- Welcome back to Pop Dissected! Today, we’re going to be talking about Nicki Minaj’s fourth studio record, “Queen” and seeing what led to so many people saying she was “over” and a “flop” once this record released.
Also, I realize Nicki is a rap artist, not a pop artist! I'm using "pop" as a general umbrella term for not only true female pop artists, but for POPular female artists as well!

The reason Queen was not successful was due to beef, management issues, and radioes boycotting her

It wasn’t a failure, either.
The beef had a MAJOR impact, the whole world was anticipating her album before it was released to compare it to cardi, and at the time before she released it the media made it just friendly competition between two female rappers. But then nicki took it over board by constantly mentioning cardi in intenervies and that's when it turned in to real beef, people were defo more focus on the beef than Nicki's music. She did her self no favours there.

What you forgot to mention was how her lack of radio play influenced how she charted. Because NO radio stations played her music as much as other artists who don't appear to be flopping. Also Taylor Swift speaks her mind just as much as Nicki, but because Nicki is black she gets depicted as "the angry black woman" while Taylor gets praised.

Nicki is not everyones cup of tea. That´s for sure. Love or hate her but she is very successful woman. She is the queen anyways songs for example "Superbase", "Anaconda" and much more... R S No radio radio station hosts blatantly did not play her music, and said they were not going to play her music. People in media have a lot of power on these celeb lives, by one person saying that he’s not playing Nicki anymore led a domino effect. Today radio play is important because the more and more you hear a song you’ll be inclined to go and play it. Radio play also counts for a alot of streaming as well

Note: I mistakenly said "Anaconda" was the lead single off "The Pinkprint", when it was actually "Pills N Potions". Another great point many have brought up is the Nicki v. Cardi B feud, and Nicki's lack of radio support. Lastly - Nicki being ignored by radio stations and have little to no airplay. Those are three crucial points that were overlooked. Those tickets were not selling and her tour mate dropped out as a result. He did not want his brand associated with something that he deemed as a failure. She even replaced him with Juice World. That did not work either. Here is what I do know. There was no reason Nicki had to cancel that tour due to her false excuse of not having enough time for rehearsal. Queen supposedly had been done in 2017, if I am going to go by what Nicki stated initially. Then later when she took her online hiatus, it was all due to her still working on an album that she claimed she had finished already and then it still was pushed back. She went back in and changed songs up because she saw how those three singles that she released in February of 2017 were received. It was all after that “Shether” record. That affected her and her music wasn’t being embraced the same anymore. That is also when the staying power of her singles started to fall off. One week the song goes up then the next week it drops drastically. As an ex-fan I was also turned off by her antics in the media. She used every excuse in the book as to why Queen was number 2, including coming for a whole baby?!!..C’mon now?! It seems that you also turned a blind eye to the fact that Nicki did the very thing that she was mad at Travis for doing!!(Bundles). So as an ex-fan I think she fell off when she stopped focusing on her music and stayed in the media for mess and bs. There is not one single song on Queen that even compares to “Lookin Ass Ni**a” not 1!...but go awf...

I liked Queen... still streaming it. I think everything you said was true. I also believe the emergence of Cardi B is an alternative to Nicki was a factor. The industry didn't have to act like they liked her anymore, and many people began to attack her or try to ignore her success. I've literally watched Everyday struggle praise a artist for selling 30k in their first week but say Nicki is washed... like that makes no sense.
Yeah, that's a great point! I wish I had covered Cardi in this video. At the time, and even now; her emergence created a rivalry between her and Nicki and A LOT of people sided with Cardi and put Nicki down. Even with that, Nicki has succeeded so much when other artist - new or old - are not at their peak anymore or selling well. I think Nicki was 100% prevailed through all this crap she was put through.

Her fifth era (fifth album) is set to be her biggest era of her career. She went through the "fourth album curse" with QUEEN. It is said that before the queen she released throughout 2016-18 she scrapped about 2 albums one was supposedly a more pop/rap album while the second was a trap/hiphop/island pop type album. After the sheather beef she scrapped the album and went with a different sound.. i feel like she should have stayed with the original sound. Her management wern't doing what they were supposed to do which is why she recently fired them and is now with Irving Azoff aka: Travis Scott's manager. Queen was an album to show her lyrical power the album wasn't really focused on being on the charts at all.

@@mariushenderson3894 True, the fourth album can be an artist's worse album (commercially) but solidify their legacy. Nicki's album Queen solidified her legacy but it will go down as her most overlooked/underrated album. The fifth album will possibly be her most successful album.
I think the problem was
1. Nicki released barbie tingz and chun li together even the videos, this led to partition of streams. If she had released only chun-li, it would have been in top 5 easily.
2. bed was good but weak, it would have been better if she had released Good Form or Barbie Tingz next.
Great points! Releasing 2 songs side by side can have some unintentional negative impacts, as they compete against each other honestly.

The funniest thing is that she still ended up being the most paid female rapper of that year which “some people” (who are gonna remain nameless) felt the need to complain about since they tried to blacklist her.

Nah, Nicki had 10 songs chart on Billboard from Queen, it was #1 in 86 countries, it was the fastest album to go number #1 for a female rapper in 2018 on iTunes. It went platinum despite being blackballed by Dj Envy who lead the charge for other Djs to blackball her singles, so without radio air play, her singles would not stay on BBH100, so let’s not be disingenuous. Nicki’s tour sold out in almost every venue including Manchester which held 22k. Her fans posted videos of the shows & they were packed. Queen did not flop.
She didn’t defend 69. She just didn’t judge him on his past. Why didn’t ppl keep this energy with Offset, 50, Tory Lanez, Kanye & everyone else who collab with 69? It’s hypocritical to hold her to such a high standard & not the men who collab, too. Just sayin🤷🏾♀️

Y’all barbz are manipulative af. First of all Queen was number 1 in 86 countries on iTunes and not album charts. Itunes means nothing in the streaming era cause people barely buy on iTunes anymore! So thats not really an achievement to be proud of lol. That explained the low album sales overall. Compared to Cardi who got way more streams.
And her Tour was a flop! Period! We all know she cut off the american leg due to poor ticket sales.
In Europe there was not one show sold out!!! Not one. In Berlin the top row was covered with black curtains to hide the unfilled seats. Same in Munich. Also her cancelled show in bratislava shows covered up seats with black foil. In Cologne the top row was completely empty as u can see on videos.
People were chanting Cardi B after a cancelled shows in France and Ireland.
So stop acting like she sold out almost every show in europe when there is many proof otherwise here on youtube.
Jeani Nae Pure sales > streams. Nicki has 285M WW sales of that 109 are pure sales. Nicki sold out out 97% of her tour which included Manchester 22k seats. Cardi could not sell out El Paso Tx arena which holds 11k she only sold 3k, so go prop up that mediocre non-writing bird elsewhere. Her last 4 features flopped. So don’t compare Nicki to Cardi who can’t sell out stadiums in America nor has she had 1 tour. Queen is a 4th studio album. IOP is a debut so stop comparing where you can’t compete. Nicki’s debut album sold 375k pure sales 1st week. 8M pure sales US. It’s still the best selling debut album amongst female rappers & artist this decade. Cardi’s IOP has 257k pure sales with almost 2 years. Holler at me when Cardi has headlined 4 successful tours & has 4 platinum albums. 109M pure sales. She’s flopping in her 3 year.
3 canceled shows due to fault of hers. 2 venue could not power her stage or JuiceWrld’s stage. Ireland had a storm and their equipment was stuck on ferry that wasn’t allowed to leave dock due to bad weather. There was 10 people chanting Cardi outside the venue and inside the venue was about 5 people chanting. So Who cares🤷🏾♀️ Cardi has not 1 tour🤡🤡🤡
Nicki is one of the best rapper she’s so talented and versatile plus there is no-one unlike her. She’s not everyone’s cup of tea. She should experiment more with popular sounds she’d kill everyone if she starts doing popular sounds and ride trends like other artists. I think she has a lot of yes men’s around her.

Great video, another reason why her singles didn’t stay on Billboard longer was the fact that radio was legit black balling her & it impacts their charts too much. I’ve seen songs not be in the top 200 of apple music, Spotify, itunes, but be top 15 on billboard strictly off of radio airplay.

Pop Dissected yeah, I honestly think they need to revamp the radio airplay impact on the charts. Lizzo song Good as Hell is #3 on the hot 100, not even top 200 apple (I couldnt find it) barely top 100 on spotify I think & #10 on itunes. Music video only getting like 200k views a day. Not pointing her out specifically but I noticed I havent seen her streams going up but the song keep going up on the hot 100. So songs with way more streams and purchases can still be charting way lower if radio doesnt play them over and over
Right it’s all in the radio play . Just like Lizzo truth’s hurt song it was released in 2017 . How it get to number 1 in 2019. The radio played it over and over but I personal think the record label paid the radio station
Tallboy 257 Radio play does impact the Billboard Charts. If you want to look at a chart that only goes by streams and video views, the Rolling Stone Charts is available. Lizzo is on both charts but not in the Top 10(Neither is Chris Brown or Lewis Capaldi and others)on RS chart because now it’s been taken over by Christmas music. Also I think it messed up how Lizzo is being thrown in this “payola” narrative when Truth Hurts was an organic hit. All of the evidence points to this being the case. 1) Lizzo and Atlantic we’re pushing her single “Juice” HARD the beginning of this year, if you look at her interviews and performances before her album was released they were focused on working that song. 2) they had even released a video for her title track Cuz I Love You and started to perform that. 3)in the midst of that Truth Hurts was used in the movie something great and the streams on that song jumped 350% the next week according to Billboard 4)Even after that they STILL performed Juice at the MTV TV and Movie Awards but they couldn’t ignore how Truth Hurts was streaming so they redirected energies from Juice and Cuz I Love You to Truth Hurts, they would’ve been foolish not to. If “payola” was being used, why not use it on Juice or the second single??? Why not use it on Tempo the 3rd single she released in the summertime?? It’s obvious that Nicki’s team had no interest in working hard to make this album iconic - one-day tracking releases, music videos coming out way too late, no radio support (although she’s been blackballed from radio so that’s not entirely her fault), and basically giving up once the album was released. It’s no wonder she fired her entire team after it’s embarrassing rollout 🤦♀️

Oh, very interesting! I've always been so interested in Taylor's ability to sell so many records. "1989' was released at the beginning of the streaming era and had amazing sales. And even "Lover", being released in a streaming era had a ton of pure sales. "reputation" got an advantage as it wasn't available on streaming services for the first week of release. But nonetheless, she's always been a pure sales giant. That's a great topic, I'll look into it more!

The problem was that Nicki was trying to get on with the trends of the time instead of being 100% authentic self. It was a mistake that she didn't have more songs like Ganja Burn (because that song does sound timeless) and that she collaborated with....that. But she can pull herself through it.
I agree! I think, as I mentioned in the video, a lot of people didn't seeing Nicki as being truly authentic across the record even though she implied the record would be just that.

I don’t think she was teasing Queen album in 2016, her fourth album was supposed to come with the documentary, all of which changed in 2017. I think she had to create a new album after shether which became what we know as Queen.

I feel like for both Queen, Witness, and Artpop, all of these album are hyped up so much by the singer, but the album didn’t live up to the expectations. Even tho it didn’t actually flop, it looks like that.
And especially all these album faced with competition that the public has pitted against, as Artpop lose out to katy Perry’s prism, Witness lose out to Taylor Swift’s reputation, and Queen fall short to Cardi B’s invasion of privacy. As people directly compare these albums, it seems to them that the one which underperformed, flopped. It looks like that they are “dethroned” from their previous career high, and that mindset is actually letting people to overlook the success of that era in the artist’s career.
Very great points! If any artist ever underperforms in comparison to a previous era of theirs, people are so quick to overlook all their successes and deem them as a failure. I mean...ridiculous.

People are more aware of what’s out there and not just what’s on TH-cam vevo and the radio. Nowadays you can name at least 10 female rappers with rainbow hair whereas in 2012... Lil Kim... Very true! Streaming has really changed the industry, and now we have more artists who do "the same thing" as bigger artists who are able to have bigger platforms because of the connectedness of social media.
*tbh for me her self-titled album is an actual Rap album. every single track was rap and no Pop song included unlike the other albums that she made. majority of her listeners came for Pop sound and it lacks of it so they disappointed but not me.
