In 2022, three major companies - Boeing, Tyson, and Citadel - moved their corporate headquarters' out of Chicago.

This is happening all over the country. SF is losing 2 Nordstrom stores....due to shoplifting and crime.
Another issue is that they're too easy on criminals. So they keep coming back. We weren't allowed to put our hands on shoplifters anymore. This guy went from store to store in our chain and robbed us blind. The company doesn't want lawsuits because the court system favors criminals. He doesn't stop. He wears a mask to hide his identity. He will never get caught because the police can't respond in time he's too fast and we are not allowed to touch him. The cops would have to coincidentally be there at the time.
Even then, the cops are told to back down as well. So in certain scenarios they're completely useless.

Spent close to 50 years in retail. People see the crowds in these stores and think they're making a ton of money. They don't realize discount stores typically operate with about a 5% profit margin. When shrink (theft) exceeds 5% the store loses money regardless of the sales volume. Retailers normally sign 10 year leases on a property, so they must figure the cost of breaking the lease is less than the cost of doing business in the hood. Now the locals will start whining about the food desert that the thieves created, but they'll blame Walmart, of course.
Let's not forget the employees that think they are entitled to "living" wages and benefits, stores have to raise prices to compensate for pay and benefits, that is the majority of a companies costs, but of course no one wants to talk about that.
@@admtahoe Employee theft was historically about a third of total shrink in stores prior to the current insanity. I had two mechanics in my Target Store 40 years ago who admitted to stealing $150K over a 3 year period before they were caught.

The city fought to keep big box stores out around 2004 or 05 but the mayor at the time pushed to allow Wal-Mart in. The aldermen were crying because they said it would hurt the little stores. Now they are crying because Wal-Mart is leaving after the taxes and theft have cost too much.

I've said screw Walmart ever since they bought a large parcel of property with older commercial and light industrial property and put over 350 small companies out of business all at once, then farted around for a couple of years trying to get their act together, all the while the City and State didn't receive the higher property taxes for the developed property and lost money on the businesses displaced who weren't paying THEIR taxes. Wal mart paid only the low undeveloped property rate. Only about 15% of the displaced companies reopened in another location. I have never spent any of my money in a Walmart.
The people crying the most are the ones causing them to close. If billions are lost to theft, you close the high theft stores. People are just mad that their theft location of choice is gone.

This is how food deserts are formed. When communities don’t take crime seriously and allow crimes to happen, businesses leave. The only one remaining are stores that run that prison with glass walls and everything locked up if lucky. I can promise you there are no fresh fruits or vegetables. Most times there simply are no stores to service the community. This mean that the community have to travel farther for basic products to survive.
Theft , crime and more death to shoppers. Thats the reality.

Actually they do lose money, when warehouses over send stock especially the fresh items, produce, meat, etc, it expires before it can be sold resulting in thousands of dollars in "claims". I worked at a Walmart in Canada before, the meat department followed by produce had the highest amount of losses every year, almost $100K a year. Tens of thousands a year in theft of electronics, health and beauty, etc as well. And the Walmart I was at was considered a top performer. Walmart needs better quantity control, they have quite the silly way of sending stock, they send stock based on the previous years sales, for example, say steaks were on sale a certain time last year and the same sale happens again this year, they'll send the amount of steaks that sold last year at the same time plus like an additional 50%, expecting the store to sell the same quantity as last year plus another 50%. it's that way throughout the store. It's a screwed up system that costs them money and wastes a lot of product.
You can't make a profit off theft. Chicago will just have to shop at the gas station.

In Europe store closures appear to be driven by the rise of online shopping. The same goes for eateries. No need for a restaurant when a kitchen in an industrial estate delivers via Uber Eats etc.

A few years back a family franchise, located in the middle of the "hood" closed down because shoplifting was so bad they could not stay in business. When shoplifters were caught, local prosecutor let them go with just a fine. The store WAS run by a black family that had been there for years. I live in a demonrat controlled city. So go figure...

One Walmart Supercenter in Sacramento was also closed due to excessive shoplifting. It looks like this is a nation wide problem for Walmart. The lower price supposedly benefits communities with lower income but revenues are offset by losses from crimes - a double edge sword. Supercenter are so big that hiring security guards or tagging products are probably just not feasible.

Yes, the violence in Texas, New Mexico and Florida are even worse than in Illinois. Walmart closed stores in those states as well. 8 of the 10 most violent states are run by Republicans.

I live in Portland and they just recently closed down our last two stores. People steal but i never thought it was that bad, so now we have more than 500 people looking for jobs.
You can blame Walmart for that job scarcity.
Look at your local economy before Walmart strong armed it by undercutting all the local businesses, forcing them to close and erase generational wealth.

Back in the '50s, early 60s there was a small food chain in IL called "Grab-it-Here." There was one store in Champaign that closed in the later '60s. I thought it had disappeared and was surprised to learn that the corporation had expanded and bought out Walmart which opened several "Grab-it-Here" stores nationwide, all in blue cities.
