I have to struggle sometimes to even come up with some sympathy for people who go hiking WAY out there, say in Glacier Nat'l Park where we KNOW grizzlies rule--not even bear spray, and DEFINITELY no firearm. That's not being "in harmony" with nature; news flash, bears do not feel kindly and protective toward YOU, they want to kill and eat you, and if you don't have an effective means of defense, they will.
Bear normally run when they smell or see people, if you suprise them they will kill you. You act like they see humans as prey, even when bears do kill humans often times they do not eat them.
My favorite channel on YT that displays this very thing is "Latest Sightings". No mercy whatsoever offered in the wild via animals. Thank the Lord I am a human. God bless.

The most proven handgun in dealing with bears actually happens to be the 9mm! There is a famous grizzly guide of like 40 years who has done numerous interviews on this topic. When non residents come to hunt bears in their camp the first thing he does is take them to shoot the pistol they brought. They all pull out cannons with the rationale that bigger is better. Then he gets them to try and hit a target from about 10 yards. Very few people hit the target more than once. Then he hands them his 9mm and says try again. And obviously they hit the target no problem. After 40 years around grizzlies and surviving many attacks, he wisely said, "shots on target are far more important than the size of the bullet." Especially when you're crapping your pants with a large grizzly charging you.

No just the absolute idiots who would walk in tall grass, knowing full well there are alot of bears around. Why did they need to be there in the first place? There is a reason for bear spray, so the bears in their own homes do not get shot, by people who should damn well know better than to be there.
BOTH. Especially when traveling in pairs. Bear spray does WORK and no matter how much training in the heat of the moment fools routinely bumble with their firearm and shoot themselves and/or each other. Btw, sad that the bear had to be killed but since it was in the act of assaulting a human, isn't the survivor entitled to some trophy(s)? A bear claw necklace earned in hand-to-paw combat doesn't seem like too big an ask.
If I had to guess at this point. I would say the father's well-placed shots did a lot more than the shots fired while under attack. I am not denigrating this man's courage or experience, just saying dad's a real one too.

I can only imagine what this feels like on top of shooting yourself in the process. Crazy! Hope your doing well from one hunter to another.
If I had to guess probably regular old rounds or fmj. I doubt hollow points would penetrate the bears fur and skin very well. I'd say most like fmj since the bear went down quick which means they got good penetration and the fact that most hunters use fully jacketed rounds.
@travwolfe101 Most hunters use soft tip depending on what they’re doing. In this case, there’s a good chance it was hard cast rounds though. Lot of people use them for bear defense because of the penetration you mentioned.
Probably hard cast lead since they had bears in mind. That would also match with the very mild wound on his leg since a hardcast round would go straight through. If it was hollow points or soft points it could have been a nastier wound.

Last year I became almost obsessed with bear attack stories and so I have listened to a lot but listening to you right after the event, and how you were prepared with appropriate weapons and a better quality trauma kit, plus your reactions has been very helpful in understanding the reality of such an event. You were so lucky that that bear did not rip off your face or scalp. You taught us how critical it is to hunt with a well-equipped partner. We love going out and being alone, but when there are powerful predators that can surprise you like you were surprised, well, I hope a lot of folks out here learn what made your situation survivable so thanks for sharing. Seeing the scenery behind, you was really important to because it looks like an area that a bear would not have surprised you like that, but it did. If you had to elevate your legs while you waited, I’d of propped them up on that bear and put it to work! It was a situation that you would not have expected that to happen. Thanks again!

Thank you! Same with fishermen we all get bullshit from the useless hippies who don't contribute shit to conservation and even litter their own trash whenever they kick it at the river.
Great speech dummy. They weren't there to preserve wildlife, they were there to kill wildlife and not for food. These are the kind of hunters that go out and kill for trophy instead of survival. That is no way preservation! I've hunted my entire life, for food only. Most hunters do absolutely nothing to preserve wildlife or the land. You're dumb or full of s g it

I have to struggle sometimes to even come up with some sympathy for people who go hiking WAY out there, say in Glacier Nat'l Park where we KNOW grizzlies rule--not even bear spray, and DEFINITELY no firearm. After 40 years around grizzlies and surviving many attacks, he wisely said, "shots on target are far more important than the size of the bullet."
Especially when you're crapping your pants with a large grizzly charging you.
Please do a follow up on your treatment. Also, how many shots did you get into the bear?

Bear spray does WORK and no matter how much training in the heat of the moment fools routinely bumble with their firearm and shoot themselves and/or each other. If I had to guess probably regular old rounds or fmj. I doubt hollow points would penetrate the bears fur and skin very well. I'd say most like fmj since the bear went down quick which means they got good penetration and the fact that most hunters use fully jacketed rounds.
@@travwolfe101not sure where you got this but… no. Most ammo for hunting is soft point.
