The movie, the Jazz Singer is about Neil Diamond‘s character, who is from a very religious background, and whose father wanted him to be a Cantor, who is the singer next to the rabbi in Temple. Neil Diamond wanted to be a rockstar, and his father basically said that he was dead to him. This scene was the final scene of the movie and made his father realize the joy that his son brought to the world. The woman was Neil Diamond’s love interest.
This was a remake of the original.
BTW; the father was played by Legendary actor, Laurence Olivier. The actress next to him; is Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's daughter, Lucie Arnaz. Arnaz plays the manager/baby moma. You have to watch the movie; it's awesome. The Jazz Singer; is a modern telling of the Al Jolson 1927 original The Jazz Singer. Jolson was a performer who use the 'Black Face' as his stage persona. A movie; no one nowadays, would want to watch.

The song has a lot of significance to Jewish people. My mother loved it and said that it made her think of her grandmother who, at 16, fled the pogroms in Poland and with just a small bag of belongings and enough money to get passage in steerage class, made her way on a boat across the Atlantic to the US. Hoping to be free.

i’m a die-hard metalhead who also loves hip-hop, and can honestly say Neil Diamond is 100% the f*cking man. i was lucky enough to finally see him live in 2017, 6 months before he announced his immediate retirement from touring when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. i took my 70 year-old mom and my 17 y-o niece and all 3 of us had an amazing time. he sounded like he was still the age he is here, and his lyrics are just 🤯 he’s one of the best songwriters to ever do it.
Had a friend in the Navy coming back to base in Norfolk VA and they played this coming into port. 🚢

It's hard to explain the power and magnetism Neil has unless you see him in person, I heard this is person, and it's amazing, all of his music is very original, and he does it so well.

Forever In Blue Jeans has been my absolute favorite since the 70s, with America being my second favorite song of his. Solitary Man is third.
You forgot one of his best. Holly Holy. And his live performance which can be seen on YT transcends music to a religious experience like Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

Fun fact, number 16 for most successful touring artists of the past 40 years. Was number 1 for solo acts in some years. 11.9 million tickets sold. Other artists have covered his songs, including Elvis and Frank Sinatra. There was a movie with the main character playing the lead singer in a Neil Diamond tribute band, "Saving Silverman". There's currently a Broadway play called "A Beautiful Noise", about his life. He told the producers he wanted the warts and all in order to get his okay. You need to know the bad too. There's also a song called Beautiful Noise, inspired by one of his daughters, hearing a Puerto Rican parade from their hotel room and saying "What's a beautiful noise, daddy".

Neil dressed so no matter how far back your seats were, you could see where he was. He had to retire from touring due to Parkinson's but he was still selling out arenas until then.

This song always brings back great memories for me. My husband and I traveled from Washington DC to Boise to see some frineds and it was 4th July the day we arrived. They took us to a baseball game and at the end there were fireworks and as they went off this song was being played. I saw the film when it first came out and loved it.
Neil Diamond's career started in rockabilly, early 60's. I recommend Brother Long's Traveling Show. But really, all his hits are high quality.

The Jewish man in the audience was Sir Laurence Olivier one of the greatest British actors and played Diamonds father in this film. (Olivier's own father Richard was an Anglican vicar!)

@@jstmez given the fact that he wrote the song after being told numorous times by other musicians that he is not a singer and must stick to playing guitar and writing. That is when he found the self-confidence to work and push even harder. Everytime his "demons" would tell him that he is not and never will be a singer, he said to reply by saying "but I Am, I Said..."

LOL according to my mamma (passed 2006) when she lived in NYC (late 50's to 1961) she worked with a woman who kept wanting to set her up with her nephew, who was trying to make it as a singer. She swore it was Neil! 😅 Not sure I believe her but damn he could have been my daddy if she had only agreed😂😂😂 ( I was born in1962)

Been enjoying Neil’s music for decades….have been to many concerts,never sat. Three hours of pure Heaven…no intermissions,no opening acts. Saw his 59th Anniversary concert,which sadly was his last due to his diagnosis of Parkinson’s. Currently his biographical play about his life is on it)# second year on Broadway!
About the only bad thing regarding Neil is that there was no video of his original Hot August Night concert. Nevertheless I suggest you listen to that entire concert - it's one of the finest concerts ever put together, and the audio recording is impeccable..

1. When listening to Neil Diamond when ever possible listen to a live version, he has almost as many live albums as studio albums, and was far superior when live.
2. For moving songs: Solitary Man, I Am, i Said*, Heartlight**, Love on the Rocks, and Shilo
3. For Fun Songs: Cherry Cherry, Cracklin' Granola Suite, Song Sung Blue***, Thank the Lord for the Night Time, Kentucky Woman
As an example of the difference between him live and Studio I would listen to Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show from Live At Madison Square Garden / 2008 and compare it to The Studio version I also would highly recommend listening to the Intro of the Album Hot August Night (1972) specifically "Soolaimon/Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show"

"I'm not familiar with Neil Diamond" ? Que ? I don't like Neil Diamond but that's a great song, it's an anthem to the immigrants into the US, particularly the post WWII eastern European, Jewish immigration but it inspires regard to 19th Century European and Irish immigration. I can't believe an American hasn't heard this before.
