    This western has never been bettered. It stands as the greatest achievement of Wayne and director Ford. Although he got an Oscar for True Grit he should have got one for this.

      This one and "The Shootist" (my favorite, for which he came close to being nominated, but the studio didn't advertise the movie, so...). "Red River" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" were worthy too.

    I love that film. Looking at the locations makes you realise that we humans are only here for the blink of an eye. All those volcanic rocks will always be there but the actors have all now gone, as we will be one day. Monument Valley it’s beautiful. John Wayne loved it there.

    • @headlessspaceman5681
      @headlessspaceman5681 ปีที่แล้ว

      ACTUALLY these are not volcanic rocks. These are an entirely different category of stone, "sedimentary" rocks. There are volcanic plugs or necks in the area but not shown in any of these pictures. Also it is the sacred Navajo homeland so who gives a rat's ass if John Wayne loved it or hated it there. Last time I checked he was an actor not an expert on landscapes or beauty or indigenous appropriation.

    If you think about it, it wasnt really that long ago when this movie came out, it was 1956.
    Some of the actors in the movie like Vera Miles and Patrick Wayne are still alive.
    On the other hand this movie came out before I was born so.......
    But kudos for making this "Then and Now". I love watching these.

    Yes,without doubt the finest film ever made. Some of the imagery that Ford creates is very unsettling for a 'western',hope, faith, redemption and plain courage are all qualities demonstrated by the key players and it's shameful that it's become fashionable to belittle John Wayne when he was not only an American patriot but always played a role that stood for decency and defending those who needed protection.
    Thanks Duke for everything.

    Great video!Nice job associating the movie with real life locations. We went to Monument Valley two years ago and took a guided tour with a Native American. He sang Native American songs along the way and pointed out these various sites as we came upon them. Being a huge western and Searchers fan, it was really special to me. Amazing how the different locations still look so much as they did in 1956. Nothing much changes in this valley.

    Just watched Fort Apache on the BBC and another Ford masterpiece. The Seachers is so haunting and confirms the importance of the Western in American and indeed World culture. It's the genre Americans have adopted to explain themselves to one and other. Europeans have to understand the Western in order to understand America. Watching a Ford Western is like listening in on a private conversation between one man and an entire nation.

    Nice!
    Something to think about is at one time this region was all one contiguous area. The plateaus, mittens, and totems you see here are only what remains from millions of years of erosion, mainly running water. This area is made up sediments from the Rocky Mountains that hardened into sandstone. Uplift pushed these deposits up causing them to crack. Running water and wind widened and deepened the cracks carrying the material elsewhere. What remains is generally the harder material or just escaped being cracked and eroded as much as other areas. At some point these formations too will be eroded away mainly by rain and wind rather than running water.

Incidently, Old Mo the man in the rocking chair had a scene in another film just before his passing away where he played his old man in a rocking chair. A touching homage I think.

    I commented a few months ago on what a great video this is. Lots of westerns, especially by John Ford, filmed there. Great place to film movies, not so great to live though. I visited a few years ago and our guide said I believe about a dozen Native American families actually live in the valley. Not much water available there. I do enjoy any video that shows move locations, especially a comparison like this one. Thanks!

    Is there ANYWHERE a director / producer who can put together a movie with the class that this movie had ?
    Without the filth that is so popular today .
