Starting to look good. Even the old airfix kits can become gems in the hands of fixers like you, Phil!

thanks! a lot of these older kits can be made with a bit of tweaking and fettling, its a part of model building I do enjoy

Nice to see B-17 coming along. I took mine out and started doing it section by section. Fuselage is as good as it gets, one wing almost complete.
    P. S. That main landing gear has 2 pins, when it's all glued together you have to push it aside gently to be able to close it up or open it back down.
Cheers and good rest of the week to all modelers out there ✈️

absolutely! in the first video of this build I have this same kit I built back in the early 90's, and on that one the undercarriage works exactly as you describe, and its how I realised that you should be able to get them to work this way.

Nice work so far on what isn't an easy kit to put together in places. Takes me back to when I built one (not very well) back in 1978/9. Took me five weeks to save the pocket money to buy the kit and a couple of tins of Airfix enamel and a tube of glue. It was soon flying air support to my Airfix HO/OO soldiers and probably ended up crashing at some point. I've got the same 70s issue of the B-17 in the stash now and often think about tackling it as a nostalgia build. I'll tag along for the rest of the action!

Great. We're resurecting old kits, as you said, Phils b-17 took me back to my childhood. I got mine in early 90s, never got to finish it. It doesn't need to be pretiest built out there, but sure as hell was effort for 10 year old to obtain. I own it nice shelf place

you've just described my childhood to a T! although i wasn't too great at saving my pocket money up, a kit like this would be a birthday or Christmas present.

thing is, the ones that do that are the most satisfying kits to get finished!

Hi. Those old Airfix kits were and are a challenge to get respectable. I have this aircraft in a box with a few other 'classic 'gems like the Stirling,Halifax,Lancaster, wellington to name but a few. I was on a bomber theme at the time. So mine are all nearly finshed, just need to put the wings on and do a little touch up here and there and then their done. There was always a problem wit those fuselage joins, its the old mouldings. No matter how much you try you will always end up doing a load of sanding and re-scribing. The P.V.A. problem is that it shrinks as it dries so you always end up with concave windows, stick to the clearfix. My model of 'A bit o lace' will have to wait a while before its finall finished but you are making good progress. Maybe next time buy the new moulded version. I can't wait to see the the version of the Liberator in the flesh, it can't be worse than the old one. And yes I have built that to. Good luck.

I have been working on an old tool Halifax that I had already built, but has been stripped down, and disassembled with oven cleaner, then I've started to re build it, I'll probably make some videos about that when the fortress is finished. the PVA windows seem to have gone a little cloudy, so they will be replaced with clearfix later on. I did build the old liberator many years ago, ended up painting it white, because the box art made it look white rather than silver, and i don't think i looked too closely at the paint instructions!

Always fun. It is a handsome aircraft. Unlike the British Sterling.

funny you should say that, I've always thought that the Stirling was how the British would have built a B 17!
