I’m a petroleum engineer with a BSC and MSC degrees in petroleum engineering. I started with 92k 11 years ago right after the crisis in 2008 and currently making close to 200k per year. Keep in mind that many chemical engineers are working as petroleum engineers but many companies will pay more for the petroleum engineering background (degree). In my case I make 20% from what my colleagues with chemical engineering degrees do. PS Thank you all for your messages. Didn't expect that. I have tried to answer most of your questions. Yea this is true. Petroleum engineers can work in chemical engineering fields. I’m doing my masters now and some of my colleagues I graduated with are working for airbus and other companies. Petroleum engineering isn’t just limited to oil and gas. There are different fields you can work and my supervisor from uni told me this as well.
Petroleum Engineer here, and this video is a little off from my experience on US pay, particularly working for Operators (Exxon, Shell, etc.) and not Service Companies (Schlumberger, Halliburton). If your on the Operator side expect to be paid 100k starting, 200-300 by 40, and 300+ 40 and up. I myself am 30 and I make 250k working at a supermajor. If you work on the service company side, expect to be paid 20%+ less then your Operator peers on average. The video is very accurate on boom & bust employment, as the service company side is highly volatile (aka slash and burn fast) given the downturns over the last 7 years while the Operator side can (not always) be more stable, but it depends on the company your at, but still expect there to be some layoffs. Expect to work on oil towns & cities where Operators have offices.

@@emperor___palpatine Operator (Oil Company) make the investment and own the asset/wells on the land where you are drilling/completing/workover/intervention. They work with there service companies/vendors to contract out all the work to drill/complete/workover/etc. the asset. Oil companies make the money, service companies do the work (make less money, but not as much).

Young ones, don't choose this career. The oil & gas industry is so fucking fluctuating. You can have a job if the oil prices are high, but if not, it's very probable that you get fired. Remember that the most important resource that you have it's your time, use it wisely.

Currently in my 2nd year of petroleum engineering and I've to say I do regret doing these particular engineering majors ( because job market is horrible (especially after COVID ) ) , so if you are someone who is getting enrolled in engineering prefer doing mech or chemical as your bachelor degree . I'm looking for internship opportunities and It is crazy hard to get one ( and I've a decent pointer 9.04/10 )
I think there is some error because petroleum engineering concentrates on drilling and reservoir not extraction and chemical processes such as treatment and refining which are chemical engineering.
The skill set that comes with the degree is vastly different depending on where you study. Missouri S&T Vs. Texas A&M Vs. Colorado School of Mines etc. A lot of companies hire only from certain colleges.

Colorado is more focused on the geology aspect of petroleum engineering, Missouri s&t is more focused on the physics and mathematical side. I’d imagine a&m is based more on the applications of these two aspects. I do know a&m has insane amounts of funding from petroleum companies (due to their proximity to in state headquarters and other reasons) creating much more resources available to their department. If I went for graduate or post graduate degrees, a&m is undoubtedly where I would go. Hope that helps!

This is also the reason the graduation rate is ~60%. Where as Colorado and Texas are ~80%. As a company, these are things you think about when you have multiple applicants for a job opening. Who is best fit, who is more knowledgeable in certain areas, and what areas are required for this job. Generally a dedicated STEM school with heavy math and physics fundamentals goes farther in the engineering field for internships and/or first time job seeker.

I'm a petroleum engineer by practice and degree and what he said about getting a degree in either chemical or mechanical engineering to work in the oil and gas industry is apt. That will give you so much more flexibility career wise. Petroleum engineering is a very streamlined programme hence the core skill set is quite limiting if your aren't working in the industry. I wish I had someone to advice me in that regard before embarking on this journey, although I don't regret it too much cause I got lucky. Cheers.

Petroleum engineer from US. Experienced Shale boom and burst and now pandemic. If you choose to go in very specialized field of petroleum engineering such as reservoir engineering, you need PhD with computational research. Otherwise, you will be victim of at least one lay-off. All drilling, production, field engineers and some reservoir analysts/engineers get laid off at least once in their career. It becomes almost impossible to get new job if you get laid of in late 40s and 50s. So career can be very short....so be careful when you select it based on salary

Electric companies are basically just trying to take a monopoly over petro and coal. You can't charge an EV without oil or coal producing the electricity.
If anyone aiming for the service companies (slb, haliburton, baker, etc..) Please consider studying electrical engineering where it is most recommended. Field engineers are most likely to deal with electrical components such as logging tools.
I worked for Oil Company, my boss have Petroleum Engineer degree and master degree as well. And yet his salary is around 600 USD /month. And since he is a Sales/Marketing, his bonus around 1000-10,000 USD/Year. So yeah, depends on your company, if its like BP, Shell or so, you would prbbly get bigger salary even if you just an Admin.

Electric companies are basically just trying to take a monopoly over petro and coal. You can't charge an EV without oil or coal producing the electricity.

Please consider studying electrical engineering where it is most recommended. Field engineers are most likely to deal with electrical components such as logging tools.

I worked for Oil Company, my boss have Petroleum Engineer degree and master degree as well. And yet his salary is around 600 USD /month.
And since he is a Sales/Marketing, his bonus around 1000-10,000 USD/Year. So yeah, depends on your company, if its like BP, Shell or so, you would prbbly get bigger salary even if you just an Admin.
