no matter how many times i watch this, my heart always sinks when i see stewart pass pre.
i don't - i ran for the same club as stewart in england! he was a hero to us!
Same
The running styles and the race action are brilliantly recreated by the actors in this movie. Love it.
Absolutely I do think they spliced in the actual race when they did the shots that were further away so the faces were not showing as distinctly but they definitely trained those runners to move like the actual guys.
I didn't know a movie like this existed. It's amusing to see a Hollywood adaption from one of greatest races in Olympic history. As a Finn I've always praised Lasse Viren for his performances, but Prefontaine fought till the bitter end like a soldier. I respect both runners enormously!
Actually, there are two movies.
I hope the rumors about his blood doping are untrue. If so he’s the greatest middle distance runner in Olympic history. It’s not even close.
But the race got delayed so LV had extra rest. But agree with the race was the best
Indeed he fought a FUTILE BATTLE..no one was going to beat the GOAT....no...one..but later his predecessor..EL..G
@@drbobperkins indeed..until EL G..came to the party 🎉
Does anyone else say "but it's given Pre his opening" to themselves while driving? No? Just me?
Awesome comment...I shall be stealing that from you.
i'm getting my license in 2 months that's my saying now
I am now
Prefontaine died in a car wreck. One I think he was responsible for. He drive recklessly. And he died from it.
And Sitting in traffic, I say, “It’s like the Duke of Plusatora (sp?) leading from behind.”
Steve Prefontaine, you are one of the Cross Running heroes for High Schools' kids. One kid admires you so munch that he draw a picture of you and hang it in his bedroom's entrance; What an everlasting inspiration you have.

Every time I watch this I hope Pre will win the race, even though I already know what's going to happen
+petethefreak40 You ain't kiddin brother
+petethefreak40 all that pussy wore him out.
e for effort
Pete every time I just hope for at least that Bronze
Pete: Be positive, ok. He could win!
I watched this video 5 times in a row and still the 5th time it gave me goosebumps
4:04 last mile, truly amazing
And it was Lasse Viren...
@@MrKLindholm Oh well
This movie always inspires me to go out and 🏃♀️ ❤️
He took them to the mountain top. I grew up admiring him in the 70s as a teen long distance runner.
This man has taken on mythical status in only 24 years of life..very few ever do that. A special talent who ended his life so tragically.
Giving as much pain as you can isn't enough.
And that's the cruelest lesson you'll ever learn.
"Pre's People" New Documentary on long distance running icon reveals his toughness from early age! Amazing!
the best inspirational race to me ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That Fart really ruined it for me.
thats what she said
Lmao I was caught off guard as well
Steve has inspired me so much. There will never be another person that has the swagger and mental toughness he has. He is just simply amazing. NO ONE will ever run like him. There won't EVER be another Steve Prefontaine EVER!!!!
3:08 his secret weapon!
He inspired me to start running again
"He ran his last mile in 4:04. What could he have done?"
Apart from run the first two miles in less than 8:30, not much.
@@gary1961 Or less than 8:08, right?
Viren's was 4:01...totally outclassed him.
is everyone just gonna ignore the fart at 3:08
lmao - is that in the actual movie? Or was it dubbed in this youtube video?
I LAUGHED SO HARD OMG I JUST SHAT ME PANTS
i was wondering like wth? lol was that really there then i went back and it was
Greg Sanchez No, I won't ignore it : one of the best ways to relieve bloating is by exercise and when Prefontaine farted right there it was a signal of how determined he was.
Greg Sanchez very loud!
Vi la pelicula y esta muy emotiva y motivadora! Me encanto, este tipo si que era un ganador.♡
Lo mismo digo
Y...me podrian decir porfavor como se llama la pelicula?
There are some uninformed comments here from people who seem to know a lot more about movies than they do about middle distance running. Prefontaine was a brave, naturally gifted athlete who lacked the tactical sense to win a championship race against world class opposition. People suggesting Prefontaine lost because he was a young athlete competing with others in their prime are wrong. Viren and Stewart were also in their early 20s and Gammoudi was a veteran in his mid-30s who was past his prime and never raced again after this event. Viren and Gammoudi had already run the 10,000m heats and final and still had the strength to win gold and silver here. Stewart ran an even worse tactical race than Prefontaine, and if he'd followed the leaders with a lap to go he would have challenged Viren for the gold medal instead of needing a late sprint to take bronze. The last mile of this final was quick not because Prefontaine went flat out to make it an epic race but because the first two miles were so slow that it could only get faster. If Prefontaine had made it a hard race from early on the way he often did against lesser opponents in collegiate events, he might have run the finish out of the fast men, but he didn't so we'll never know. What we do know is that Lasse Viren is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He won four Olympic gold medals and proved his talent, courage and mental strength in fast and slow races against the best competitors in the world. There's no evidence he ever broke the rules in any way, and the idiots here accusing him of doping don't know what they're talking about. Americans are right to mourn Prefontaine, it's tragic that he died so young, but when they romanticise his performances they shouldn't disrespect better athletes who beat him fair and square.
Well said Mr David Jones,
Viren went on to win a double gold again in Montrael. If Pre had been there he wouldn't have won again. Viren just had much better better finishing speed at the end. It was the time when they had to sprint in the last lap and Pre was never able to do that.
One of the hardest things to deal with is a slow pace. As a middle distance runner in high school and college, I had a set pace to run for a certain time. If the pace was too slow, the mental game becomes a major factor. I believe Pre had the same issues with this race. If the pace would have been a normal race pace, Pre may have won or done better. The mental game takes so much energy in trying to make big changes in what would have been minimal.
Leodragonfire thanks I didn't pick up on that the first time when the announcer in the movie was explaining it lol
Something else which should be noted was the relative distances run by each Athlete. Viren hugged the bends and never ran a metre farther than he needed to. It was calculated Prefontaine ran 40 metres further than Viren during the course of the race. BTW blood doping was not illegal then so that whole argument is irrelevant.
Smilodon Tiger So Pre was a dumb shit for running the extra distance?
Pre gives a new meaning to RIP at 3:08.
😂😂
Hank Schrader was a track coach before he became the FBI agent hell-bent on taking down Heisenberg?
lmao dude that had me rolling for a bit
he was also in hard to kill or another one of Segal's movie
You read my mind
He was in Starship Troopers too.
Pre was a front runner. Bowerman wanted him to run this race differently. That’s part of the reason he lost. The race he ran to qualify for the Olympics was ran faster than Viren’s time in this race. So he could’ve won
Coulda woulda shoulda but didn’t
GREAT POINT!!
@@Nuggetsin4 Oh yeah. Thanks.
I'm really excited to see the sequel when it comes out: "Postfontaine--The Revenge." This time, it's personal.
Lasse was so much better... Lasse
He was also freezing and re injecting highly oxygenated blood before races which is cheating. He was a great runner but I'm guessing your bias has blinded you of this.
I didn't realize this. Do you have a reference on this issue/fact? Thanks
lmao that title got to me
yup
Love that they used the original commentating
I like Viren's style to win the races - to keep his focus in winning - to make his tactics to be first in the goal - to be clever enough to follow and update his preplannings during the race - to be the clever man in the race:)

Awesome thanks for posting this ! ❤
If he saved that fart for the final lap he might have won.
Another totally disrespectful comment.
@@oldnatty61 god forbid someones makes a joke
Deranged-
Valid point, but it's Pre. A boyhood hero. Watching this brings tears to my eyes every time. Running, being a bad boy runner/outcast like pre w/ my shoes, shots, hair, and pierced ear, Neil Young and Patty Smiths music kept me from committing suicide in HS. I found a place to belong, escape to, and come to peace w/ stuff. So I'm a bit over sensitive. Thanks for the check.
@@oldnatty61 Smelling that rank toot is what makes my eyes water.
The great sports commentator David Coleman RIP.
And Norris McWhirter too. I think he stopped after the 72 Olympics.
I would like to think...that if he did in fact give his very best...he did win...perhaps not the race on the outside but from within...he gave his all.
but I agree.....
great song - incredible young man from oregon - go pre always !
ONE OF MY IDOLS
The look on his face when he farted on that dude was perfect. Had me rolling in bed laughing. Oh man that was great. Thanks for that.
The fart that saved a copyright strike
That was a great movie!
Track is one of the toughest sports, you run it alone. Pre was a God. Will always remember him. 💓
I used to run the 800 meters; I am in complete agreement with you--especially the distance races; other people don't exist when you are running.
This movie does a really good job at making the viewer think Pre is being held down on purpose by his opponents so it gives him such an underdog feel in this race, although in reality he just got boxed in for a bit longer in the race than he would have liked. Would have been cool to see a 1 v 1 race between him and the Finland guy
That FART WAS BOMB!!!!!!!!
i just watched the actual race. Pre was never boxed in or hampered by anyone, contrary to what was depicted in this movie. He did run his heart out though
he kicked too soon - i stopped watching the sport because "whoever kicks first loses" - like cycling the winner is usually whoever is in second place when they come off the final bend.
That's not even close to being true. Especially at 1500m and 3000m
He was not the best runner but he was the bravest, he was not the smartest either but he put on a hell of a show. It was a display of pure determination and although he didn’t even get a podium place prefontaine’s performance is one of the most memorable in running history. But Viren and Stuart deserves full credit for being the best fair and square.
I disagree he was a very smart runner. Given his body type and his skills running that way was the only way he could be elite.
What about Gammoudi? So often underrated, got medals in three different Olympics. Second to Mills in 1964 (10 K), 3rd in the 1968 10 K, winner over Keino in the 68 5K. In Munich 10 K, around halfway, Viren stumbled and fell, causing Gammoudi to take a full tumble over him into the infield. G withdrew and a week later he toughed it out in the 5K final, taking a good second ahead of Stewart and Pre. A truly under appreciated long distance runner in the Olympics.
Viren was doped on EPO and bags of his own blood cells. How was that "fair and square"?
This is what you're here for 3:05
Ian Stewart had a classy quote about Pre after the race saying that Pre Deserved the medal and not him. But, it wasn't in the cards that day for Pre which was unfortunate. Pre is my idol, my room has 1 Michael Jordan, 1 Magic Johnson, 1 1992 Dream Team, and like 8 Prefontaine posters
Prefontaine the only statue at Nike headquarters
I like the movie Prefontaine better. 1) Why do they make Pre look so relaxed when Veron (spelling?) look so easy. I mean his mouth is basically closed the whole race. 2) Who stares at the people next to them as much as the people in this movie do? 3) Why do they try to make it seem like Pre got elbowed and pushed nonstop? I love Pre but let's not make excuses for why he lost...
I like your points sir. 1) I think they wanted to portray the confidence and determination that Pre had when he raced. 3) I think they mentioned Gammoudi elbowing based on Billy Mills in the 10,000 meter race at the '64 Olympics. The scene later in the movie at the bar where Bowerman and Pre are talking, Bowerman blamed himself for telling Pre to hold back. Pre was a front runner and his strategy to hold back forced him to get boxed in and he underestimated the power of the kickers. They talked about it outside of the bar. Both films share a good, relatively accurate story of Steve Prefontaine, there are certain things that one film doesn't have that the other one does, and vice versa.
bengirox1 "prefontaine" didn't accurately state pre's reasons for running. also, bill bowerman was offended at how his character basically gave in to the AAU. the historical events were pretty accurate, sometimes more so than "without limits", but the premise of the movie itself was misguided.
Gammoudi was a hell of a distance runner; take a look at his career.
This movie scene and commentary is a lot better than the actual one
A lot of the commentary was from the actual race.
@@alanmackie7012 legendary, BBC, broadcaster, David Coleman with the call. “Gemmouti (sp?) is bankrupt, so too is Prefontaine. ..”
Much Love for Pre!! R.i.P.
RIP, Pat Porter, who played Lasse Viren. He died in a plane crash July 27, 2012.
"Now we'll see." So powerful and prophetic.
The issue with Pre is that he saw running as an Art; and each race was a potential masterpiece. It hurt him emotionally to lay back or strategize a win: he wanted to go all out and dare his competitors to run with him. That backfired in the Munich (1972) 5000 meters where he saw the slow pace an affront, and was forced to drive the race from the front. Without Limits does a much better job of selling who Pre was (played by Billy Crudup) as opposed to Pre (played by Jared Leto.)
I disagree if anything he should have forced the issue sooner. He allowed the guys with more straight line shorter distance speed to stay fresh for a longer period of time. That’s why his coaches were sitting there going oh god this is slow. This is not what we want. I agree the crudup version is better. He also looks more like pre than Leto.
Biggest inspiration ever this human being is is godly
Love it!
Whenever I watch this race I always think about how much Pre accomplished in such a short time and how he was guaranteed to win the 5,000 in 76 at Montreal
There is some good that came from him losing. I don’t know if he would have done as much for amateur athletes had he won that race. The endorsement deals dried up for a bit after that race.
LOL...guaranteed? No, he wasn't going to beat Viren.
Regarding the winner, Lasse Viren: "At the 10,000 metres final held on 3 September, Virén broke Ron Clarke's 7-year-old world record despite falling in the twelfth lap after getting tangled with Emiel Puttemans". Where's the movie about this guy?
Ask the Finns. They can make movies too.
Best part from 4:22 - 5:40 great commentary and music
hawaiisown50 song name please?
That 72 Munich 5000 was great.Pre was tough. It was a learning curve. He would have been back.He couldn't get any tougher, but he could get smarter. And he would.
Next time out he would not have allowed that race to go as slowly as it did at the beginning
Viva Steve Prefontaine..mi idolo
Aguanté pre!
3:08 wtf???? lol!
Got to give it to Billy. He transformed into Pre. Emulating a running style of an elite pro legend is not an easy task.
"The Europeans say he hasn't been in a war yet." Noone says that about my beloved racewalking.
Love the movie on his achievements.
The actors in this movie did a realistic job of recreating the final!
Donde puedo encontrar la pelicula complea? Gracias.
Por aquí la puedes ver subtitulada al español
why am i watching a reenactment or a race instead of the actual race? :) see ya
True Freedom Buh bye...don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
Pat Porter (who played Lasse Viren in this movie) died in a plane accident on July 26, 2012. RIP
Song is " all these things I've done before" by the Killers. As for Steward and Pre, only a hater would say Pre quit. Steward deserved the bronze because that's what he ran for. Pre ran to win, gave it everything he had, and actually surged three different times. Anyone who's ever run competitively knows you usually only have one in you; three times showed otherworldly guts. Pre just started doing high altitude training the spring he died, and unlike most of the Fins and other Europeans, he
he looked back, you should never look back
Nice win by Viren:) Lovely.
I was all inspired until I heard that gad damn fart
STeve still had many more records to set and maybe an olympic medal. PRE represents the top level of american runners like no other. Pre was like MOhamed Ali in distance running.
LMAO...never won a big race against the true greats....he was good at running his mouth.
One man made the race and the other man won the race. That describes very well this run.
I always get into the race although I know how it ends I always think its live haha
50+ years later it still baffles me that even at the time world class competition a 5k final the first two miles were so slow. Prefontaine had no choice but to pick up the pace and make it a honest race against the competition. Break up the field and challenge the best in the world despite being the youngest and most inexperienced runner i believe. Steve k new he didn't have the kick of Viren, Gammudi and others had hence why he went out to challenge the field and make it into a race to the finish.
Even in the early 70s most of these men were capable of low 13min 5k.
I was a reasonably decent 800 meters runner PB 2:03; and miler PB 4:48 in high school; although I was built like a safety 6 feet 200 pounds; people who have never ran competitively have no idea how difficult what Pre did at such a young age.
RIP Pre
The only movie I believe will have q different result every time
Somebody fart during the recording of this video. That had me dying laughing.

3:08 Don't get me wrong I think it's hilarious, but why put just that one thing in there? LOL
Put what in there? That's live audio of the race. The fart is real. Wake up sheeple.
Did anyone else hear that fart at 3:07 ?💀
Iv been playing this daily when I jump on the treadmill at the gym. Feel like I’m in the race and it get me through cardio by increase pace 😅
Goddamn, Pre ran his ass off, but the object is to win. You can't win if you burn yourself out. With his heart and will, he could have won easily if he just paced himself. This pisses me off!!!
A lot of those guys in the race were doping. I'm not very sure how the doping worked but it definitely helped a lot. I'm pretty sure the top 3 were doping. It really makes you wonder what he could of done if those guys weren't doping. Truley a shame he died at such a young age.
+6soulcontrol "Won easily"! How come? He was never close to WR as others in this race (both Viren and Puttemans made WRs in the same year). He was never the favorite. He may have been best in USA but in no way in the world.
PaulVinonaama If Pre had just held back until it really counted, I don't believe the others could out kick him in the end.
That was not who he was or what he stood for! If you know anything about him he was a live by the sword/die by the sword type of runner. As a runner myself I would rather put my all in it and make people chase me down and blaze out rather than save something at the end of the race. He had the balls and heart to make people win races honestly instead of waiting to see who had the best kick. If you think about it this way; think about all of the people who improved on the PB's (personal best's) just by racing against him. That is the thing a truly good runner makes everyone improve and work that much harder!
Joe Deleon He wasn't trying to make his opponents better, he was trying to win. That is the object of competition.
I think even if Viren was not blood tested.. he was not doped... no need to. He had not any per milles in his blood. He could respect other codrivers.
He came in 4th at age 21 dude. Pretty damn young.
Second youngest guy in the field. Viren was 20. Gammoudi was the old man in the field at 37.
Prefontaine's running style began in his hometown of Coos Bay, Oregon...the rugged outdoors of sand dunes, beaches and hills were his playground. Check out the new documentary "Pre's People" at: www.prespeoplemovie.com or Vimeo's documentary site.

Yes
If a runner who farted won the race and broke a world record would that record be considered wind-aided?
I'm fourteen I'm on the cross country team and I hope to become as fast as pre or faster
you’re seventeen now i’m curious hows you’re running going? pr’s?
Another sad running movie, put out last year is One Mile to You, but this one ends well.
Also, Billy Crudup is in it. Only this time he is the coach!
prefontaine would have creamed everybody in 1976 and he was just getting in to his prime. at 24 you wont peak any time soon as a marathon/long distance runner. he was 69kgs. current runners are less than 60 and much older than 30! peak normally occurs after 28 when body has nearly grown and now things have to be strengthened without being rigid. he broke all the records after munich is a case in point. A true great.
Viren was young too. Also, in 1976 his last 1,500 metres in the final would have placed him 8th in the 1,500-metres final held at those Games. I don't think anyone could have beaten him.
Lasse Viren was born to win. Winner takes it all. No matter what happens in minor competitions.
+mahtivaari72 except that it was found out that he blood doped
+Evan landed Tell me the evidence about blood dope. Rumours are not enough.
+mahtivaari72 there are sources where he stated in an interview that he admitted to doping. however, it wasnt illegal AT THE TIME so no repercussions were taken.
+Evan landed Tell me the exact source. In Finnish interviews Viren has always denied the blood dope.
and prefontaine was so pure...get real
At the end of this race Viren speed up without any limits. Good race.
Blood doping helps with that.
