10 Caribbean Countries Most Indebted To The IMF (International Monetary Fund)

  • While the IMF can be a savior for countries struggling to manage their finances, they have also been criticized for exacerbating economic problems in borrowing countries by imposing harsh conditions that are difficult to meet. This has led to accusations that the IMF is more concerned with advancing its economic philosophy than with promoting the economic welfare of its member countries. As a result, the role of the IMF in the global economy remains a subject of debate and controversy. Here's a list of what countries own the IMF: www.imf.org/external/np/fin/t...

    I'm so happy I found this channel. I was born in Dominica but now leave in the US. I'm always hearing Dominicans talk about how hard things are back home. I found no one was doing anything about it. My fiancée and I decided to put our money to help school children on the island. We both decided to adopt an entire school on the island. We will be visiting that school in April to see what more can we do to help.

      As long as money, keep coming into Dominican republic the government will just take the money and people will just lay back. I’ve been there once and within the month I was there. I don’t think they care about anything just send money from the US too much children that isn’t in school and too much people not working.

And it'll all mean nothing just because of the decisions of a few decrepit people called the government, I think we need take some investment diversification so as not to depend on the government to bring money especially now that war and pandemic has hitted the economy pretty hard. The worst thing to happen to Jamaica in the last 300 years, 1 slavery, 2 poverty, 3 IMF, 3 corrupt politicians, 4 ineffective business people who can only create enough jobs for their families and friends. 5 high crime rate.
    The best thing that happened to Jamaica. The ordinary Jamaican people. They create some of the best music that make people stand up and notice Jamaica. They become some of the greatest sports man and women in the world. Creativity everywhere They create something out of nothing even when those they elect give away everything they got. They produce food and shelter out of tin air especially the woman who are left to fend for themselves and children when the men give up and retreat because they are defeated and can't face the magnitude of what they up against. In Jamaica women persevere men fold. Without ordinary Jamaican, Jamaica would be just another shet role country that no one even mention. The ordinary Jamaican are the ones carrying Jamaica on their shoulders even though most of them never receive any of the profit they produce. If I was the PM ordinary Jamaicans would get a medal for persevering every year.

      Without slavery there would be no Jamaica. Slavery is totally unrelated to this topic. Poverty doesn't happen to a country, its a result of people that are not innovating anything and elect stupid and corrupt politicians to represent them. IMF is an evil neo-colonial system designed to subjugate nations who cannot control their spending.

      Jamaica is doing better than people make it seem. Once its GDP was over 142%, now its GDP is less than 100%; clocking in at about 94% by 2019. Given that Jamaica's economy has actually been improving this whole time, it's likely that the IMF debt is lower than than that (about 80-85%); and is actually projected to reach 60% in a few years time. This channel hasn't mentioned that Jamaica is one of the fastest Caribbean nations to recover from COVID-19, and has actually exceeded pre-COVID levels of growth.

      How is DR's 50% of GDP considered high. Maybe the narrator misspoke or maybe he doesn't understand what he's talking about. Indebtedness is not measured by the quantum of debt but by your leverage; in this case the debt to GDP ratio. This measures a country's room for growth inducing expenditure vs debt servicing.

    Jamaican here I love your work however I think context is important as it relates to Jamaica's debt to gdp numbers. Jamaica's debt to gdp is coming down from as much as 200+% of gdp. It has been reducing consistently and is now 78% of gdp. Last year we had growth of 5.6% in our economy and projections is that Jamaica debt to gdp in 5 years would be below 50%. I am excited to see what Jamaica's economy will look like moving forward now that the economy is growing.

      A funny thing I noticed is how shoddily Jamaica's section has been assembled in this video. Not only is Jamaica's the shortest, but it is oddly the most vague. Notice that they never mentioned that Jamaica rebounded from COVID-19 quickly. Notice that they haven't mentioned Jamaica has reached and exceeded pre-COVID levels of growth. Notice that they have NOT been mentioning the rapid growth in infrastructure Jamaica is having as of late, plus the many massive projects occurring in the island; some of which the Jamaican government is ACTUALLY able to afford. Notice that they have NOT mentioned that the IMF reported in 2019 that Jamaica made a massive economic turnaround, and it continues to grow ever since. Also, notice the lack of Jamaica footage; the visuals are either outdated or not even from Jamaica! It's shocking how off this video is; Jamaica is doing SO much better than this video lets on, and somehow I think it is exaggerating about other Caribbean countries too.

    Hello guys dont forget that Venezuela is the best kept secret of the Caribbean region. In fact about 2,500-3,000 years ago, farmers and potters related to the Arawak-speakers of northeast of actual Venezuela established a pathway into the Caribbean. Using the delta fingers of Orinoco River Basin like highways, they travelled from the interior to coastal Venezuela and pushed north into the Antilles islands of the Caribbean Sea, settling Puerto Rico and eventually moving westward. Their arrival ushered in the region’s Ceramic Age, marked by agriculture and the widespread production and use of pottery.
    Over time, nearly all genetic traces of Archaic Age people vanished, except for a holdout community in western Cuba that persisted as late as European arrival. Intermarriage between the two groups was rare, with only three individuals in the study showing mixed ancestry.
    Many present-day Cubans, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans are the descendants of ancient people from Venezuela , as well as European immigrants and enslaved Africans. But researchers noted only marginal evidence of Archaic Age ancestry in modern individuals.
    And even today, with economic crisis happening in Venezuela, the Antilles is seeing an influx of alot of South Americans (mainly Venezuelans) on the islands. In a couple years, if this trend continues, the whole demographic landscape of the islands can change again.

    This report is very misleading . You can't compare the debt owed by relatively larger economies such as Jamaica and the Dominican Republic to the debt owed by very small island states. Unless you really look into the figures it gives the impression that Jamaica and the Domincan Republic are the most indebted nations. In reality this is false. The most indebted nations in the region are 1. Barbados 146% , 2. Suriname 125% and 3. Dominica 108%, 4. St lucia 96%. In fact the Dominican Republic is one of the least indebted nations at just 50% debt to GDP. Jamaica has had the biggest reduction to it's debt to GDP ratio in recent years falling from 147% to 91% and it continues to fall despite the hiccup during COVID. So your report is totally misleading. Let's hope that all the nations in the region, both big and small can bounce back quickly from their debts exacerbated by COVID. The caribbean region is one of the most beautiful and fascinating parts of the world and I'm proud to be a part of the caribbean family.

    • @truth1844
      @truth1844 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not misleading. The title clearly states "Most Indebted to the IMF". The debt to GDP comes into play in determining the debt load and/or the country's ability to repay the loan but the topic clearly is about who has the largest debt to the IMF in the Caribbean. National pride ain't gonna change that fact. Jamaican currency also is in the toilet, check their other videos. People get too emotional with such silly pride and refuse to see reality.

    • @MeMe-lp4hr
      @MeMe-lp4hr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Common sense would tell me that if my debts equate to 150% of my income then I am more endebted than someone who owes 50% of their income. In 2022 Barbados is the most endebted island in the caribbean but I would like to see all islands reduce their debts. As for jamaica its debt ratio is actually 82% which is the lowest it has been for decades.

To not recognize Jamaica's efforts at repayment of such loans is tragic. as well it could have been made clear that jamaica was the only country listed that did not take out a loan to facilitate its pandemic woes. outside of that, this video was delightful.

Hence, tourism theoretically should increase because the foreign currency spent in your country goes farther than before devaluation. The problem with the Caribbean countries and many third world countries is rampant corruption. The current world order was set up to create a Cycle of Dependency on Western First World powers because Dependency is Profitable. The current world order was set up to make some countries, those inhabited by indigenous brown people Beggars, Buyers, Borrowers and Importers and White Western Powers, Givers, Sellers, Lenders, Producers and Exporters. The current world financial system was created by the Imperialist first world to be used as a weapon. The system was never designed for the Developing Third World to break free or to be independent but to become increasingly dependent. There are NO differences between the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and The Organization of American States (OAS) they are just tools design to serve the same purpose and the same masters. Working to achieve the same end, which is to create that system and cycle of dependency. The Financial Institutions are weaponized Tools, used to maintain the Current World Order!

    Jamaica should have no need to go and borrow money from the IMF
    I never did much schooling in Jamaica and when I came to England I was way behind my class mates so here goes
    America England Australia New Zealand Canada and even the falkland islands rally around each other and are willing to help each other in any situation they even give their lives for each other
    Now Jamaicans are a mixture of West africans and even some southern africans
    These countries have abundant amount of minerals that the whole world want
    Nigeria have 1/4 of the world's oil
    Now have anyone seen any of these country's lend a helping hand to help their fallen brothers and sisters in Jamaica or the rest of the Caribbean
    Even South Africa with its diamonds and gold reserves are owing the IMFmy argument is how come the white man can help each other but the black man always run to the white or Chinese for help

    • @Balanced3645
      @Balanced3645 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the "white man" is thiefing Afrikan resources & placing sanctions on those very nations, in an effort to prevent them from helping each other or their own.👁👀👁🤔 AND...All so called "natural desasters" are not all natural after all.👀👁👀👂🦻
      This is such a travesty, fast you take 1 step forward, you find yourself taking 5 steps backward between HAARP, the IMF & all these outright criminals at the helm, appear to be stared by some evil force at their base... I don't know how these Caribbean & World leaders can keep a straight face while lying to the people...🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥☄☄☄☄☄⚡⚡⚡⚡💥🙏🏾

    You people are so funny, your consistent and persistent bias and negative portrayal of Jamaica is really fascinating to listen to. Every other country on your list was carried from their past to their current status of their agreements with the IMF, and how those agreements affected the past to the present agreements. Yet when you got to Jamaica you just made it number one based on dollar amount, then you only focused on the 1970's, and left it there, you didn't mention that in the past 10 years we have moved from 147 percent of GDP to the 94 percent you mentioned and that it had gone to 87 percent of GDP prior to the Pandemic, and that we are fast to reduce it back down to the 87 percent it was at. You ignore the fact that economic austerity agreements are no longer imposed on Jamaica and that Fitch gave Jamaica a B+ rating, this year, and that the IMF hails Jamaica as the poster child of an economy which has used the IMF to turn the tide on their economic fortunes. But why ignore all of this, because after watching several of your videos I couldn't find one which didn't find away to present Jamaica in the worst light possible even if you had to be dubious in your presentation of the data found. Bravo you have officially had me make my final decision to stop watching these hack jobs passing off as data-driven lists of the Caribbean this or the Caribbean that. For a Jamaican who understands how data can be used to benefit or hurt, I am sorry your videos are corrupt and insulting, and as a patriotic Jamaican I will not waste anymore of my time watching this anymore. By the way, drop the word Irie and stop the cultural appropriation of a country you clearly hate.

      Jamaica is the biggest debtors in the Caribbean to IMF also to the Chinese; no one is saying Jamaica didn't make economic and infrastructure progress likewise in many other sectors its dept to gdp is reducing but with those IMF economic reforms Jamaica would of been in a much better position without dependence of these institutions

      This video's content is misleading. Not only has Jamaica's debt been falling consistently to the point where it is now below 100% of its GDP, but it is also projected by the World Bank to be below 60% in about 2 to 3 years time. That alone would make it one of the least indebted countries in the Caribbean. But taken out of context, this video makes it seem as if Jamaica has a heinous amount of debt with seemingly no way to pay it off. That level of deception makes this channel scummy as all hell, because the average person isn't going to fact check certain things to see how accurate the content is.
