My love of aviation began as a small boy when I was given a book titled "the Little Aeroplane" by someone named Lois Lenski and I am looking at the now careworn old book wrapped in protective plastic resting in front of me on my computer desk more than sixty years later. I used to ask my Dad to take me to see planes just about every time he took my late Brother and I for custody sessions. If he agreed he usually took us to the nearest General Aviation airfield where an agricultural outfit operated DeHavilland Beavers. From that time on I have especially loved the sound of big radial aero engines and always will. On one occasion in the 1960's I was wandering around the apron relishing all the delectable sights and sounds when I noticed that the main doors to one of the aforementioned ag company hangars were open and sitting inside like a dream come true was a dilapidated looking P51 Mustang. The place was unattended presenting an opportunity I couldn't resist so I shot into that hangar and up into the cockpit like the weasel in the old Disney cartoons. Though I was quite young at the time I can clearly recall the cockpit interior including a black Bakelite knob for fuel selection on the floor between the rudder pedals. Some years later I learned that the P51 was one of several returned to rudimentary 'provisional airworthiness' subject to 'special dispensation' from the Australian Civil Aviation Authority and salvaged from a remote airstrip at a disused nuclear test site. I learned to fly at my own expense at that same airfield as a teenager in the 1970's and watching Steve Wolf relate his story everything he had to say was as compatible with me as it could get.
I’d like to put a Verner 9 in a Luscombe with a bump cowl like that. Steve is first rate all the way. Did my Pitts checkout with him last fall. Hands down the best instructor I’ve ever flown with!
Well done with the engine. It sounds like a radial should. Please pass on my best to Steve. We go back to his Pitts days at Henley Aerodrome in Athol, Idaho, and I haven’t seen him for many years.
Steve is an outstanding ambassador for Verner! He’s obviously smart, has extensive aviation experience, uses only highest quality materials and methods AND is This enthusiastic about Verner. I would trust his opinion on any aviation subject 😎🎩♠️💙
Exactly my sentiments about the Rotec vs the Verner. The first time I heard a Rotec fly (a friend's Pietenpol) I disliked it. Sounded like an automotive engine---geared too highly and they have had some serious reliability issues. The Verner is a wonderful engine. Fantastic interview. Thank you for posting.
Took a Rotec apart from an engine that failed in flight, the pilot glided it back. I have never seen a low hour engine that was so fragile of construction, moving parts destroying each other into metallic and plastic powder sludging up the oil. The engine barely had 80 hours on it from install. The parts in that thing looks so delicate that, and I kid you not, I have seen RC model rotaries with more beef on their critical parts (according to scale). If I should choose a rotary I would either go Verner brand new or one of the classic American models rebuilt, I have a soft spot for the Russian Vedeneyev stars, those old Soviet Clocks never die.
I was in France the lucky owner of a Pitts S2B i loved flying so much, when i look at this Simson, i see nothing else but a master piece, CONGRATS STEVE 👍👍👍

Pumping gas at the corner station the other day when I heard a radial aircraft approaching. It turned out to be a B-29. What a sound! Me and the guy at the next pump stopped what we were doing to watch it go right in front of us. A nod and a grin.
Be still my heart...I love this guy! I've always loved the Round Sound also. When he made the Ricka-ticka-ticka-ticka sound during the interview I had to laugh! The importance of Direct Drive can't be overlooked, ( obvious better performance ).
Not necessarily obviously better performance. Geared engines can allow a more optimal prop to be used for a given airplane. It really depends on a whole host of factors. Blanket statements are seldom accurate.

The Scarlett series doesn't have a pass thru for hydraulic constant speed props. Electric may be possible, the current engine management system doesn't account for a constant speed. But there are some options we have been looking into.
Proper magnesium alloy choice with good casting is lighter and more rigid than aluminum. Starting one on fire requires prolonged heat and proper chemical balances, that generally don't happen in a simple accident.
