The problem is, there are a lot of nodding heads among the riders, but unless everybody stands up, it will have no effect. Imagine out of 30 riders 25 boycott a race and the remaining 5 go to race - thats the podium. And if the shitstorm afterwards doesnt amount to epic proportions and more boycotts, it will have achieved nothing but more and more riders breaking away and race, cementing the status of being pawns of the UCI and Discovery.
Remember the riders union talk from last year? That eventually fizzled because certain riders, high profile riders, just ducked out of standing strong for whatever reasons...
Its a bit baffling, I would have expected a united front in this sport, but it appears that some dont see the writing on the wall and just look at the short term business implications for themselves (perhaps also due to team pressure?).

Isn’t it about event planning. Surely someone’s bright enough to look at the planned events calendar and ask a question about the ability to put races on at certain locations at a point in time under ever eventuality. It’s not like they’ve not held an enduro here before.
Sounds to me like it would be helpful if the UCI put out a proper statement to explain exactly why they cancelled, at least this would answer any rumours.
The whole thing appears to one big unplanned mess this year! So much for growing the sport!

What Jordie was saying about no b lines and being difficult for emergency services is kinda bs. Dry or wet its the same. I also think that maybe the track and venue wasn’t fully ready to be able to host a world cup because if this excuse for the emergency services it’s true, well it’s just poor management from the start of the event. Also downhill is not an indoors sport, that’s why there are products designed specifically for muddy conditions.

Epic intro. I love a nice chocolate croissant (and chocolate brioche), myself, especially with some hot tea on a foggy day in the mountains.
Is some part of the issue that this kind of track is made to challenge elite racers but happened to go too far and seem too dangerous under imperfect conditions for less experienced/consistent juniors to race on? Or is it mostly that not enough work was done before deciding to race in this location to evaluate and ensure its accessibility for medical personnel?
I agree with the sentiment that young competitors (even younger adult riders, and even some older adult riders) can't be relied on to give proper consent or to not unknowingly put themselves in dangerous situations, especially when the rewards seem so high and combined with simple peer pressures as well as the types of personalities that tend to be attracted to more extreme sports like downhill racing. So, just from a moral perspective, the right thing to do as a tournament organizer of any size is to cancel the event for safety.
If more tracks like this are going to be made for elite world cup racing, I wonder if it would be better to have junior lines or alternate routes explicitly designated throughout the course, or a completely different track in the same area. Preferably the former, since it would undeniably suck for everyone to not have junior riders competing on the same track whatsoever, although other sports like climbing (sport climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing) have many more categories with multiple youth and junior classes that compete on different "couses" set specifically for their category and discipline.
Obviously, two big problems that mountain biking has are the requirements for being outside and needing a long track. But I think it would be possible on some complex/compound bike park and backcountry tracks that have several b-lines and rest points that offer more options for "route-setters" and medics, as well as more alternatives for weather to potentially avoid cancelling the elite races, although it could raise another issue for in-person spectatorship (and virtual spectating has already been problematic this season).
Or maybe nobody's ideas matter because of higher-level issues, miscommunication, or conflicts of interest within the new event organizers and broadcasters or investors. Not to mention all the different opinions and requirements of the parents (and sponsors) of junior riders.

If there is a lack of B zones and places for medics to get to wouldn’t that be the same in the dry?? I understand in the dry it’s quicker to move around but doesn’t that come down to the overall track design?? Downhills an outside sport, let them race FFS
