In this video I react to the life and mysterious death of Princess Diana. This is the first time I'm learning about her. She's such an iconic figure in British Royal history that I thought it was about time to discover who she was. I'm actually shocked to learn some of the revelations surrounding both Princess Diana's life and death that are discussed in this video.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

I would take this video with a massive grain of salt. For some reason they are presenting conspiracy theories as factual.
    Just as a few points:
There were no evidence that the seat belts were tampered with.
Unlawful Killing was never banned in the UK. It was just never certified, just as it was never released in the US. The publisher was afraid they would be taken to court for slander.
They had certainly not "outrun the paparazzi", considering the fact that Paparazzi had to phase court in France for taking pictures of Diana after the crash.
The argument that the people at the courts were "obligated" to side with the royal family is ridiculous. It's based on a massive misunderstanding of what the Kings Council (then the Queens Council) is.
Unlawful Killing is not a factual documentary. It's the ravings of a man who lost the son he loved.

I don't believe the driver was drunk. Driving very rich/aristocratic people was his job. I do not believe he would drink before driving very well-paying employers in central Parisian traffic at midnight on a Saturday night. Dodi Fayed's father *owned* the hotel he and Diana were in. Both Dodi and Diana were fitness fanatics. I believe that Dodi would have detected any alcohol on an intended driver's breath, and demanded another driver - after all, his father *owned* the hotel.

    Four facts about Diana:
1 She was the first celebrity to be photographed in the press shaking hands with an AIDS patient in hospital, while not wearing gloves. This was in, I think, 1983. People were paranoid about HIV-AIDS at the time - some people thought they might catch it from being in the same building as an HIV patient. She was also photographed holding and cuddling a baby with AIDS. This changed the whole attitude to AIDS patients in Britain.
2 She raised awareness about land-mines in war zones, and the law on their use was changed.
3 She spoke publicly about her own problems with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia). This was something that had never been spoken about so publicly before.
4 She raised the profile of British fashion designers by frequently wearing their creations - and she was extremely photogenic with a perfect figure.

No, Harry is definitely Charles' son. The red hair is from the Spencer family (Diana's family). The picture of her dancing in the black dress was taken at the White House when President Reagan was in situ. The man she was dancing with is John Travolta.
I really do not believe in the conspiracy theories surrounding Princess Diana's death. She was a very complicated person. She did a great deal of good by putting the spotlight on important causes, but she was emotionally unstable (mainly due to her painful upbringing) and had various affairs with married men. Her end was tragic, but I really do believe Henri Paul was drunk and caused the accident and if she had been wearing her seatbelt she would have survived. There was one survivor - her bodyguard - and he was the only person wearing a seatbelt (which kind of debunks the whole conspiracy theory that the seatbelts had been tampered with). This is my opinion only.

The rumour of James Hewitt being Harry's father was around way back because of certain similarities, mainly the ginger hair. However, red hair runs in Diana's family. One of her sisters had red hair, and one of his cousins on the Spencer side also has red hair. Harry definitely looks like King Charles and Prince Philip around the eyes.
There were conspiracy stories circulating about her death, which some people believed at the time. However, there was a full enquiry. The crash occurred as the vehicle being driven at high speed and she was not wearing a seatbelt. This video seems to be based purely on rumours and conspiracy theories which were around 20 years ago, rather than the facts we know today.

It was Diana’s decision to dispense with her official police protection. Mohamed El-Fayed should have been protecting her that night and failed abysmally.
The marriage should never have happened, they barely knew each other. They never stood a chance. The institution was responsible for the outcome.
Charles didn’t come out of it well and if he had been allowed to marry Camilla first time round, none of this would have happened. Diana’s death was a tragedy, but I don’t believe the conspiracy theories. She was treated badly but really they just didn’t know how to deal with her.
Charles and Camilla were meant to be together. Diana wasn’t perfect and should be allowed to rest in peace.

I think Whistler's script is a bit slanted. He often chooses the more sensational 'facts' (i.e. theories) over more boring ones. One of the things to remember is the Royal family have a policy of not Talking about things publicly to a certain point. Its a very British thing to present a united front and a public face. this of course is changing in recent years for the public. Part of the rationale for limiting who the Royals marry is that they think people brought up in the aristocracy would function better with the rules within the royal family.
In this same period of time we see the breakup of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson . Even as much as he said Royals can marry who they like, the likelihood that it would be a common non rich person is likely to be low as they are not likely to socialise with the lower classes

I think a lot at the end there was just conspiracy theories to be honest. Diana was a legend. She would take her sons at night to visit Aids patients in hospital, not in front of the cameras. And made sure they sometimes met people a lot worse off than themselves basically. It's why Harry is how he is. Unfortunately younger people these days don't know what she was actually like & a lot of older people seem to have forgotten what she went through & how much we were all gutted when she died. That is a truly awful video, with an entirely one sided account of the unhappy marriage and its reliability is shown by its omission of the fact that there was a survivor, her body guard, he was was the only one who was wearing his seat belt.
The marriage shouldn't have happened, Camilla was always the woman he loved, but he didn't want to get narried in his early twenties, and she being a little older than him, went elsewhere. But he needed to get get married for duties sake, and he picked someone who he had nothing in common with. It was miserable, but you should remember that the things she said about him shd her experiences were said during her separation and divorce, anyone who has heard how people talk about their partner at that time, will understand its not always the most balanced of accounts. She was also influenced by a BBC journalist who fed her lies about threats to her from Charles in order to get scoops. The notion that Diana was a threat either to the Government or the Royal family was ludicrous, any child she might of had would not affect the Royal Family at all, its religion would be irrelevant. There never was a motive.
She died in a foriegn country, outside the direct control of the UK security services. The car and driver belonged were provided by Dodi. The journey was not planned, they had gone back to where they were staying, it seems likely Henri Paul believed he had finished for the night and had a drink. Dodi and Diana decided however to go out again, perhaps Paul said nothing about drinking because he shouldn't have been. The drove at speed to get away from photographers, but the route was unplanned so the idea that cameras were turned off in that tunnell deliberately is plane silly. This was 1997, long before computer controlled cctv. The diver momentarily lost control while driving at speed, that is it.

On another note in a way she kind of left the people to look out for her sons, because she went public about how bad her marriage was I think if the public, here and abroad, had even got a hint either of them was being forced into loveless marriages there would of been a backlash on the royal family.

I’d take this man’s vlog with not a pinch, more like a tablespoon of salt. Ridiculous conspiracy theories, I loved Diana for her kindness and empathy but she did, like all of us have flaws, so does King Charles but you should research all the things he has done for young people and charity. After the marriage broke down I blamed camilla for years but in hindsight I think initially Charles did try to make the marriage work but he and Diana were just incompatible and he was eventually able to marry the true love of his life.

This video you've watched is an overall snippet and summary of her life and royal married life basically. It includes all the major points though.
The main thing was she was loved by the people, the people saw her as the 'People's princess' because at the time, a lot of her charitable causes was reaching out to the working man and the sick and needy or taboo subjects that were not typically known of what the members of the royal family would do. So she knocked down barriers between monarchy and public because of her kind intentions. But this actually went against her with the royal family and their beliefs. An iconic thing She did was shaking hands and touching people with an aids to break down the stigma which a big deal at the time.. The Royal family found her difficult for not complying to royal traditions. But the public found she was less cold and warm hearted. She did a lot for the minority groups in society like LGBT, poverty, homeless, addictions, mental health. All this again was not what the royal family was as appropriate at the time.
There was a lot of pressure on Charles to find a bride and she fitted all the criteria, age, aristocracy etc... But it didn't work out like that, which is how there marriage deteriorated both had separate affairs...She became more famous and was all over the media in newspapers all the time, ecspecially beacuse of her Royal position and because of her personal and public life with Charles and the family.
Alot of the public could sympathise with her in her royal role and thats why her funeral was such a huge event in 1997 the whole of the nation and the world was in mourning because of the way she died and it made people question it with conspiracy theories that you've already seen...
I would recommend you trying to view Diana's Panorama Interview with Martin Bashir a British journalist in 1995 It was a very out of the ordinary public interview to the Royal family at the time, they classified it as washing dirty laundry In public but she was expressing her own point of view. That contributed to Charles divorcing Diana. Everything she did was opposed to the Royal families traditions... The public knew that Diana was not Charles actual love and that Camilla was. He couldn't marry Camilla at the time because of her age/ divorce status.
I would also recommend you learning about her relationship with mother Teresa, Elton John and celebrities like John Travolta and Michael Jackson x

The queen married the man she loved, but she prevented her sister Margaret from marrying the man she loved because he was a divorcee, Charles always wanted to marry Camilla, but she wasn't 'pure' enough, Charles was sent away on a long trip abroad and she married someone else, who had been dating his sister Anne. Had Diana worn a seat belt she would most likely have been ok.

I am not a fan of Charles at all, and I really loved Diana, I was alive and lived through it all. But the theme of this video is off and there's a lot that seems to be influencing this revisionist take on what happened. Every single one of Diana's post-divorce relationships were with men that the press ALWAYS referred to as Playboys, as all rich young men with yachts and planes and champagne lifestyles were. The vast majority of press headlines with Dodi were "So In Love" and "Happiness At Last". Dodi's Father has attempted to make reason out of why his Son died and it's understandable, but the driver he employed at his Hotel in Paris did drive into a concrete pillar in that tunnel. There were 4 people in the car, her private bodyguard wore the seatbelt and lived. You don't knock somebody off in a car accident, as most people walk away from them unhurt. You crash a plane or sink a boat.

Diana was a lovely person., but did have mental health problems. When Charles married Diana he finished his affair with Camilla. He found Diana’s moods difficult to cope with, and was not very supported of her. Diana was the first to have an affair, and went on to have many more. Indeed with married men destroying their marriages. The Queen stepped in and ordered them to divorce. Diana craved attention and on the night of the accident the paparazzi were told when they would leave. One man survived. He was wearing a seatbelt. She did do a lot of good and had a kind heart.

What you'll possibly not realise, Steve, is that members of royal and aristocratic families were traditionally expected to marry someone of their own rank. Hence a prince was expected to marry a princess - either from a foreign royal family or a distant branch of their own royal family - although there were instances of first cousins marrying in the past, when no others were available. Hence, King Edward VII (as Prince of Wales) married a Danish Princess; King George V (as Duke of York, as his elder brother the Prince of Wales, had died at the age of 28), married a Princess of Teck - actually the same one as his late brother, the Prince of Wales, had also been engaged to! (The Teck family were descendants of one of the youngest sons of King George III, but not through the slightly older son, who was the father of Queen Victoria. With the exception of this princess, who had since become Queen Consort; they lost their princely titles when King George V changed the rules in 1917, and their family names was also changed from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the more English-sounding Cambridge). George VI married a commoner as Duke of York, but this wasn't seen as much of a problem because he was never expected to become King, and Elizabeth II married a Greek prince! There were however no suitable non-Catholic princesses in Europe at the time who were of a similar age to Charles, and so at length he was allowed to marry Diana, as she was of a lower rank. In an ideal world he may have married Camilla in the first place, but her family wasn't even noble and so, she was deemed unsuitable.

Conspiracy theories will never go away, no matter how ridiculous they are. Diana was a very manipulative person adept at getting her own way (watch for the coy glances - making sure she was getting the adoration she craved). Charles was much maligned when, basically, he was edged in to a marriage he did not want (Camilla was always his first love). Anecdotes from school friends frequently revealed Diana's true character. The biography of her life frequently pointed to the fact that she was unprepared for 'royal life' and all that it entailed. I find that very hard to believe when she was bought up in the royal circle and spent much time at Sandringham before she ever got involved with Charles. Unfortunately, Harry is very much a mirror image of his mother, heavily influenced and lead by a wife who is just as good as an actress as Diana was.

I agree with Simon below, a huge amount of salt. The major point against it not being an accident is the driver would have had to be in on it and he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Diana had a lot of emotional baggage going into the relationship and yes the family could have supported her better. But she made a lot of very bad choices. The one fact you cannot deny is she was a very warm hearted person. She would literally run towards the boys regardless of who was watching if she had been away. She was the first 'celebrity' to shake the hand and sit with gay men dying of AIDS. Personally I think that if she had gone on to marry Dodi. She would have said 'to hell with you lot, your my past' and would have left it there as it was obvious she was truely happy with him and he with her.

There is so much propaganda about Diana because she died young and pretty. Especially the breakup of her marriage to King Charles. She admitted having affairs first, had numerous affairs throughout the marriage including with married men. She worked with the press including setting up paparazzi shots of her, and with her children, to paint herself as the perfect parent when compared to Charles when the truth was far more complex. She died because she chose to give up her security, against advice, and then got into a car driven by a drunk driver and wasn't wearing her seatbelt.
She's been posthumously made into a saint because she died young and pretty so it's almost taboo to speak about who she really was and the hurt that she caused to other people.

I agree with many of the commenters. Be careful about accepting this. One of the main reasons for the death was that the Queen had withdrawn the royal security from Diana after her divorce. The Fayed security wasn't as good, and Mohamed al-Fayed was very autocratic. I've heard the story that, to avoid the paparazzi, there was a last-minute change of plan. Henri Paul - who was not sober - was ordered to drive a car, which may well have been pursued by the paparazzi. ( The security guard in the front seat survived, but has no recollection.) Comments by close family suggest that this is the story that they believe. This is why Harry gets so upset at not having Royal security.
At her funeral, her brother, now Earl Spencer, gave a brilliant eulogy. He praised her - but also acknowledged her faults. She was no saint. ( I have met him. She was brought up at first in Park Cottage, but when her father inherited the title, they went back to the magnificent family home, Althorpe House in Northamptonshire. I met the current Earl Spencer there; he was signing copies of a book he wrote on Prince Rupert. He is a very good historian.)
The considerable public support for her at her death was due to the public's (correct) belief that she'd been used. They wouldn't let Charles marry Camilla, so - for the sake of the succession - she was married off to provide the necessary "heir and a spare ".

The Wales' marriage should never have happened. Charles should have been allowed to marry the woman he loved, but outdated tradition forbade it. Anyone who suggests that the marriage's failure was a shared responsibility is vilified by those who insist that the late Princess was a saint without stain. In reality, the entire relationship was doomed from Day One.
