  • A look at the 1970’s Kepone Crisis in Hopewell and how this pesticide chemical affected employees of the closed down manufacturer and even closed the James River to fishing for several years. We visit a researcher from Ohio who spent years analyzing this huge event that was one of the first illegal dumping and toxic chemicals by a manufacturer that caused an investigation by the EPA which closed this factory run by former Allied employees.
We talk with a former employee who says he suffered for a long time and may still suffer from being exposed to the harmful kepone dust.
We also talk with a Belgium filmmaker who came to Hopewell, VA to shoot interviews for a documentary he’s doing in France - where many people on French islands where Kepone was also used on banana plants could be affecting their food, fish and lives.
Watch Virginia Currents on VPM Thurs. at 8pm & Sat. 5:30pm

This is where my Mom was born and raised, where I was born and raised and where my daughters were born.
Any wonder why both of my daughters developed autoimmune conditions which ultimately killed them (ages 23 and 32)? And that since the death of my older daughter in 2005, I was subsequently stricken with autoimmune RA, ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogrens Syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, etc?

I've lived in Hopewell all my life and I'm 59 now.. And that man is not wrong about the smell of Hopewell.. when I leave her for a week or 2 and then come back man does it smell bad here.. it's extremely hard to describe the smell And when people move here from far off locations they always say, what is that smell? Hopewell..
