I recently got into the One Chicago series. I use to have little regard for cops and firefighters, but now I remember what they have to face everyday. I now understand the true value of our "everyday heroes".
At first I thought wooden ladders are useless already because the ones made of steel are stronger. But now I realize at high voltage rescues they need wooden ladders because based on my understanding metal can get electrocuted
This kid somehow managed to have both the best and the worst birthday party of his life. ...Well, OK, it was actually more worse than better, but one cannot argue it's one he'll forget anytime soon. Not something that can actually happen that quickly - cutting off power through the grid generally takes a decent amount of time especially for these situations as you generally have to get crews out to site. Its not just some magical button in an office that you flick
@@TeamPhilippines Again not that simple. even at a substation theres not some magical button that isolates a set small block radius. isolation is actually a really complex task that takes time and planning. not to mention availability of trained crews to do so. Sure it wont affect the entire city, but what if someone on that block after they do manage to isolate, Something that can take a considerable amount of time with crew travel and etc, has life support machines and will die with out power to them. Isolation is not a simple flick the switch off then back on. It takes a considerable amount of time to take down a section of the grid and triple the time to put it back up
@@ianperry4768 oh right I knew rubber doesn't conduct electricity but for some reason I thought all modern shoes didn't use rubber for the soles unless it was for like construction boots or something... don't ask the logic behind that thought coz I genuinely don't know lol thanks for enlightening me though 😊 xx
@@ianperry4768 "By lifting his feet he will unground himself (shoe soles are rubber and rubber doesn't conduct electricity) and be shocked." Not quite right, whoever told you that is wrong. The right answer is a thing called "step potential"...basically, the level of voltage around a downed wire changes in a ring-like pattern, with the highest voltages nearest the wire, decreasing the further you get away from it. What causes a shock is the DIFFERENCES in voltage between two points...if your feet are touching a point with both at the same voltage, no current can flow. Moving one foot away from the other means that you now have a difference in voltage, which could now flow up one foot, through your body, past a very tender area lol, then back down to the other foot. Which would result in you getting shocked. By shuffling and not lifting your feet, you will keep the voltage between them constantly the same as you move away. Thus, no shock. Taking normal steps would result in your feet being at very different voltages which can shock you, possibly fatally. Google it for more information. Oh, and I am gonna also add: The myth that "electricity (always)seeks ground" is FALSE!! Electricity seeks ALL PATHS BACK TO ITS SOURCE, which often includes ground. The current WILL DIVIDE amongst ALL of the paths, with the current value depending on the resistance of each path. Google Ohm's Law for details on how to calculate those values.
If that accident happen in my smalltown, just cut the power from main generator for some minutes. But thats big city we cant just stop the electricity for small reason.

Gotta love the admiration the kid's eyes have after he got saved. You can just see him thinking "One day I'm gonna be just like them"
Exactly Maybe we'll see him in the show????????? Or he's just a Firefighter for a different company...????

O my
He knows who he is going to be when he grows up.
A textbook example on improvising, adapting, and overcoming a critical situation.
I have high respect for Firefighters, Police Officers, and especially Paramedics and the field of medicine.
Eeyup, they put their lives on the line every day.

So proud of the way he covered the little boy with his body
My son has wanted to be a fireman since he was 4. He says cause he wants to help people. I am proud of him.
That is awesome!❤️
This kid made a thank you card for severide and it made his day
At first I thought wooden ladders are useless already because the ones made of steel are stronger. But now I realize at high voltage rescues they need wooden ladders because based on my understanding metal can get electrocuted
Metal is an excellent conductor of electricity.
Wow, you’re just learning about that? Congrats 😂
Such a great episode! I ❤️ the boy's face at the end when he's looking at Severide! So cute! 😜
I'm binge watching these videos and all of them make me shake

Especially when they have you on the edge of your seat, at least for me it does.

First time I was in the States I couldn't believe my eyes that they still had those exposed powerlines all over the place.

Not sure if they have them in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Some Fire Departments still use wooden ladders such as San Francisco because of the cable car wires, Los Angeles City and County.
He was the boy locked in a room in a house on Chicago P.D
love this show !! :) I once could watch full episodes here on TH-cam, but I can't find it anymore. any ideas?

It would make sense to have the electricity company shut off the power for that entire block

They did not cut the power from the SubStation/Power Station? That the Easiest way to rescue that.
I dont think you understand how long that can take... they'd have to wait for the power companys crews to come out and isolate..
@@TheNonMakeupGuru That's easy only if they have some sort of a Substation that can be cut and still not gonna affect the entire city.
