      Own a 5-inch Mk45 lightweight gun for home defense, since that's what the United States Navy intended. Four Somalian Pirates break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my NWU Type 1 uniform and Phalanx CIWS. Blow a few hundred soccer ball sized holes through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my MK45 on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and it nails a Yemani fishing trawler. I have to resort to the Tomahawk missile mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with cluster munitions, "Tally ho lads" the cluster munitions shred two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. I arm the Trident ICBM MIRV missile and fire at the last terrified rapscallion. His skin begins to slough off his body as he waits for the coast guard to arrive since acute radiation poisoning is impossible to treat. Just as the United States Navy intended.

      Not even close! The previous generation Mk 42 gun was far superior. It was double cradled giving it almost twice the fire rate, and it was manned in the turret which allowed for quicker repairs. The 45 was designed solely for manpower and wait reduction. Performance was secondary to those two requirements.

    • @comander7681
      @comander7681 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesdemarco7161 this gun is manned not in the turret but there's around three gms under the gun for repairs and whatnot. Also the 42 didn't have nearly the firecontrol behind it that this gun does. You put the 42 on the same ship as this gun and have them fight it out to the death I'll take the 45 with the 160 firecontrol any day.

    • @jamesdemarco7161
      @jamesdemarco7161 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@comander7681 I understand there are GMs underneath. There is plenty to go wrong in the mount itself, and when time is critical, it is far better to have the mount manned. Also, we are talking about the gun itself, not the full gun system. They could have easily matched the old gun to the 86 gun system and had a far superior weapon with twice the fire rate.
      On a side note, I was an FC on USS Coyningham (DDG-17). It had the Mk 68 Mod 19 fire control system. With the Mod 19, the old Mk 47 synchro/servo analog computer was replaced with an AN/YUK-20 digital computer. To take a phrase from the movie My Cousin Vinnie, it was "dead on balls accurate".
