  • Iconic music venues The Bendigo Hotel and The Old Bar are closing their doors after nurturing Australia's up-and-coming artists for nearly two decades due to surging costs.
So, how do we save Australia's live music industry?

Big venues effectively 'funding' small venues will see those large corporations such as Live Nation, TEG etc who have large involvement in the large stadium-type arenas, start to exert more control over the smaller venues if it isn't done properly. We need a thriving independent venue scene to encourage up-and-coming artists also. Let's not sell out completely.

Like in America how Live Nation & co started taking a giant bite out of artist merch sales.

I can see Live Nation etc buying up a number of smaller venues as a propaganda move to 'save live music'. Sure it wouldn't be directly profitable for them, but the PR boost would be useful in other ways.

Insurers only making $16,000,000,000 profit this year as opposed to $18,000,000.000 per year.
That’s really tough times for the insurers.
Better use it as an excuse to charge more.

I walked down smith and Brunswick st last night and was shocked by the amount of bars and restaurants that have closed recently, even liquor taxes are need to be looked at as I don’t know how many ppl can afford paying $17 for a pint these days.

Add to that: bands are getting paid the same as they were in the year 2000. Decades of everything going up and yet bands still routinely have to split $50 for days or weeks of work.
Also: The female hosts are clearly only going to wine bars and the like if they only hear DJs. They aren't seeking out live music.

B: If they did I hope we would refuse entry. (Im a gatekeeper and I dont care, I gatekeep to protect our tribe)

Need to have sensible public liability insurance such as a disclaimer for people doing self harm, like they have at motor racing events. Insurance companies have become so expensive anyway they look for any excuse not to pay, remember read the fine print.

This is what happens in an overly regulated industry. Once again the smallhat insurancers and the government force a local cultural hub to close due to ever increasing costs.

The last Bendigo Show was a sad time but an amazing evening. Sad to see it go. But I’m grateful for the last drinks. I do hop the big money venues can chip in.
