Speaking of parties, I know you've done episodes on punch, but I'd love to see some more info on how to scale up cocktails. Punches, bowls, pitchers, that sort of thing.
That bottled Negroni has great utility for me because I don't really keep Campari in my bar (it's expensive for something I don't drink frequently).Good to know it tastes good, I'll check it out!
I'll make a negroni with aperix, the aperol knockoff. It comes out a little sweet for a negroni, but still really good, and you've cut the price of the most expensive component by 1/3.
while I do agree with you that I dont tend to keep a bottle of Negroni in my shelf, I think a bottle of those tiny bottles would be a better option. The fact that its premixed is a big demerit imo
If you're talking about what I think you are those fall under the "not a cocktail" umbrella. They don't use the spirits they're supposed to they just mix some fruity flavors with wine for the alcohol content. Nice sometimes on a hot day but not going to be the best tasting cocktail you've ever had or even a half decent expression of the cocktail they claim to be.
@The_Game_Professor Freezer door cocktail refers to prebatched and often pre-diluted cocktails you make yourself and keep in the freezer so you can just pour a cocktail without mixing ingredients or stirring (usually stuff like negronis or old fashioned as citrus in shaken drinks will bring the abv down and it'll freeze). The quality is entirely dependent on your recipe and ingredients. A while ago I prebatched a rum old fashioned with a blend of Doorlys XO, Smith and Cross, and a little Hamilton 151 and it was scrumptious while it lasted, which was not long!
Hosted a party for 35 people in June. I pre-batched 8 bottles of four pre-measured cocktails and had a beer on hand. Sure, people had to add ice, just like they had to put ketchup on their hotdog or dressing on their salad. But it meant that cocktails were evenly balanced and nicely chilled all night.
I actually found this *very* useful. Thank you for it! :) While I generally do prefer mixing something myself, I am rather lazy and my friends and family tend to have a bad habit of making me the go-to bartender for get-togethers, so having some good premade options for people who aren’t into mixology is quite helpful. Plus, having a good number of ingredients or specialized bottles on-hand is expensive, so…it’s good stuff to know all-around, let’s say.
"We're not doing anything that says seltzer. Except like half the ones we tried. And we added seltzer to some too" Lol great episode. As a person who finds even weak alcoholic drinks repulsive, I thoroughly enjoy this show in a way I have no explanation for.
I wish Japanese chūhai were easier to get here in the US. Short for "shōchū highball", it's made with shōchū (original versions; a distilled spirit that can be made from a variety of sources) or vodka, and is usually some fruit flavor. It's more or less analogous with what you were sampling here, I think!
I don’t know if you’re welcome to it but seeing as how popular the matrix videos are, here are some ideas Martini Matrix - Gin x Dry Vermouth Split Rum Daiquiri Matrix - 1 oz. Rum A x 1 oz. Rum B Sidecar Matrix - Cognac (maybe some other similar type brandy options) x Orange Liqueur Gin & Tonic Matrix - Gin x Tonic Negroni Matrix - Gin x Sweet Vermouth Last Word - Gin x Green Chartreuse & substitutes. Could also do a video about green chartreuse substitutes in general
The Bacardi canned mojitos are actually pretty solid. You get the lime, mint and rum when you drink it. As far as premade cocktails go it’s definitely at the top. ABV is still low but it’s one of my favorites
Those pre-made Jameson's are actually quite good, I find them perfect for when I want to have a drink while cooking so I don't have to waste time making another cocktail 😂
Campari's Bottled Negroni uses Cinzan Rosso and a London Dry Gin (some people say its Bankes), for anyone curious to recreate it. I can't find Bankes where I live, so I'd just use Beefeater's probably. Campari says they use the 1:1:1 recipe. Cinzano is a decent sweet vermouth. It's not heavy on the vanilla like Antica is, and it's a lot cheaper.
my favorite in this category or near this category is the Finnish long drink it’s a Gin grapefruit drink, you could argue that it’s a seltzer but i think it’s closer to a cocktail then a whiteclaw, and they make a 5.5 and an 8.5 abv version.
Just throwing this out there in case you're following the TH-cam comments but I would love more Meredith. Been missing her the past few episodes and felt like I was teased with her this one. I am glad I can fall back on Midnight Local, but I do miss her being more present on HTD.
My favorite canned cocktail is from Social Hour Cocktails, specifically the Prizefighter (the company was co-founded by Julie Reiner who founded the Clover Club). All of the different ones I've tried are delicious, and several are over 10% ABV. I think they're mostly sold in store in NYC and NJ, but they do ship to a bunch of other states.
Best canned cocktail I ever had was Templeton Rye's mule, but It also helps that I bought it in the same state that the distillery and bottling company is in, so it wasn't sitting for long before I drank it.
I found out a cornershop next to me started selling le coq cocktails, and their cuba libre is quite good. You taste rum you taste coke, you taste lime, but separately, not mixed together. Still pretty good, great if you want just throw some in cooler and have during gaming session
Just got to the Bacardi canned things and I have to share a story now A few years back I was living in a city with extremely close access to warm beaches, so my go-to method of relaxation (at least every other weekend) was to go to the quietest stretch of beach I could find, alone, and just relax in the sun for a few hours, sometimes with a drink. One time I was at the liquor store and in the RTD section I noticed that Bacardi sold rum punch in *_bags._* Like full-on Mylar bags with a spigot at the bottom. Thought it'd be a fun thing to bring to the beach (and, to be honest, in a profoundly dirtbag moment, hoped that since it was vacuum sealed and alcoholic, I could possibly even just leave it in my cooler between beach trips). This was a far cry from the rum punch that appeared in this video; in addition to being still, it was something like 14.7% ABV. Kind of tasted like dollar store fruit punch with one part Malibu and two parts well rum. It was easy enough to drink though, especially on a hot sunny day when the bag was ice cold. Too easy, in fact. I hit it way too hard. At one point I was drinking straight from the bag, full Bacchanal. I then fell asleep in the sun. I woke up several hours later to the tide coming in and soaking my belongings, sunburnt, dehydrated, and still a little drunk. I had apparently drank like half to two thirds of the bag and felt like a sun-baked dog turd. I really don't know how I didn't get sick. The cherry on top is that I actually had a quasi-date scheduled that night for about 5:30. I woke up on the beach at 5:15. Needless to say the date did not happen. Still one of my most embarrassing moments.
Cazadores makes a canned Paloma that is fantastic. It has the acid you were missing from the one you tried, with a real tequila presence. It's great by the pool, and even better when you sip an ounce and top it off with more Cazadores reposado.
I'm a bit of a Manhattan snob and I actually really like the Bulleit Manhattan. Is it as good as a homemade Manhattan? No. But its a quick, easy, great tasting Manhattan when I just don't feel like making my own. Its honestly impressive just how close to the mark Bulleit hit with these.
Back when you did the boxed cocktails, you said you liked the Crafthouse pineapple daiquiri & wanted to try more from them. Any chance of that happening? Or did that idea not pan out?

Hey Greg, love these videos! They are always extremely informative. I havent looked since youve put up this video, but a month or two ago, I was trying to get the Post Meridian drinks from watching your previous video, and I could jot find them on there at all. Ended up buying dorect from PM's website. I like the ide of the canned cocktails as a way to try something new, without having to worry about having large quantities of ingredients leftover if I dont like it.
I would love to see Greg try some of Dogfish Head's canned and bottled cocktails. They definitely aren't widely available (just small region of the mid-atlantic coast) but if you plan on doing another episode like this in the future Dogfish Head is a solid choice for actual canned/bottled cocktails.
I love a Cutwater Mai Tai with a splash of lime juice. I don't drink often enough to have a collection of bottles and cans give me what I want in most cases.
Great video Greg, I think you did an excellent job of figuring out which products work and which just don't. It amazes me that some of the stuff out there can be so terrible, while others do the trick. For me personally, I can't see getting any of these products for two reasons: I'm one of maybe 3 people at our parties who appreciates a cocktail at all - most of the folks we'd have over are in the beer / cider / seltzer camp, and that's just fine, but that means if I want a cocktail (and I do, I don't care what time or day it is, I do), I'm going to make it myself. Especially since the better ones you found here were the bottles that require some extra attention anyway, it's nearly just as easy for me to pour whisky, simple, and shake some bitters as it is for me to pour one thing over ice. The difference is negligible to me.
Thank you Greg for validating my absolute disdain for artificial sweeteners in diet sodas. I get this whole "low-sugar" movement we got going on worldwide, but can we please just keep them low sugar without having to add sweeteners that taste like Death and Taxes? Also Greg's profound trauma with Manhattan's will always be my favorite bit of channel lore. Not only was it one of the first videos I watched from this channel, it's also an example of the reason I can't drink Tequila any more.
Mooood, there's good reasons to cut sugar and some things do need the sweet but I wish more options were just less sweet and didn't add metallic -tasting bullshit to make up for the lack of sugar.
I have found that the place to get the most consistently good canned cocktails is LCBO. I live in Michigan and my family goes to Canada pretty often. I honestly don't even bother with mixing my own drinks there anymore, the canned cocktails are plenty good enough. Not all of them are winners, of course, but they have a really good selection in my experience.
For the part 2, cutwater white Russian/ margarita, clubtails big can, monoco, 10 ball, mxd, basically cheap high alcohol cocktails. See if there are any diamonds in the rough!
If you want cocktails for a party, make a batch of something batchable and get solo cups. The cans only work over ice and usually need to add fresh fruit because you can't can fresh fruit.
Greg, thank you so much for the Alca Chino recommend. I hunted them down and firmly give them a thumbs up. If anyone likes a Starbucks Mocha. Whatever AND likes to get falling down drunk, then this is he canned cocktail for you! It's GOOD!
I remember seeing the cans of Jack & Coke outside the Daytona 500, and probably the Coke Zero 400, but the drink I remember the most from the track were the "5 Hour Painkillers" which were painkillers with a floater (it might have been mixed in) of 5 Hour Energy who I believe were sponsoring a race that weekend.
The coffee stuff is right up my alley. I rarely drink, but when I do I buy a bottle of Baileys or Black Irish and mix it with milk or espresso. If you have any proper coctail ideas for a similar thing, be happy to hear them.
I don't mind the jameson ginger/lime. I really like ginger and lime though, and my preferred drink tends to be sipping on scotch, so it's close enough to the things I like.
It's something when traveling or somewhere you might not have a bar/cocktail making equipment. I can see it in a hotel room or when camping. Great for like a RenFare or something... It has a place, maybe not often, but I can see it.
I think the bottled cocktails are convenient for if you don't have a stockpile of ingredients already and just want to buy one bottle vs like two or three needed to mix a drink.
Have you had a chance to try Jeffrey Morgenthaler's canned cocktails? I've been pretty impressed with them. There's two lines, ones made with malt alcohol that can be sold in corner stores, and ones made with real liquor that can only be bought in liquor stores.
Kindve a regional thing but watershed distillery makes a premixed old fashioned that is really good. An easy cocktails to make, but they do have a good one
It may just be a regional thing in Virginia, but the Devils Backbone Smash series of Vodka cocktails (Orange Smash, Lemonade Smash, and Lime especially) are really refreshing, and 10%.
Your qualm with the aspartame is probably a reaction to acesulfame K, which is often paired with aspartame to provide a fuller bodied sweetness. Some people have a specific gene that makes acesulfame K taste unpleasantly bitter instead of sweet.
They all suck to me. Sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame K… …none of them taste good (to me.) Even stevia, which is natural, has a weird bitterness most of the time that I really don’t enjoy. The only alternative sweetener I’ve ever been able to tolerate is erythritol when I was on keto. It’s a sugar alcohol that’s less sweet than sugar, and it’s *okay.* But there is a weird menthol-ish cooling sensation that I kind of had to get used to for awhile. But nothing is going to taste as good as real sugar to me. And that’s a real shame, because it’s terrible for you in the amounts that make things taste wonderful, lol.
1:48 If that's Coke Zero, it should be Acesulfame Potassium (or Acesulfame-K) not Aspartame. A lot of the recent "zero sugar" soft drinks are using Acesulfame-K instead of Aspartame because is has a similar mouth feel to sugar that Aspartame lacks. I like Aspartame. Pepsi took it out of Diet Pepsi (my preferred beverage) for awhile because The Public was outcrying, and it sucked. I like the Acesulfame-K stuff too. I really appreciate having lots of zero-sugar options in the soda isle of my local Walmart.
I saw the two Bulleit canned cocktails while on a trip with the missus, but ended up getting the Knob Creek Old Fashioned to try back at the hotel. I was pleasantly surprised with how enjoyable it was.
Got a bunch of those MOTH canned cocktails for a festive last moth and they were pretty good if a little dangerous for festival drinking, can highly recommend them though
I can't believe you haven't caught Tip Top in two rounds of this! I'm just so curious of your opinion about Tip Top as they are seemingly making a real effort to hit the "true cocktail" essence that is missing in so many of these.
The jack and coke is a personal favourite of mine, though here in canada, our version of it doesn't actually use coke - its some sort of generic cola that's a tetch sweeter, though i think our abv might be slightly higher (the can is definitely bigger, at least). I usually pack one for easy hikes, picnics, things of that nature. Quite good for what it is!
So, I've been exploring the canned cocktails that are available where I live over here in the Seattle area, and one of the ones that I _absolutely_ love is a canned cocktail that were made for Seattle's new NHL team, The Kraken. They're called Kraken Drops, and they come in two flavors, a lemon and a raspberry (though, more raspberry-lemon), and I find them to be quite pleasant. I should figure out how to send you some of them. I've had some good luck with canned cocktails from Cutwater, and I've also... experimented around with the "Buzzballs Chillers" which mainly have the benefit of being able to just get myself a glass of ice, crack one open and pour it in, and not really have to worry past that. So, they're convenient.
i like the kraken and cola they sell bc i dont want a whole bottle of kraken, im never gonna drink that much, but sometimes i do want the occasional rum and coke and thats the best one ive found. i also dont really enjoy the taste of alcohol, so i like that its pretty much all coke
Standard aluminium beverage cans require pressure to be properly strong. You have a hard time crushing an unopened can (piercing yes, crushing, no), but can crush an opened one easily. Anything without carbonation will need to be in a bottle, not can.
Bro!!’ You completely passed up Cutwater! There is nothing from them that I wouldn’t drink but my absolute favorite and drink of choice atm is the Tiki Rum Mai Tai. Put that on ice and I’m in high proof heaven (12.5%)
Muckleyeye is a local NJ distillery in my hometown! They actually have a really good gin and a very good rye as well as a bunch of canned higher proof cocktails I think are really tasty.
Dunno if you have access to Cardinal brand canned cocktails, but that's my go-to canned cocktail and they're actually pretty damn good. Cardinal Spirits knows what they're doing.
My partner an I have found a great Bottled old-fashioned. Heublein 1792 Old Fashioned Cocktail, it is great for the camping cooler. Highly recommend it.
Liquor buyer here who has tasted most of these products. A lot of companies who make those bottled cocktails refer to their products as "ready-to-pour" rather than "ready-to-drink" and consider it an important distinction implying that ice is an intended component be it on rocks or served up.

4:32 I understand the possibility that Greg just had another bottle, but I also for some reason wouldn't be too surprised if Greg looked at the count of 12 cocktails, like on the picture and decided _yeah, that's enough for 6 glasses._
*edit:* _also, I kind of love the fact how Greg went from, I try out different cocktails, to him drunkenly make an add and back to him trying out cocktails totally sober._
Shame. I can buy Aperol, vermouth and gin for about £15 each and get 30+ Negroni's
I would love to see a Greg take on all the “freezer door” cocktails that have been going viral lately
The what now
If you're talking about what I think you are those fall under the "not a cocktail" umbrella.
While I generally do prefer mixing something myself, I am rather lazy and my friends and family tend to have a bad habit of making me the go-to bartender for get-togethers, so having some good premade options for people who aren’t into mixology is quite helpful. Plus, having a good number of ingredients or specialized bottles on-hand is expensive, so…it’s good stuff to know all-around, let’s say.
16:20 CORK REVIEW!!! BRING IT BACK, THIS WAS A REAL GOOD ONE
I'm a huge fan of the On The Rocks brand, they make a bottled Aviation cocktail that is 20% ABV and it's ~delicious~
"We're not doing anything that says seltzer. Except like half the ones we tried. And we added seltzer to some too" Lol great episode. As a person who finds even weak alcoholic drinks repulsive, I thoroughly enjoy this show in a way I have no explanation for.
Same, though it does make me wonder about making mixed drinks without the alcohol!
I like that he rates his premixed cocktails based on their utility as a weapon as well as flavour and convenience.
I don’t know if you’re welcome to it but seeing as how popular the matrix videos are, here are some ideas
Martini Matrix - Gin x Dry Vermouth
Split Rum Daiquiri Matrix - 1 oz. Rum A x 1 oz. Rum B
Sidecar Matrix - Cognac (maybe some other similar type brandy options) x Orange Liqueur
Gin & Tonic Matrix - Gin x Tonic
Negroni Matrix - Gin x Sweet Vermouth
Last Word - Gin x Green Chartreuse & substitutes. Could also do a video about green chartreuse substitutes in general
The Bacardi canned mojitos are actually pretty solid. You get the lime, mint and rum when you drink it. As far as premade cocktails go it’s definitely at the top. ABV is still low but it’s one of my favorites
I don’t drink, really ever but, I’m on an hour plus long marathon of HTD because Greg is just that much fun.
Those pre-made Jameson's are actually quite good, I find them perfect for when I want to have a drink while cooking so I don't have to waste time making another cocktail 😂
So expensive though
@@OneShot_GI found them for like 75% off and at that price it was perfect
In what universe does making another cocktail constitute wasting time!?!??! Somebody's got their priorities wrong.
@@halfsourlizard9319 Well presumably the priority is not burning everybody's burgers.
@@Aerowind Like I said: Priorities. Unburnt food is waaay lower priority than eliminating sobriety 🙄
Hey Greg, if your not familiar with Muckleyeye, they are in Colts Neck and make really good alcohol. The vodka and rye are outstanding.
I was just watching some of your old canned cocktail episodes, what a coincidence!
Not shilling for June Shine here, but I think their hard kombucha is amazing. Completely agree with you on the cocktails, though.
Glass Onion has ruined 'hard kombucha' for me, and it is now only read in Benoit Blanc's voice.
Best canned cocktail I ever had was Templeton Rye's mule, but It also helps that I bought it in the same state that the distillery and bottling company is in, so it wasn't sitting for long before I drank it.
The Copper Can brand of Moscow Mule served chilled is pretty good. Be sure to swirl or shake it up gently though to mix it up
I found out a cornershop next to me started selling le coq cocktails, and their cuba libre is quite good. You taste rum you taste coke, you taste lime, but separately, not mixed together. Still pretty good, great if you want just throw some in cooler and have during gaming session
Awesome video like your classics, love you guy's stuff ❤️
Just got to the Bacardi canned things and I have to share a story now
A few years back I was living in a city with extremely close access to warm beaches, so my go-to method of relaxation (at least every other weekend) was to go to the quietest stretch of beach I could find, alone, and just relax in the sun for a few hours, sometimes with a drink.
@3:57 A couple years ago I did batched Boulevardiers & French 75's for an office christmas party. Definitely TOO fun
Or did that idea not pan out?
simply has come out with a cocktail mix line, you should do an episode trying out their different mixers/recipes
LOVE that we still got a shoutout, even though we aren't available in you're local liquor store. We're growing FAST, so hopefully you'll be able to find us locally soon!
Want my new address? 😬
@@howtodrink You know it! Just sent an email your way. Happy to get you set up with a fresh batch of cocktails!
These are RTD's Ready to Drink. In New Zealand we used to have 12% cody's which was some ahorent whiskey and coke in a 250ml can. 4 pack and you are well on the way.
Mad respect for talking shit about June Shine. I have no opinion, but I just like to see shade being thrown.
I'm glad there are some good ones in here because I'm so tired of my family always buying the same things for casual drinking
Glad you were able to find us eventually. Hope you enjoyed them!
I would love to see Greg try some of Dogfish Head's canned and bottled cocktails. They definitely aren't widely available (just small region of the mid-atlantic coast) but if you plan on doing another episode like this in the future Dogfish Head is a solid choice for actual canned/bottled cocktails.
we get those all the way out here in michigan. i've had a couple and find them quite good.
I love a Cutwater Mai Tai with a splash of lime juice. I don't drink often enough to have a collection of bottles and cans give me what I want in most cases.
Before the intro I saw an ad of a guy eating nigiri with ketchup. Then you said, “it’s fine I just never want to see it again.” 🤣
@9:40 i like how the on screen notes changed "fuck your face"(which already had me laughing) to "rock me sexy jesus" which mad me laugh even harder
Really enjoyed this video
Mi Campo Reposado is decent tequila, my second favorite after Lunazul Reposado. Also, I love the huge bag of limes in the back there.
Do more Salt Point! I've tried their whole line and they have yet to disappoint.
I don't mind the jameson ginger/lime. I really like ginger and lime though, and my preferred drink tends to be sipping on scotch, so it's close enough to the things I like.
"What is that? Aspartaaaaaame? I f*cking hate that!"
Hahahahahaha! Had me rolling! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's always refreshing when you see some of the canned stuff you've already had. I've gotta remember that lime in the paloma from now on
It's something when traveling or somewhere you might not have a bar/cocktail making equipment.
I think the cans are too big, which makes them make the drinks too sweet. I'd prefer a less sweet, higher proof version in a baby can.
@@brad_wilson I can see that. Also some are much better than others.
I've found at the grocery store Chi-chi's Pina Colada wine cocktail. Serve over crushed ice and it's surprisingly good for $1.50
To summarize what we've learned put a lime in it
I'd love to see your reaction to the Malibu rum cans.
Enjoying this video while sipping on some Angel’s Envy. Perfect pairing imo
That Alca Chino looks sooo good, need to try it ASAP
It’s not bitter, it’s like… someone else’s chewed bubblegum? It’s real… bad
They all suck to me. Sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame K…
…none of them taste good (to me.) Even stevia, which is natural, has a weird bitterness most of the time that I really don’t enjoy.
Straightaway does some good canned cocktails, margarita is my go to.
Love the "Lost in Space" reference ! 17:54
4:23 - I have a lot of friends that did that with Tequila, because when you are young, of course Tequila is the liquor that gets abused.
In québec we have a brand called "shaker" and it taste pretty good. Sure its not the best but if you don't want to spend the whole party bartening.
Ive been eyeballing that Mi Campo mango mule for a couple of months at the grocery store, good to hear its good
I can't believe you haven't caught Tip Top in two rounds of this!
503 distilling(of your in Oregon) has some nice canned cocktails from like 9-14% ABV. Those get you where you need to be
i like the kraken and cola they sell bc i dont want a whole bottle of kraken, im never gonna drink that much, but sometimes i do want the occasional rum and coke and thats the best one ive found.
i also dont really enjoy the taste of alcohol, so i like that its pretty much all coke
Heirloom makes a couple phenomenal canned cocktails. A creme de flora collins and an alchermes spritz. Unique and made with real ingredients.
Pretty cool to see the companies getting a lot better at this stuff now
Greg, would love to know how you feel about Tip Top Cocktails! They are one of my favorites! They use real lime juice and real mixers.
I found some premade Cruzan cocktails, tried their classic Daquiri one it was decent, especially for a premade drink
Liquor buyer here who has tasted most of these products. A lot of companies who make those bottled cocktails refer to their products as "ready-to-pour" rather than "ready-to-drink" and consider it an important distinction implying that ice is an intended component be it on rocks or served up.
The salt point greyhound and cape cod are also good
