You set out to create a "still, serene and peaceful feeling in the landscape" and accomplished this beautifully, in spite of the fact that the image is built of strong contrasts. The darks are deep, the lights are vibrant, the lines of perspective race away from the viewer, while the horizontal of the far treeline and the top of the fence echo each other to reinforce that feeling of calmness, that in-the-moment quality that the best sketches have. I was gobsmacked to read that a prominent local watercolour artist, who paints in an beautiful, realistic style, said that he had always avoided doing skies because he thought they looked tacky. He must have been referring to his own inability to paint them, as the painting he was somewhat pleased with is horrible! The only painting l disliked.
I'm guessing gorgeous, evocative skies such as yours, stray far, far beyond his comfort zone. 😂
