I've had trouble with the US mail just flat out stealing a package, and yes it was coins. The last known location was at the distribution center in Montgomery, Alabama, and from there it just went missing. I was talking to a lady on the phone from the claims department about it and I insinuated that a postal employee at that center probably stole it and she agreed. She said that she sees it all the time and that's the only thing it could be. Even your envelope looks like it was torn by a person and not something mechanical. I HATE a thief, I hate them. I think I am going to report it to the state postal inspector and the FBI. I wish everyone would report it because obviously there is a theft problem now and there didn't use to be, not like this, as I've heard many friends and family complain about the same thing.
I hear you about PO thefts. In dealing with a probate I had TWO CERTIFIED mailings disappear from the SAME distribution center in TX. Only thing it could be was some employee taking them thinking they might contain big checks. How on earth do they lose CERTIFIED mail? It caused filing deadlines to be missed and caused the Estate several thousand dollars. The PO never even bothered to investigate AFIK...
