I have never seen a penalty shot like this

- Tonight as the Ottawa Senators hosted the Carolina Hurricanes we saw a penalty shot unlike any other I've seen before. Brady Tkachuk up against Pyotr Kochetkov. If these guys have anything in common, its that they're both a bit unhinged so what could possibly go wrong? Kochetkov made a diving poke check on the penalty shot that sent Tkachuk flying into the boards and he was NOT happy. The two squared up but refs got in the way and in the end, a penalty shot resulted in a 10 minute misconduct for Brady in just a wild sequence! I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

Kochetkov is everything Binnington wishes he was
Hahaha that's funny and true!
Just without the cup or whatever
Binny has a cup dude, get over it
Except a stanley cup champion
Couldnt have said it better 😂
Kochetkov has thrown a poke check in almost every game he's played this season. He's very aggressive, doesn't just sit back in net, and frankly it suits the Hurricanes well. He doesn't have the best save pct this year, but he's denying shots before they're taken.
He’s like the happy Gilmore of goalies… you don’t need to save it if they don’t even shoot it
@@rhys.ladouceur4107 It's a highly undervalued aspect of goal tending. A goalies job isn't to make saves. It's to prevent goals. If you can do that by blocking a cross crease pass, or poke checking, or angling a guy to a point where he has nothing to shoot at and just holds onto the puck those situations are just as good as saves.
Tkachuk should have been awarded the goal on a tripping penalty by Kochetkov
He is put in a terrible position almost every game 😂
He missed the puck and took out Brady's legs though. It was 100% a penalty
I love this old school goaltender toughness.
@@jaredlalonde2078absolutely, during the era of Patrick Roy, Chris Osgood, Ron Hextall, and Billy Smith, goalies were tough as nails.
@@BarnJI think the person above is a bit young to remember this maybe
Absolutely. I instantly fall in love when the goalie does something like this.
Ron Hextall 2.0
Hasek used to pokecheck a lot
Never heard of this goalie till now but he's my hero, 30 seconds in and im in love, the compilation at the start was everything I need to know. need him on my team asap
He broke out two years ago for the Canes. Kochetkov has been a great addition for their goalie line up. I saw the one on Edmonton he did last year in person. PNC went wild that night as it happened.
I'm a bit gay for Kochetkov, too.
@@esperagoin russia?
@@planetcaravan2925 No. Never in Russia.
Kochetkov is the next starting goalie for the Hurricanes within the next few years. He got his debut in the playoffs against the Bruins and handled the pressure perfectly, almost got into a fight with Marchand lol. His nickname with Canes fans is "Koochie" and he is well beloved. He doesn't have the best save pct but his aggression on the puck keeps shots from being taken in the first place. He's just very fun to watch, I think once he gets more games under his belt he'll really start to shine.
Kochetkov was prolly playing online shootouts in NHL 24, did a flying poke check and prolly thought, "Hey, I should try that in my next IRL start"
He does them regularly
A Tkachuk having a tantrum? Here's my shocked face...
DIrty ass goalie going right for the skates, obviously would be mad....
I mean, Kotchekov went for the trip on a penalty shot instead of going for the puck. I'd be more worried if a player just walked away quietly after a goalie makes a dangerous play
@@shawnhetherington9921 poke check, not a trip, poke check, got it bud?
@@bradenalbertson6367 I mean, pause at 2:18 / 2:19 . The poke check is on the complete opposite side of where the puck is. Poke checks are all fine and fun to watch, but a poke check gets the puck. This was just a trip to the skate, the poke check is nowhere near the puck lol
@@bradenalbertson6367 If your eyes saw pucks other than the one in play, then I think you've got floaters or a dead retinal spot. Get checked out for other stroke symptoms.
I love Pyotr's poke check. He's so confident with it, but not in the way that led to Mrazek getting freight trained against the Leafs in the Ayres game. He's got the right balance of confidence and aggression to make that poke check work.
Thats tripping plain and simple. Not a poke check.
@@joemccafferty6158 Poke check, and not tripping because the rules state once the puck is shot or control of the puck is lost the play is immediately over. He lost control of the puck and it ends up in Kochetkov's pads. Play over. End of story.
@@joemccafferty6158 Tripping were a result of coming in contact with big block of milled spruce in my view.
As a hurricanes fan, I love watching Kotchekov in net. He might not be doing that hot this season but I think he has good potential. Besides, he’s honestly hilarious to watch (in a good way)
Love Kochetkov. he’s an amazing goalie, and so fun to watch play. I saw him play with the Wolves last year and he’s got a hell of an energy on the ice. Go Pyotr :,)
Именно так
Need more of this in the NHL again
People say that until tendy gets a skate to the throat
Crazy good play from Kochetkov. He made two saves AND got rid of their captain 😂
That was dirty poke.

@@robertlavigne9828 I dont think so. I think he was playing the deke, but he never deked right. It was an anticipation move, rather than a dirty move.
Kochetkov is now my favorite goalie, playing some old-school style with the stacked pads saves and coming out to challenge the shooter!
It was pretty funny but really I don’t believe a penalty shot should’ve been awarded in the first place since Kochetkov didn’t throw his stick, he just dropped it. But it was entertaining! Thanks for the video!
Maybe if the NHL allowed sticks to be picked up again during play it would never have been a penalty. (THIS IS SARCASM) As in PICK UP THE DAMN STICK AND PLAY
@@madadhdbrain They do though?? A goaltender can literally grab their stick if it's within reach and play is in the zone. You can't shoot a stick back to the goalie that's the only rule regarding players picking up their sticks. Both that and you can't play with a broken stick obviously.
@@CapraObscura10.4 “a goaltender may continue to play with a broken stick until stoppage of play or until another is brought to him by a teammate”

Love to see goalies playing like this! As a forward I would hate it, but it’s fun to watch.
As a mediocre goalie myself, this dude is legit my hero.
Right? I'm an old geezer now, but when I was in the net, poke checks were so demoralizing to anyone coming in with the puck. Also, waatching him stack the pads and move like he does is just great stuff.
@@stringlarson1247Pyotr made a legit save and Brady was being a crybaby about it !! 😭
Не думаю, что вратарь сборной России может быть посредственным...
@@MrManfly I agree with you. His game prep must include watching a lot of 'film' of oppenents key puck handlers and having all that info in his head. Knowing how guys tend to move, their speed and agility is key to knowing are aggressive he can be and not get burned. Not every minder has the speed and reaction time to cut off the angles and still recover for a follow-up shot, etc. When I have time to watch a game, I tend to watch the minders when the puck isn't even close to their end.
@@stringlarson1247 No, his game involves looking at the other players skate and sticking his stick under it
You do a great job covering the games. Straight, to the point, under 5 minutes, and always with a funny observation 👍
Kotchetkov picked the perfect player to do this to 😂
Cry more Brady.
That goof is their captain? 😂
And best player on the team! Wish you were that goofy huh?
got to see this live on tuesday, was a wild moment. absolutely loved it!
Brady Tkachuk is unhinged, every game. Always looks like a road raging lunatic, like a rooster fighting another rooster. There is never a game where he doesn't act like a spoiled little child
he is a spoiled child
and that's why he's such a great player!
@@Simone-uu8ne A great player with 0 leadership skills and has 0 playoff series after 8 years of a rebuild and at least 5 of management claiming the rebuild's done??
He's a fierce competitor that gets heated. That doesn't make him a spoiled child ! 😂
Yall wish u had him😂
Is anyone surprised that a TKACHUK is involved. These guys are hockey poison.
A little harsh of a declamation. From what I've seen of both Tkachuks, they definitely have their dad's grit and short fuse. However, Matthew is by far a more complete player overall, whereas, Brady is a hothead who should not have the C on his jersey for his continued tantrums and poor sportsmanship. Being fiery and playing with passion is one thing, but his conduct just reflects poorly on his teammates, and he doesn't represent them well. If Brady cut that routine out, and funneled that energy into playing better hockey, Ottawa might actually be in contention this season.
Kooch basically had a GH hattrick in that AHL game. He had an assist, a goal and that should have been called a fight but for some reason was called a rough. How do you get ejected and it called a rough. He was in a full on fight as you can see from his pads and jersey being half off. Love this kid.
has a goalie ever had a Howie Hatty before this incident?
@ryan.8783 according to an article from the Edmonton Sun; Mike Smith got one for the Oilers a few years ago and it said he joined the club of Chris Osgood, Ron Hextall, Jose Theodore and technically Billy Smith who was the last to touch the puck when an opponent knocked it into his own goal. A regular search however says it's never happened once tho; so this information on this seems difficult to ascertain.
@@thunderhammerx2966 so the short answer is no, the long answer is i don’t know? sounds about right for searching an obscure stat/topic
@ryan.8783 was more of a maybe, but pretty much. Still, an interesting topic. Perhaps there's more info somewhere that deals with lesser known statistics.
Nice to see some goalies with personality.
That Sens fan in disbelief is amazing.
Thanks for this! I was wondering if there was something more to it after watching the game highlights
As a Panthers fan, I would love to see more goalies play like this, with the pad stack save and poke check
like the old days...i think they should shrink the pads and equipment and make the goalies use their quickness agility and skill. i think a few goalies would be gone right away, as many of them are just big with big pads.. they just basically stand there.. .this would create more goals and more exitement .
@@mr.xblade I think it would be cooler to see those 1990s pads again. Kenesky, Heaton, early Vaughn, Aeroflex, etc. Just those big 12" pads again.

Dude, he's like the Yin to Binnington's Yang. They're both complete CHARACTERS, but one of them manages to do so in a lovable and entertaining way...
Tkachuk is such a clown. You can put Brady or Matthew in front and it would be true either way. Classless and unhinged players
they're maybe the only ones among the newer players who can still play hockey as it should. No prima donna.
I actually disagree here. Matthew has matured *a lot* from how he used to act in his first few seasons in the league, he's grown to a pure player who has leadership skills up and down, clutch in the playoffs as well. Brady though yeah no he's still a classless asshat when you get down to it lmao
@@Simone-uu8ne as it should be? You think being a man child unable to control your emotions and turtling after people retaliate for your cheap shots is how hockey should be?

This is awesome. Love to see him stacking the Gumpers and his take no crap attitude.
brady is such a funny “captain” choice.
My new fave goalie. Kochetkov brings old school entertainment to the game. I love it.
goodbye Sens as your hothead solidifies the basement holding.
Go watch Perry’s penalty shot against Quick in game 7 of the 2014 playoffs. That was a picture perfect poke check on a penalty shot. Clutch AF also. But funny thing, that shouldn’t have been a penalty shot just like this shouldn’t have been.
Yeah, only difference: Kochetkov tripped Brady Tkachuk, he didn't poke check him. Another penalty and a minor should have been due.
Should have been an auto goal for throwing the stick
@@Bikerbobber well, an interesting idea. Anyway, the goalie has surely broken the rules twice, the latter one was also a player safety issue. I have the feeling this is not the last time we hear about him, and not in the good way. I never thought I would support Brady Tkachuk.
A goalie isn’t allowed to intentionally drop his stick in the goal crease. It is part of the interference rule. (Please do not argue the stick wasn’t dropped in the crease, but right out of it. A ref can’t have that type of eye sight. It was close enough).
Allegedly, Koch does this often, and was probably warned by the refs much like Murray was warned last year about knocking the net off. That’s why it was a penalty. ‘Throwing the stick’ was just the Refs way of clarifying what the interference was.
This isn't about quick
3 things I like seeing: 1) stacking the pads 2) poke checks 3) Tkachuk getting the boot
I've said many times if goalies started being more aggressive w/the poke check players wouldn't know what to do. Wedgewood did it a few nights ago on Kustnesov* in a shoot out, it was a full poke check but he did poke at him as he got in close and the dude shot wide. Hopefully coaches start picking up on this and training goalies. All the fancy moves these players are making they have to look down at the puck to keep track of it and it's the perfect time to be aggressive.
Do it enough and these players will make you look foolish. Kutznetsov comes down real slow so if you time it right, he can't do anything. Goalies saw that numerous times and adjusted.
@@richardprescott5939 Well it's not like back in the 80s they did it all the time but a player puts his head down then yea you do it, it also keeps the players guessing because now they know a goalie isn't going to challenge them. That is why Kutznetsov was so successful he was able to get in very close w/goalies basically just backing up too far and he had a lot of shoot at from just a few feet out. You look at that play and you see Wedgewood not back in as much as nearly all goalie does and he holds his ground and then pounces. Could of probably done it a little earlier if he did a full poke check but I get they don't really teach that so it's going to take some time for goalies to learn it and use it when needed not always.
This guy IS, the new era Dominik Hasek. To put it humbley.
What a baby lol, just mad he didn’t score 🤣

Karma coming to get the Sens.
He got out played and threw a tantrum. Nice goal tending.
Tkachuk had no intention to take a shot there and Kochetkov took advantage of it. Totally fine. Brady was just mad because he got called out.

That was gangster AF. Tkachuk gonna be at home tonight thinking about that one for sure.
B. Tkachuk doesn't seem like the type to think much.
Pretty fun save. Players are gonna get wise to it eventually, but it’s a lot of fun to watch this old school goaltending style.
It's laughable that people are saying he didn't play the puck so it was an illegal move. This kind of play is designed to take away any last second movement of the puck. Let's face it, a player has the ability to move the puck quickly left to right. What's Kochetkov supposed to do, just wave at the puck to stop it? Tkachuk had his head down and didn't see it coming. That's on him.
just stretching out to prevent brady from coming back that way. good save.

I love that Hasek style goalie, wow does it put on a show.
Woah, that short scene of skating the river in Ottawa looks like a fantasy land that I need to be in! Also, goalies are always weird, if your goalie isn't weird, he's swiss cheese.
Funny how Hasek used to drop his stick just like this 4-5 times every game during his whole career... and NEVER got called!
Kinda like old school Ed Belfour.... FANTASTIC. Definitely what you want in a goalie, a bit of swagger. Love that he stopped the penalty shot, and Tkachump got himself ejected as well. Doublemint gum commercial right there.
I'm hoping this game starts the turnaround. They've been in a sweious slimp as of late and they need some rebound wins to build up their identity and confidence.
The poke check isn't the issue. The issue is whether you can aim for a player's skate - not the puck. Competition committee might have to address.
He’s got a little bit of Hextall fire in him
Never did I think i’d see the day where every player that trash talks gets misconducts like candy in the NHL. This is like the fourth time it’s happened this season
All sports are considered Entertainment and this goalie is definitely Entertaining.....

This goalie is AWESOME. Never seen a goalie pin the puck behind the net and scrum with the defense
Was at the game, loved it
What's Tkachuk running his mouth about? That's a legit goaltending play. Good to see that style hasn't completely died off. Skaters have become to comfortable around the crease.

Then you've never seen an NHL game before 1990
Tkachuk DENIED! Great hockey play & goalie rocked that save!! Brady crying & throwing a temper tantrum 😂😂😂
Lots of people commenting on the rules of a penalty shot that clearly don't know the rules of the penalty shot. Maybe have a read before popping off ...
You can tell Kochetkov grew up playing Chel as a goalie 😂😂
He was playing like nhl24. Flying poke check 😂
Johnny Bower poke check awesome move
Since this game, Koochie has been on a tear.. has the GAA down to 2.35 and SV% at .911. Considering where he was mid-season, these are tremendous numbers.
Flying poke check!!
Hahahaha brilliant. Penalty shot because of a mistake by the refs and then a poke check and Tkachuk loses his mind 😂 What a sequence
Wrong. That was absolutely the correct call. If a player throws his stick down a penalty shot shall be awarded.... and the goalie threw his stick down in an attempt to cover more net and do exactly what he did by doing so.. Read the rulebook and get back to us.
Great video! Good Kitty...
