This is a brilliant presentation by an iconic industry veteran. We need more of these discussions by like individuals who know what they're talking about! Thank you!

Great presentation. Re. everything affecting the sound, to be clear, some of these differences may only be clear to those with much more 'conditioned/trained' ears, that from attentive listening over many years have become much more aware of nuances. So those inclined to audiophilia, may want to ask themselves how deep they want to go into this process, because it can bring great emotional rewards, but also predispose the more sensitive listener to becoming more perfectionistic in their pursuit.

Funny that the sound is out of phase, for a lecture with a mastering engineer no less.
    Lovely talk though, thank you!

Lee Michaels is amazing. Runs a very successful shrimp restaurant around LA (I think he and his family have a few locations now). He's a helluva piano player, singer and songwriter. Classic triple-threat musician who retired at the height of his popularity.

Seems to be a polarity issue with the audio (anyone listening in mono might be struggling). The irony....

As a boom op, I feel sorry for this person having to be in the shot and go between the audience and Bernie. Holding a mic at the end on a pole for an hour is cruel and unusual. Great content though.

Slightly rude audience listening to the best mastering engineer in the world. I'm a big fan of Bernie, and would really have enjoyed this presentation. Glad it was put on video. I believe it's the digital sound itself that makes people unconsciously disassociate with the music. Analog is more than the packaging and ritual, it sounds better.

@@recordmanjohn I‘m not talking exceptionally high res! This is not the thing …it’s about really good external or (like in my case four internal) DAC‘s in the CD-player. But anyway…everybody to its liking!

I'd put it down to passive listening (most often with digital) vs *active* listening (vinyl), rather than the tech itself. Objectively, vinyl is also "lossy", with many more potential distortions, mostly on the playback end.

Always fascinating and enlightening to listen to Bernie. He has a lifetime of expertise and knowledge to share. Interesting to hear him tell it straight- the main reason so many have recently switched to vinyl- for superior audiophile integrity of sound- has become a victim of its own success. From its niche position as an audiophile exclusive product it has grown in popularity with the masses, most of whom are listening on junk equipment. This of course requires serious compromise on the audio quality to allow albums to play on the cheap equipment. Cutting corners, sacrificing quality and keeping overheads down yet still promoting the luxury lifestyle brand and ripping folks off milking them for all its worth. Nothing changes. I'm amazed at how dirty new albums are in comparison with the heyday of vinyl- why are people willing to put up with this poor service for a premium product?
