Jerry Cantrell falando sobre sua Dependência Química (2012)

Em 31 de maio de 2012 Jerry Cantrell falava pela primeira vez, abertamente, sobre sua recuperação da dependência química. Na ocasião, ele foi o homenageado do ano da MusiCares Map Fund Benefit por manter a sobriedade (desde 2003) e por seu apoio à Organização que o ajudou e ajuda músicos que lutam contra a dependência química.
O evento contou com apresentações de Duff McKagan com o Duff McKagan's Loaded, Ann Wilson e Nancy Wilson, Billy Idol e Mark Lanegan.
Jerry recebeu o prêmio "Stevie Ray Vaughan" de James Hetfield que não pôde estar ali, mas o parabenizou dizendo, via vídeo, que tinha mandado seu roadie Sean Kinney entregar a estatueta. Depois de um emocionante discurso do guitarrista, o Alice in Chains fez uma apresentação acústica bem curta. A única do ano.

Wow, hadn't heard the entire speech. SOOO many musicians are, well...junkies. And they all help one another to get through just one more day. You just KNOW that Layne was weighing heavily on Jerry's mind that day...all the "what ifs." Interesting that the BFF crown transfer post-Layne went to Sean, but then, he and Jerry were always of a like mind anyway, similar "natures" and both are absolute comedians. That R&R lifestyle is not a pretty one. It seems glamorous--at first. From what I've read, the AIC boys lived some of the most debauched lifestyles out there. But eventually it WILL catch up with you. It caught up with ALL of them. I'm just thankful at least 3 of them managed to pull themselves out before they ended up like their 2 dead band mates.
