot of developers, game studios in which their team is very passionate and loving, just like obsidian
Obsidian is now part of Microsoft. I highly doubt that Bethesda would let Microsoft/Obsidian make another fallout game when it would only be releasable for PC/Xbox.
The original team isn't even all with Obsidian anymore, if they somehow through some totally unpredictable twist of fate got the rights for another Fallout game, it wouldn't be what you hoped for, it'd probably be one of the biggest letdowns in gaming history in all honesty.
First Kojima Productions getting crazy support from Sony and now Obsidian getting similar from Microsoft is amazing. These smaller game studios are so important for the health of the industry.
On one hand, I'm glad your jobs are more stable, but... big publishers, man... big AAA publishers sooner or later dip their fingers into your business :/ I don't want your products affected by some meddling big wigs who will say no to this or that game, because the genre's not 'popular enough with mainstream audience', or force you to cut content, design around micro-transactions and mobile business models... alphashard the Xbox really isn’t about money though cause the Xbox loses Microsoft money. It’s just that Microsoft is such a big and successful company it hardly makes a dent.
Time will tell, I'm cautiously optimistic though as I really want more RPGs with depth and as good as Cyberpunk may be it sucked knowing that it might be the only big budget title in the genre for a while. Now with this happening that may no longer be the case.

"They (Microsoft) don't want to buy a company and ruin it..." It's a shame that they've already done just that with Rare. They took existing franchises (Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker, etc.) and essentially ruined them in a single game.
Rare was already garbage. They only had a leg to stand on due to Nintendo betraying Sony and going for European developers/hardware, which resulted in those kinds of games. Rare did not have much going for them to be honest.
Rare was doomed anyways. 3d platformers weren't gonna be popular forever, especially on xbox. Rare should've stuck with nintendo, because that's the only way they would've stayed afloat

Obsidian would be bankrupt right now without MS from what I know. They have been given a chance. If they dont get money, they'll be cut. In the words of someone else. "The game was rigged from the start"
The fan are just nervous because we i think obsidian i think pc.(with some ports). And Microsoft hasn’t had the best track record lately since they feel pressured to get exclusives for the box. Aka state of decay 2, sea of thieves, you can argue halo (disappointing). Gears of war kinda bland in the new generation. Scale-bound RIP. Crackdown 3 were is it. Recore no one cared. So personally im not mad at obsidian just worried Microsoft could easily fuck up there game creation. But if all goes well and there not forced exclusives , im happy Microsoft picked them up. Would’ve preferred Zenimaxx to just take fallout form the abusive step parent Bethesda.
Peyton Bayne the head of Microsoft caused that. They kept cutting money from game development. Phil finally got him to see the light. All the companies will be just fine and will be able to make awesome games at least till Phil leaves lol.
We all know how this industry works, likely hood is within 5 years obsidian probably won't exist as a studio anymore lol. If their first game doesn't reach sales expectations they'll probably get another shot but if the next doesn't... They'll either be sold, or if no one wants them... Disbanded. That's the industry
Well I don't think there will be a Fallout by Obsidian again because Microsoft would use the studio to make Xbox exclusive games (as they should) and Bethesda won't allow a game to be made for just one platform (2 at most) from their IP. But hey, at least we can hope to see a new Fable, Dungeon Siege or even Halo. Best of luck in the future, I'm sure Obsidian still has a lot of good stuff planned.
Let's be honest there was almost no chance that Bethesda gave another Fallout game to Obisidian and the fact that Bethesda choosed to release Fallout 76 instead of a tradionnal RPG shows that at least for now, want the exclusivity of the Fallout license. It's a shame but back in 2015 when I saw Fallout 4 ignored the existence of Fallout New Vegas by having 0 features of New Vegas or easter eggs I was already dubious about a new Obsidian Fallout game.

I mean, the amount of money they must spend on securing exclusives could be much better spent on r&d.
Can't believe that MS got both Obsidian AND InXile entertainment on board now, two classic rpg focused pc developers. I am happy that you all will have a nice budget and won't have to be worried about securing each new project or risking closure. Can't wait to see what you all do for your next big game.
@To Release is To Resolve No it isn't, you have to understand that Obsidian was literally this close to shutting down not too long ago and POE2 did not sell that well at all (recent investor reports put it at around 110k units sold). As far as it being the death of classic rpgs, we still have Larian for those, and I HIGHLY doubt that obsidian and inXile are both going to stop making their bread and butter games. They'll likely have a decent budget that they can try to tackle more 3d style rpgs a la KOTOR2/New Vegas or such again.

On top of that gamepass is coming to pc too (where you pay a monthly fee and get access to all the games included in it to play). I'm happy for them because if you read up on them you would have known that obsidian was literally a razor's edge from being closed down not too long ago, on top of that the recent sales of POE2 were a bit disappointing, so I am happy that they are now safe and don't have to worry about making it from one game to another if they are going to be able to afford to stay afloat. I do hope they get to (creatively) stretch their wings, get larger budgets then normal and the time to make their games.
When KOTOR I & II movies are inevitably made, after Disney burns out on post episode 6 "content," I hope you guys get a slice of the pie because you made a truly amazing Star Wars story.
Kotor 1 was not Obsidian though, and Kotor 2 story could have been okay, but not for Star Wars. Kreias nonsensical garbage alone ruinef that game more than the technical issues ...

Well, it's not so much directed towards Obsidian, but more-so Microsoft. It'd be a REAL shame if we see a repeat of what happened to Rare. edit: Also a lot of people don't like exclusives (and in the case of PC, don't like going through yet another store that isn't Steam).
You REALLY don't understand? Then let me explain why people are worried in literally one word. Bioware. More specifically, what happen to them AFTER EA acquired them. People rightfully fear that Obsidian might lose it's identityafter Microsoft bought them but it doesn't end here. We might start seeing more triple A, heavily consolized shooters with light role playing mechanics and microtransactions instead of traditional deep and complex RPGs Obsidian was known for.
It is not "Hate" that people feel, it is worry. We as a community are worried that in losing another independent studio we are losing studios that can create new IPs with great creativity. We are worried about only getting mass produce console ports for PC without any depth. We are worried that consoles will only get short boring games that are a repeat of what came out yesterday over and over. Large gaming companies usually do not want to take the necessary risk in creating new things as they are a bottom line what worked before thing. All we have to do is look at what has happened when studios get purchased that track record has not been good. That means we as gamers lose. WE lose. I hope this does not happen to Obsidian, but if we look at what has happened before the outcome does not bode well for us the consumer.
@@trainershade1937 It should be noted that a lot of the damage that was caused to the Xbox games division was due to the many blunders caused by Don Mattrick. Once Phil Spencer took over his role, he has made A LOT of good decisions which has caused the division to get back on track. I have nothing but full confidence in the direction the Xbox division is going now thanks to Phil Spencer.

Actually, no. That was their first time doing so and ratings were not very good for new vegas, so they pulled away. What I'm hoping for sometime in the future is Microsoft hands Obsidian to Bethesda where Bethesda merges with Obsidian, creating a hybrid BGS that has people that understand what a good story is and people that focus more on gameplay, content, world building, and combat, all four of which new vegas fails at.

I understand why 2K people downvoted this.. But Microsoft now is, really, a completely different company than it was just 6-8 years ago. Just research what this company is doing for open-source and Linux communities. For me personally, they've made free full-featured Visual Studio Community edition (which I use every day) and Visual Studio Code - THE best code/text editor as of 2018. And it's also completely open-source and free. So maybe at least first few years of Obsidian working as part of Microsoft will end with some awesome products for us to enjoy. Time will tell.

@@Animated_Lunch I wasn't aware of this. I had thought Fable got the axe when Lionhead closed it's doors. If you're right this is....both exciting and scary. Recapture the magic of Fable/TLA and Fable II, or another Fable III and Fable: The Journey.
A more RPG mechanic ridden Fable would be nice. It's always been more of an action adventure. Imagine a Fable with depth in dialogue and world building on par w/ something like Dragon Age: Origins. More choice and branching paths than previous Fables. Which, if we're being honest, didn't have much variety in outcome. And with a PROPER stealth system.
Take the spellcrafting from the older ES titles and give it it's own edge. Like mix and watching Physical Shield and Enflame. So you'd burst fire everytime you were hit. Things like that.
Fable Legends, the 4 player Co-Op experiment with a fifth player as the bad guy was cancelled. I doubt a new Fable is coming down the pipelines since Lionhead Studios is no more.

I'm not so sure it isn't. A lot of developers have been bought by other companies, only to quickly go down the drain because of it. The question is if they can keep doing what they want to do, or if they are stuck doing what MS tells them to do. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I really don't think MS bought them just to be nice.

@@sandbakk77 well i havent done alot of research but they're not an EA or Activision at least. As for not being nice, thats true but it could be a calculated purchase. Alot of obsidian games have issues but with a bigger wallet behind them, when they did have a preset budget (dont quote me on that) like with fallout they delivered well.
That being said everything at this point is speculation and im not smart enough or have enough knowledge on the situation. I can just wish them the best :) They are one of my three three trusted devs.
@@Purpleknicker True, it's all speculation right now. But one of the main reasons why Obsidian agreed to be bought is becaue Pillars 2 flopped big time. The game itself is awesome, but the sales very really bad. Why, then, would MS spend a lot of money to buy Obsidian, and then have them make Pillars 3? It wouldn't make any sense. You don't spend a lot of money to buy a company, have them make a sequel to a game that sold poorly, release it on less platforms, and still expect it to be a success. For that reason, I'd be very surprised if we ever see a Pillars 3 at all. It makes a lot more sense if MS bought them to revive an old franchise of their own, or perhaps start a new one.

Or they could start a brand new IP!, like from soft did with sony (bloodbourne) . Regardless i wish them all the best, hopefully they could give us a sneak peak as to what they have planned for the future (game wise) :>

Obsidian is the only company that truly understands what a Role Playing Game is. adding stats and perks to a shooter doesn not make an rpg, an exciting and branching story with developed dialogue trees with fleshed-out characters does.

InXile does too. Both companies are made up of people from the OG fallout games. Both are also now under Microsoft which leads me to believe that a massive RPG is in the works (they said the teams are separate but my guess is that that will change).

You can directly execute your allies and enemies in Alpha Protocol, and there's direct consequences to being a jerk to the guy by hitting him with the bottle on the next mission.
I don't think the bottle actually smashed, which is great because that's even more realistic. It's just like a heavy glass club, which I think is way more brutal and dangerous than some shattered glass over the skull.

Man KOTOR was just out of reach for me while I was a kid. Now I can afford it but it won't run on my computer. Like, it uses some type of engine that can't be run on most OS's these days.. If there is a way, I haven't found it yet.

Bioware and Blizzard both said the same thing when they partnered with EA and Activision respectively, and look what's happened to them.
I don't usually like being a negative nancy, but this worries me greatly. I'm happy that you guys have better security and more funding, but there's a precedent for this, and it doesn't paint a pretty picture. It might take years until you notice a change, but years from now you could walk into work and realize that you hardly recognize the place anymore. It's lost its identity. You're no longer the Obsidian we know and love. For all our sakes, I really hope I'm wrong.
I suspect many people working at Obsidian have had similar worries, and that's why you haven't partnered with a publisher before. I guess if it was between this and shutting down, I'm happy you chose this. I just wish there was another way.
Bioware released ME2 and Dragon Age Origins under EA. A lot of people would argue those are their two best games. Blizzard put out Overwatch and Hearthstone too.

Actually they just fucked it up with taking content out of the game and selling it in pieces. Same happened with ME2 and its Cerberus market thing. I think this is the beginning of the end. No more Gog releases, maybe not even Steam, probably not. Xbox and Windows Store, yay!

Every bit of money I've ever spent on you games have been worth it down to the very last cent. Truly, never have I been dissatisfied with anything you have ever developed.
Therefore I really really hope and pray that this deal with Microsoft will work out in your and us players favor. If you think this was the right move, I trust you. You've never let me down before, so I don't expect you to start now.
I would much rather see you shut down your studio, and remember you as one of the best developers out there, than to see you sell your company to some "money hungry passion eater", that will twist and turn you into a money making machine with only passion for loot boxes, and then spit you out when they are done with you. @@Triggerhappy4480 Bethesda definitely isn't murdering the fallout series. 76 was to try bringing multiplayer to a single player experience and by what I've played so far I am greatly enjoying the story telling and environment. Feels like fallout to me. I've played fallout since black isle studios had it and when they sold the IP to Bethesda I thought it was ruined. 6 years later I finally buy fallout 3 GOTY for 20$ from my local Walmart for my PC. I played at least 6000 hours on that game alone and new Vegas even more since the new California mod was released. Then when fallout 4 switched up the formula again I felt refreshed with a whole new system to get used to. Crafting, settlements, etc. I could go on. It was invigorating for me and the series to make changes that were scary. 76 is another example of this and it pulls off multiplayer fallout near perfectly, combine that with free bug patches, updates, dlc and new content for Years to come, and tackling the wasteland with my friends in an all new way is awesome to me and allows me to further explore since it is just not me walking around getting lore. Bethesda is definitely moving towards a greater and more refined fallout universe. Don't let change scare you into thinking this IP is going to die. Its the best IP in my opinion, and is made by the people who enjoy fallout as much as we do. Thanks Todd for 76.

Take new vegas, they could have done something to make it better gameplay wise, maybe shields, more content, animations, but nope, they got money hungry for cash and that causes new vegas to just be fallout 3: desert simulator, which is boring as hell!

I could have hoped for a Fable 4 from them, but sadly, we know a new Fable has been in development for some time by Playground Games. That has me a bit worried. I'm sure they are fine developers, but they are best known for the Forza series. A RPG from them... dunno it's hardly their speciality. Though technically, we know a new Fable is in development, but they haven't said it's Fable 4. So it *could* be something else, so Obsidian can make the proper Fable 4. In theory.

Yeah, EA and Microsoft are so EVIL... They are businesses and more so corporations which their soul goal is to maximize profits. They observe trends in gaming and use that data to try and make more money. Really if you don't like the direction of gaming blame gamers for being dumb and spending money on these practices you do not agree with. If these thing's didn't make money we would see them go away. But Bethesda is owned by ZeniMax which is not a corporation so luckily they are able to have a different path.

Rare was different though cause when Microsoft bought them all there major designers left the company and no one wanted them.

That Bethesda royalty story has kind of been debunked. When Josh Sawyer was asked about this, he said the royalty wasn't part of the original contract and that it was only added mid-development. In other words, Obsidian knew their contract was screwing them over but they nevertheless made a passion project. I can't blame Bethesda for getting a good steal. The lawsuit over the Fallout IP however, was them screwing someone over.

So interesting fact...Microsoft owns the rights to Shadowrun for video games. Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun Chronicles were made under a license from Microsoft. So I'm hoping this means we get a serious AAA-level Shadowrun roleplaying game with the length and depth that Obsidian brought to games like Pillars of Eternity and Fallout: New Vegas. I'm not exactly holding my breath, but I can dream can't I?

I'd say chances are better than you think. When cyberpunk 2077 comes out, all the big publishers are going to want in on the cyberpunk rpg bandwagon. Square will dust off Deus Ex, EA will get bioware or DICE to do a Syndicate reboot. Activision will make Call of Duty: Cyber Warfare.
And microsoft will probably have had a shadownrun game in the making for awhile.

A leaked report I’m seeing from July says that it’s sold over 200k, with numerous explanations as to why that’s not the final number whatsoever. (Remember it’s coming out for the Switch too) I enjoyed both of them and I gladly paid the 75+ dollars for the Obsidian Edition of the game

Obsidian has a special charm that you dont find in any other company, you dont see it in Bethesda, or EA, or Ubisoft, it's something called love and you can only find that love in one of Obsidian's games

Obsidian is now part of Microsoft. I highly doubt that Bethesda would let Microsoft/Obsidian make another fallout game when it would only be releasable for PC/Xbox.

The original team isn't even all with Obsidian anymore, if they somehow through some totally unpredictable twist of fate got the rights for another Fallout game, it wouldn't be what you hoped for, it'd probably be one of the biggest letdowns in gaming history in all honesty.
Bethesda would never licence a game to a competitor (Microsoft). So no, it will not happen.
First Kojima Productions getting crazy support from Sony and now Obsidian getting similar from Microsoft is amazing. These smaller game studios are so important for the health of the industry.

On one hand, I'm glad your jobs are more stable, but... big publishers, man... big AAA publishers sooner or later dip their fingers into your business :/ I don't want your products affected by some meddling big wigs who will say no to this or that game, because the genre's not 'popular enough with mainstream audience', or force you to cut content, design around micro-transactions and mobile business models... Man, it's like inevitable thing, it's like one of those scenarios always comes to bite you in the ass :/

Time will tell, I'm cautiously optimistic though as I really want more RPGs with depth and as good as Cyberpunk may be it sucked knowing that it might be the only big budget title in the genre for a while. Now with this happening that may no longer be the case.

It's a shame that they've already done just that with Rare. They took existing franchises (Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker, etc.) and essentially ruined them in a single game.

Rare was already garbage. They only had a leg to stand on due to Nintendo betraying Sony and going for European developers/hardware, which resulted in those kinds of games. Rare did not have much going for them to be honest.
Rare was doomed anyways. 3d platformers weren't gonna be popular forever, especially on xbox. Rare should've stuck with nintendo, because that's the only way they would've stayed afloat

Aka state of decay 2, sea of thieves, you can argue halo (disappointing). Gears of war kinda bland in the new generation. Scale-bound RIP. Crackdown 3 were is it. Recore no one cared. So personally im not mad at obsidian just worried Microsoft could easily fuck up there game creation. But if all goes well and there not forced exclusives , im happy Microsoft picked them up. Would’ve preferred Zenimaxx to just take fallout form the abusive step parent Bethesda.

We all know how this industry works, likely hood is within 5 years obsidian probably won't exist as a studio anymore lol. If their first game doesn't reach sales expectations they'll probably get another shot but if the next doesn't... They'll either be sold, or if no one wants them... Disbanded. That's the industry
Well I don't think there will be a Fallout by Obsidian again because Microsoft would use the studio to make Xbox exclusive games (as they should) and Bethesda won't allow a game to be made for just one platform (2 at most) from their IP. But hey, at least we can hope to see a new Fable, Dungeon Siege or even Halo. Best of luck in the future, I'm sure Obsidian still has a lot of good stuff planned.

Let's be honest there was almost no chance that Bethesda gave another Fallout game to Obisidian and the fact that Bethesda choosed to release Fallout 76 instead of a tradionnal RPG shows that at least for now, want the exclusivity of the Fallout license.
It's a shame but back in 2015 when I saw Fallout 4 ignored the existence of Fallout New Vegas by having 0 features of New Vegas or easter eggs I was already dubious about a new Obsidian Fallout game.

@To Release is To Resolve No it isn't, you have to understand that Obsidian was literally this close to shutting down not too long ago and POE2 did not sell that well at all (recent investor reports put it at around 110k units sold).
As far as it being the death of classic rpgs, we still have Larian for those, and I HIGHLY doubt that obsidian and inXile are both going to stop making their bread and butter games.
They'll likely have a decent budget that they can try to tackle more 3d style rpgs a la KOTOR2/New Vegas or such again.

On top of that gamepass is coming to pc too (where you pay a monthly fee and get access to all the games included in it to play).
I'm happy for them because if you read up on them you would have known that obsidian was literally a razor's edge from being closed down not too long ago, on top of that the recent sales of POE2 were a bit disappointing, so I am happy that they are now safe and don't have to worry about making it from one game to another if they are going to be able to afford to stay afloat.
I do hope they get to (creatively) stretch their wings, get larger budgets then normal and the time to make their games.
When KOTOR I & II movies are inevitably made, after Disney burns out on post episode 6 "content," I hope you guys get a slice of the pie because you made a truly amazing Star Wars story.

You REALLY don't understand? Then let me explain why people are worried in literally one word. Bioware. More specifically, what happen to them AFTER EA acquired them. People rightfully fear that Obsidian might lose it's identityafter Microsoft bought them but it doesn't end here. We might start seeing more triple A, heavily consolized shooters with light role playing mechanics and microtransactions instead of traditional deep and complex RPGs Obsidian was known for.
It is not "Hate" that people feel, it is worry. We as a community are worried that in losing another independent studio we are losing studios that can create new IPs with great creativity. We are worried about only getting mass produce console ports for PC without any depth. We are worried that consoles will only get short boring games that are a repeat of what came out yesterday over and over. Large gaming companies usually do not want to take the necessary risk in creating new things as they are a bottom line what worked before thing. All we have to do is look at what has happened when studios get purchased that track record has not been good. That means we as gamers lose. WE lose. I hope this does not happen to Obsidian, but if we look at what has happened before the outcome does not bode well for us the consumer.
@@trainershade1937 It should be noted that a lot of the damage that was caused to the Xbox games division was due to the many blunders caused by Don Mattrick. Once Phil Spencer took over his role, he has made A LOT of good decisions which has caused the division to get back on track. I have nothing but full confidence in the direction the Xbox division is going now thanks to Phil Spencer.
