I remember having a Tom Tom GPS too. It did sometimes give some pretty strange directions, like telling me to drive through a forest, or to continue on the road I was on, even though it stopped and started again on the other side of a ravine. 🤣 Those were fun memories, though. It's great to see Voodoo out and about, keeping up with his herd. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of his healing journey. 🤍

I remember the days before GPS and TomToms. I would pickup a map at the gas station and plot out my route on the map. Nothing like driving down the road periodically looking at the map to find the next road or exit I needed to take. Thank goodness the traffic was lighter in those days. I can’t imagine doing that today.

Jami, I am from the South where we have red dirt and white sandy roads. My husband is from a small town in Illinois. In the early spring of 1966, I put my baby on a blanket outside in the grass of my In-laws' home. He crawled to the edge of the blanket and when I reached to put him back on the blanket, I saw what looked like ground up charcoal. When I asked my MIL what it was, she laughed and told me it was dirt! You can imagine my shock!!! I loved your story!

When I lived in England, I would drive without any destination and had the TomTom in case I needed it. More often then not, I could find my way because English villages have at least one church with a high steeple. If I ever got misdirected, I would look for the church steeple. It was a fun way to explore and find beautiful places to photograph. 😎

The soil in Beeville, Texas is black. No red dirt. And it is very hard black dirt. It grows okra really good. Like 6 feet tall. Of course I didn't know how to cook it. It was my first time in TX back in 1976 from California. Boy did I learn a lot from my newly married Texan bronc rider husband.😮😮. I did cry a lot back then.😮😮😮

Been there, Done that. In the early 70s my cousins and I drove from Northwest Arkansas to Little Rock to watch a Razorback game. On the way home we detoured around the ever present detour and got totally lost! It was very dark and we ended up in a bean field. We could see no lights of civilization. I do not remember how we got back to the Highway but we were laughing hysterically just talking about what the farmer thought when he saw the tracks. Red clay? We do not believe
the commercials that show implements going through that nice black fluffy garden soil. Let them show red sticky clay with rocks. We knew to hose down our shoes before entering the house.

I firmly believe Jami would be great as the voice for audiobooks, voice-overs, etc. But I am delighted she has her channel and we have the opportunity to enjoy her via TH-cam. Before I had a cellphone I purchased maps from gas stations and kept them in ziploc bags in my vehicle. I also stopped at Rest Areas/Welcome Stops during my travels to obtain maps. Maps were awkward when traveling alone, I would have to locate a safer place to pull over to verify my next moves. I bought a Garmin and it was helpful - except for 3 times. I reached an red light/intersection on a 5 lane road and I heard 'you have reached your destination'. 2:00AM, pouring rain, no businesses were open that I could see and no vehicles except those that were parked. It was a v-e-r-y uncomfortable situation. I became aware that Garmin wasn't as trustworthy as I had anticipated. My cellphone replaced Garmin although I still have G. I now utilize both my cellphone and GPS in my vehicle. At 74 I no longer enjoy traveling. I continue to use Google to avoid traffic snarls as I do errands

Jami I totally went on the same adventures. Actually same time frame. I graduated from college in ‘95 and my new job after that forced me to travel to stay employed. I was given an address if my new work sight. I owned an Atlas and would stop at every state line and pick up a paper map at the welcome center. I would then purchase at local laminated map at the local gas station. I’d then give myself plenty of time morning of start date and head to work. This was a decommissioning government job always located in the middle of nowhere’s vile. I would always find a string of headlights heading in one direction. I head for the headlights and get in line. Found my job sight every time. You just make it work. Well done to you sister!

Way back before they even had GPS, on Sunday afternoon, when the kids were still small, we would pick a road that we had never been down before and go down it. We liked this one road gravel that we followed for over 2 hrs. Witch included stopping to pick flowers along side the road and watching new spring lambs and calves. I drove till the road ended in the driveway of an abandoned house! I said “ well, we’re lost. We can’t go any further! “ The kids started crying and getting real upset! I told them to settle down! All I have to do is turn around and go back the same way we came. The road may have really crooked but there wasn’t any roads running off it. 👍🥰💕💕. 👵🏻

Can I suggest a cleaning barrel for the food dishes. Just add water to help them soak and get a few extra to switch out when extra dirty. To keep anyone from getting in it put a board or lid on it and all you have to do is rinse out to feed. Yes, I did this as a kid with 4- H bunnies😊

I remember printing MapQuest maps. For those of you who don't get it, cell phones were not that popular and were not smart. So we had GPS, not me, too poor, and paper maps. My son uses gps daily on his phone. I don't know how good he is with a paper map. He also has difficulty visualizing where he is in town because he is so focused on a route, not knowing where about he is going. Seeing paper maps helps you get an idea of an area. Snips of roads doesn't do that.

We have rich black soil in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. Just like the potting mix you buy at the store. Only 2 places in the world have this type of soil. Nile River valley and us. Because the river flows north. Sugar beets and potatoes are what we are known for and the valley runs from the north and south Dakota borders into Lake Winnipeg Canada. You just keep road tripping and never know what you can discover 😊❤

I was young many years before you were, and we didn't have GPS devices back in the mid-1980s when I up and moved to the city I'm living in right after college. I learned my way around by getting lost -- not intentionally -- and finding my way back to where I needed to be. We did have those Handy Maps, and I had one in my car, if I recall correctly; and I had one of those folding maps that you don't see too much anymore. But I would just drive around until I found a street I was familiar with, and then I'd probably turn the wrong way at first and have to turn around to go the right way to where I needed to be. It was definitely an adventure and a learning experience. I do like GPS devices when I'm going somewhere I have not been before, but I guess I don't just lean on them as the younger set does, but I am doing more than I used to.

My parents soil was Black as coal but my garden is pure red clay have spent years improving the soil but it's still quite heavy. When I moved I asked dad if I could have a few buckets to help break it down and he refused! He would have given me the shirt off his back but I wasn't getting his soil! Lmao

As usual Jami I'm proud of whatever you take on, even your twenty yr old self :) Here in the Sierra Nevadas in California when you see red dirt it means gold is around. ;) Thanks for story time. And yes! I am an old lady who does maps still :)

I drive across the country (2600 miles) 2-4 tines a year. I still carry maps/atlases in my car because GPS can get 'creative'. I also like to explore or challenge myself to find a place again that I've only been to once. And, I live on a red dirt road half the year.

What about getting some of those red hay holders like you have in the goat pasture. The horses won’t knock it over they can eat from it came with the donkeys, and it would keep it off the ground

I agree ☝️. Horses could probably stand with a concrete feeding station too. Would be so much better on them than sliding in the muck.

I love road trips. Last year, I roamed around in northern Wisconsin on backroads looking at the fall colors. I ended up on a road where they were patching and my tires were kicking up the fresh asphalt. Took a quick peak at the map and a road was coming up, I thought good, I can get away from their patching! Turned on it, it was a named road with a sign, but soon realized it was dirt/grass one lane only because that's where the grass was worn down. Heavily wooded area so it was gorgeous with the fall colors! Looked at my map again and it said I should connect to a road at some point and there was really no area to turn around. Three miles later I came to a dirt road that was visibly wide enough for two lanes, lol! Took a left there and about another mile or two I came to a paved road again! I think maybe next week I'll take a drive about 30 miles west of there. Then in October, planning on roaming around southwest Wisconsin! 🍁🍂

I recently got lost following my cars directions! I thought to myself, i would just stop at the gas station & purchase a state map. I was shocked they no longer sell such a thing!😂😂😂 I got out of the mess & found my way out & then back on track, but of course was a scenic view!! I still couldn’t get over not being able to find a paper map anywhere!!😂😂😂
    Showing my age here!😂❤❤

I loved going down roads just to see what’s there, reading maps and picking the scenic route!
