    Nice, I think you should draw a Csehbánya Formation creature sometime. They are all unique and obscure. Ajkaceratops is the only European Ceratopsian, Hungarosaurus is an Ankylosaurid that has longer front limbs than back limbs, Pannoniasaurus is literally a freshwater Mosasaur, and if that's not awesome, then i don't know what is.

      @@ichthyovenator3351 For me the intrigue comes from how they're somewhat familiar in living lions, though there's so much unknown about their appearance and behavior. I would suggest the therocephalian, Euchambersia. (My personal favorite therocephalian.)
    But it’s hard to do research about it when every damn article is just talking about its f%€king venom.
    Or weather it was venomous, or evidence suggesting it was venomous. “Look at this horrific prehistoric monster that was venomous!”, “early venomous creature was most likely related to you!”, “... venomous!”, “venomous...”, “VENOMOUS!!” AHHHHH I just want to research more about Euchambersias paleobiology, or paleoecology dammit! Is all that research really tossed aside for its damn venom? It screws me off as you can tell.

  • @catpoke9557

    Interestingly, it is actually believed that saber tooth cats with teeth and chins of this size would have totally obscured teeth. It's generally assumed that if the tooth doesn't exceed the chin in length, or at least not by much, the soft tissues would cover the tooth tips. Which sounds counterintuitive, since most cats don't have a large bottom lip, but ones with large fangs actually usually do have a larger bottom lip to accommodate it. The clouded leopard is an especially good example. Its tooth length, relative to its body size, is VERY similar to a lot of saber tooth cats. Unlike house cats, you will never see its teeth unless it opens its mouth, because it has a very well developed bottom lip to wrap around the tooth.
    I think it's generally believed that cats with large teeth tend to evolve to wrap their lip around the tooth, because it would be hard to fit the muscles of their lips squeezed next to the tooth like it is with most cats. The tooth is so big it would pack the muscle against the bone, which might hurt.
    Of course some cats had teeth so long they couldn't reasonably fit it within a lip, so there are exceptions.

      Good to know, my mammalian knowledge is pretty appalling so this was quite informative and makes quite a bit of sense. Have their been any studies on things like enamel layers and wear on sabre teeth like seen with the daspletosaurus tooth in Cullen et al 2023? Cause I feel this type of thing doesn’t get touched on enough.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ichthyovenator3351 From what I can find, there's a few studies on tooth wear (mainly in smilodon) to figure out the diet, and surprisingly even social behaviors, of these animals. I cannot find any comparing enamel between different species to see the differences in teeth exposed to elements versus hidden away, though. I would like to see a study that compares cats we expect to have exposed teeth- such as smilodon- to cats we'd expect to have hidden teeth, such as homotherium.
      Heck, we could even compare smilodon's teeth to clouded leopards, since we KNOW their teeth are obscured for sure. They'd be a great reference point to see the differences.
      I think studying the enamel further would definitely be very helpful. Mammals use it in really interesting ways, sometimes, to shape the tooth. Such as how the back of a rodent's tooth is made of dentin- which is why it's white in the back- while the front is covered in enamel. Very porous enamel, which makes their teeth orange at the front. The dentin is softer so it gets worn down faster, causing the tooth to sharpen naturally as the enamel remains strong.
      Studying the enamel of saber cats expected to have exposed teeth, versus expected (or known, if it's not a saber cat at all and instead a clouded leopard) to have obscured teeth, could probably teach us a lot about how enamel presents and functions when exposed to the elements. And in that case, it can help us with other animals too, like dinosaurs, gorgonopsids, and other animals often depicted with exposed teeth. Finally, paleoartists wouldn't have to guess as much as they do currently, so long as they have access to enamel studies on the species they're drawing!
