That bike was called a “Mixie”. JD built them from 1973-1975. It was for both men and women. A US based company Steel Master Manufacturing Incorporated made 36,000 of them at their Taiwan factory.
Time is a flawed human construct anyway. what i mean is, it's time to celebrate somewhere! and it's summer in Austrailia! (i think? school was a long time ago)🎉 thanks for sharing your adventures with us !
Another bit of trivia JT, John Deere made motorhome chassis. They made them in Waterloo from 1986 to 1989. John Deere sold the chassis business to Oshkosh Truck. Oshkosh built a factory in Gaffney South Carolina and later sold the chassis business to Freightliner. So the next time you see an RV behind somebody's barn check it out. It might be on a John Deere chassis. That would make for a nice series of fix up videos. Happy New Year JT. Thanks for making videos for us to enjoy.
Hey JT, Happy New Year! I'm sure you, as well as me, started your mechanical career on your bike. My father had many skills but mechanics was not one of them. I enjoyed stripping them down and doing custom paint. Candy apple and lace (don't tell my mom) were my specialty. I even laced my first tool box! The grand sons are impressed!:) All those skills learned have made me the mediocre mechanic that I am today!😅
Reading some of the comments and discussion about the bike drove me to search the internet, then it occurred to me how spoiled we've gotten, and how vulnerable we are to un-vetted info. Happy New Year JT and to your whole family!
Happy New Year JT!!! I had a John Deere bicycle back in the day. It was a 10 speed, and it had matt black paint, with JD yellow accents. I rode that thing everywhere! It was a good bike. Also had a John Deere 340s and a 340 Liquidator. Good times were had on both sleds. Wish I still had em. Vids are great JT!!! Keep it up!!!
The bicycles weren't made by JD, they were made in Taiwan for JD. They were sold basically just above cost in order to get more brand exposure, good marketing at the time. It has also been claimed that JD wanted to unseat Schwinn, but that could just be an old tale.
Happy New Years to you. So I'm a wee bit older than you and I been bicycle tinkering for ever (well over 60 years now). I suggest something like Blue Coral and the finest scotch brite pads you can find. Go over everything. It'll knock back the rust and put a bit of fresh into the paint. You can use 000 steel wool on the chrome bits, but that might be too aggressive for the paint work. Look for makers marks ... It might have JD emblems and decals, but it was not made by JD. The frame reminds me of Italian Vega's of the 1970's so maybe be parts there? Take the wheels off and lay them horizontal on a trash can and flood the upper bearing race with 30 HD oil. Spin the axles with your fingers. Let it soak over night and flip it over and do the other side. You can lay the frame flat on two saw horses and turn the crank while flooding it with oil and turning the crank. A couple of days of that and oil should be running out the other side ... Pedals same way. A Yamaha cable luber will be very handy, and WD40 will work to get the cables sliding nicely. Once they are smooth, a trigger oil can and some ATF shot into the cables through the luber will keep them sliding. Then let's see what you have to work with ... 😁
JT., you are 100% correct. John Deere makes very few products themselves. John Deere sells anything they can. This marketing strategy has worked for years. If they can sell it to you in their store, and finance it for you, what else do you need? If you buy everything through the store by all means most people write off what is purchased at John Deere. It looks legit even if it isn't. In my opinion, John Deere is a master manipulator and has been and will be a very successful company. John Deere people will be hating on this one. I have 2 so hate on. I kind of like the way Big Bud Tractor Company operates. Anyone with a shop can basically work on their machine.

John Deere and SnapOn tools have the same marketing strategy. Build a brand that people are so loyal to that they will actually pay for the privilege to advertise for them and both companies will put their brand on just about any product that will sell. The arguments for or against both companies could go on forever and that doesn’t interest me. They both employ a lot of Americans workers trying to feed their families so I don’t wish either of them any harm. I’m sorta loyal to the Detroit Diesel brand and I even had a Detroit Diesel mailbox 📬 at my Ponderosa. The EPA told me that i either had to fix the oil leaks on my mailbox or take it down.
I miss my mailbox.
😆😆😆😆.
Well, at least if there was oil under it there was oil in it lol
