The way she kept apologizing was heartbreaking. Her excitement for fire and light are two things most don't even think twice about. I love that she wasn't alone. You handled the situation with grace and afforded her dignity... thanks.
It's unbelievable to witness seeing someone become ecstatic for regular everyday stuff. I heard someone complaining about aging and the fact that people don't see him/look at him. Meanwhile, people are treated like she explained (soley due to needing simple things like food and clothes).....and he was concerned about that?!?!? Offering someone food (if you ca ) and allowing them to take on the position of ordering what they need and you discreetly slide in to pay, really makes some people feel good about themselves.

I've never really been homeless and I'm a homeowner now, but anybody can imagine what it would be like to need serious help, only to be given an empty pizza box or be given fake money. People can be so incredibly cruel.

I watched this and didn't cry. It sure does not mean I don't have a soul. However, it does pull at the heart strings and i watch knate all the time. He's a good man and i help people where ever I can especially the not so fortunate.
Never seen someone so grateful. To be treated the way she has been.. I can’t begin to imagine the things she’s seen in the 30+ years she’s been homeless. The way some police and security treat the homeless is absolutely disgusting. There was a story here in the UK only from the end of last year in London I believe, where a homeless person was sitting quietly in a mall, & a cleaner from McDonald’s decided to drench them - knowing full well they were there & didn’t stop despite being asked several times to, with a dirty mop and water, they weren’t even close to the McDonald’s facility. People made a formal complaint on behalf of the homeless person because it was the middle of winter, he was soaked through. The cleaner lost their job, & McDonald’s tracked the homeless person down & I can’t recall what they gave them now but replaced everything I believe, gave them some funds etc.

Knate have you thought about making just a few bags up of plus sized clothing for women? As a plus sized female it can make the world of difference being in some comfortable underwear / clothing, I believe Walmart & Target sell plus size clothing. You wouldn’t need to put many together but keeping a few close by might help.

I was a plus size woman, unfortunately, due to bad health I no longer have that extra weight, but I know how hard it is to find clothes. I cannot imagine being homeless and having the need for larger clothes. Nate, I hope you see this comment, and that we can somehow have just a few things made up for women that are larger, it would help their dignity along with their needs.
Necessity is the mother of invention. I would imagine that the backpacks Nate & his girlfriend make are filled with items that people told them they could use. Now that Nate knows there is a need for larger-sized women's clothes & shoes, he will make some new backpacks.

As a person with severe anxiety and panic disorder,I immediately recognized that. He could help her apply for ss benefits and housing. For someone like that,the streets can be a very dangerous place!
Very likely PTSD too or c-PTSD. People with PTSD end up on the street so, so often and just end up being retraumatized over and over again... It breaks my heart and makes me very angry. I agree maybe Knate could help her get benefits and disability.

Being from Reno/Sparks it’s infuriating seeing the cops threatening to write them tickets. There has to be better ways than to criminalize humans for just existing. Thank you for all you do Knate! You’re instilling a sense of hope into everyone you meet and help! Including the people of our community.
I don’t understand it, how are they can be able to pay the tickets? We give all these benefits to people flooding over the border illegally, but have so many people struggling and dying on our streets already

The sad thing about it is, most cops, not all but most, only see the homeless as less than and writing them tickets or putting them in jail is more money for them and the city/county. They know they can't pay the tickets and are expecting them to get warrants because of it because it looks better on the Cops for having more arrests or money coming in by dehumanizing these people and not seeing them as anything but another dollar sign. It's honestly sad and wrong completely.

Wow, that cop needs to learn to build bridges rather than threatening citations. I know there are laws, but there’s a way to deal without people - trying to scare a woman who’s got big problems and isn’t bothering anyone isn’t the way to get a point across. That cop could use to take a class about community building. He can still uphold the law, but instead of sounding all scary and threatening a citation, maybe he should also try asking the woman if he can help somehow. Get to know her a bit. Maybe the local precinct should do a community drive to help the homeless instead of threatening them with tickets they can’t pay and/or jail time.

I'm So glad to see you help folks in need with a genuine heart for them. I helped a young man this morning who had some learning issues..lived out in the desert in an old camper...and some while he was gone some young men came and destroyed his "home"...it is just appalling how people can be so unkind..and no idea what it is like to be without. Spoiled.. rotten. I helped him so he could get a meal..and soon another young man came up and also helped. God bless you! You are an example for everyone.

That was Sparks Police. Downtown Reno has ambassadors who respond over nuisance calls and try to show the homeless what resources are available. Reno also has a community court. So you either do community service or get services only available for certain small crimes. If they don't show up to community court then it becomes a normal warrant and then through normal courts. Not all cities have this program though. And if the ambassadors feel police response is necessary then they call and an officer responds. But they get really good training.
They know where to get resources etc but most people choose to live like that

Knate, you are an inspiration. You are so compassionate when dealing with these people. I am on social security so don't have a lot of money but I have decided to do what I can. We have many homeless here in northern San Diego County. There are a couple freeway off ramps I almost always see someone. I now purchase gift cards monthly for fast food places near the spots they are at. It's not a lot but will at least provide a meal. You have motivated me to do this. Just wish I could do what you do, please don't ever stop. As rents get more expensive there will be more homeless. We need more people like you. ❤

As I read through the comments, I saw someone had said that maybe you could make up a few backpacks in plus sizes for the women, actually, I agree, and I think that you could do a few for the men, people come in all sizes and shapes, and sometimes clothing can be a pain in the back side to find, I'll use myself as an example, I'm 6 foot 5 inches, 275, 38 by 34 pants, 3 XLT shirt and size 15/15 wide shoes, so yeah, there's no real standard size, not for women or men your doing what most people don't think of Knate, you're a godsend to the people you meet helping them out with a few things goes a long way, for anyone

I know where she's coming from because I'm large-sized, and I wear a lot of men's clothing. It's easier to find something that fits, including shoes. I can put together a nice outfit for certain occasions like weddings and funerals, but I'm retired and I'm not picky about day-to-day clothing. Yeah, Knate is truly a good person. I really do love that guy.

It's a shame she's been treated so poorly by her community. It's hard enough to be so homeless and down... There's a story how each one of them slowly fell into a hole and were unable to get out.
If you can't be kind, at least just close your mouth and walk or drive away. Insulting and tricking people doesn't make you cool, it's not funny and actually shows the immaturity in your thinking.
