My brother-in-law, sister, and I used three of these little FRS radios to communicate between our cars on a 1,000-mile caravan from Oregon to Texas. They worked great for coordinating bathroom stops, food stops, route changes, etc. In fact, they were way better than trying to make phone calls since we could all three hear everything at the same time.
Much of Iowa had a day or two internet and cell phone outage recently due to a water pipe break in a server building. This year we also had an communications outage in a local health system. Appointments were cancelled because charts couldn't be uploaded. I haven't carried a prescription to a pharmacy in a LOOONG TIME. We have a pair of 25 year old walkie talkies that still work. Range is typically two miles, max advertised was 25 miles. But if the channels get crowded in an emergency I'm sure it could easily be measured in fractions of a mile.
I have not had a lot of luck in terms of range, obviously that could change depending on the situation. At some point I will invest in better equipment.
I've used these before , great for short distances .. I'm thinkin' sattelite phone , but thats more of an investment We used Motorola's in the military , those were great but thats more than I want to spend , about 5K each Thanks Daniel !
I was just thinking about this yesterday! What would be the best radios, and what would be compatible to truckers and construction workers. Thanks for this!! ❤
Haven't successfully hit a GMRS repeater in my area yet, although there are some listed. Thinking of getting a high wattage GMRS base station so that gives me at least one pair.
I am not sure, I have been trying to hit the repeater in my area with no luck or no response. My test is to use two radios farther apart than they normally reach and try to connect them both to the repeater. If it works I should be able to talk between them. Great question and thank you for being here!

They can be really useful, thanks for being here
it's all some thing to think about
Thanks
Thanks for the insightful information on the radios to stay connected with others if our phones go down.
Happy to help!
We have a similar set. They work great to stay connected on our 50 acres.
Glad to hear that they work well for you, thanks for being here

I have looked at the Motorolas, they are very expensive. Thanks!
Those radios can be used with headsets
I think they came with ear buds

I don’t know what the rules are over there for HAM or GMRS, HAM has the best range. GMRS is sort of a middle ground between HAM and FRS.

I found that there is one in my area. I am trying to hit it now.
@@twodrshomestead how do you know if you hit one? i never get anything

The radio s like most you only get maybe 1 mile 2 or 3 if under good conditions.🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏🙏🙏🙏🌎🌍⌛⏳⌛⏳🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖
If you use a GMRS repeater tower you can get out 30 plus miles
It all depends on conditions
Very true
