Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobe...
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

I live in Texas. I had a neighbor kid who had this game and I borrowed it from him. I just remember a crisp autumn bite in what is normally a harsh air as my window was open switching between characters and understanding a deeper type of a gameplay as I was young and just understanding things. Moments like that and current moments are all what makes life great.

This really is a fun game, and it's weird that it's seldom mentioned as a genuine NES classic despite being released close to the peak of the system's popularity.
I have very little attachment to GI Joe: Real American Hero an an IP, but from what I have seen of the cartoon it was pretty much perfect material to adapt into an NES action platformer or run 'n gun game. And this is one of the rare non-Konami or Capcom licenses where the developer gave us a game that really perfectly matches the IP. I don't think it's quite the S-tier game that Castlevania, Contra, Super C or the best NES Mega Man games are. It sits somewhere between A and B tier, which in a library as stacked with quality titles as the NES makes it a really solid game.

Yo James! Found your channel trying to do a bit of research. 15 years ago I came home from work and my wife gave me a white plastic grocery bag full of nes games she found at a garage sale . And This game (G.I. Joe) was in there. But it gets better! Im just speechless having a nostalgia trip.. G.I. Joe! .. Nintendo! .. Video game Rentals! .. I seen on your top shelf you have some plastic cases. That's what this is, well that size anyhow with a covering..but the video store took the original box and cut it to fit the case. So it has the front, back , and side. And its been in there all safe and protected since the day thay made it. And it has the manual!! I never held something that made me just sit and stare at it , it's so much of my childhood all in one.... it's the trifecta :) I still just look at it and wonder what it's story is? I almost sold it once but the guy was just looking at the value and not the whole picture of how special it is... he wanted to erase the stores name off the cart! oh what I was trying to find information about is the video store.. (Premier Video) it's like they got this game ready to rent but closed their doors? But in all my years I've never seen another complete nes rental have you? Anyhow great channel.... Thank's Mother Brother :)

I've been playing G.I.joe my whole life, in fact this was my first ever video game 30 years ago.
I can tell you you are olaying it wrong hahaha, don't waste your bullets on the common enemies, be more tactical, there are a couple of bosses that you can kill with granades. You have to fill one guy up all the way, first Duke (you are forced to by the game) and then you'll see the game is not that hard, I used to get stuck with Metal Head because I didn't realize the joes level up (first game ever remember)
For the levels you need to explere the maps and learn the layouts of them not the bombs placements thet way you'll be sure to check everywhere and dont miss a thing.
Sorry for the long post hahaha I really love this game, maybe I'll do an episode in the future

I know you probably meant "Never released outside North America" to primarily focus on "not released in Japan, surprisingly", but instead my mind went to the UK. There, where patriotic exclusively US heroes might not do so well, they rebranded the toy line as Action Force, with different character names, modified likenesses and entirely different plots, with their own continuity of comic books.
A few years after the release of the cartoon in NA, the decision to keep their stuff entirely different or switch over for easy conversion resulted in minor edits to the cartoon and some attempts to explain to the European audience why the team was now fighting Cobra instead of Baron Ironblood of the Red Shadows. It was a bit of a tragic story, coinciding with the death of one of the UK company's owners, the licensing agreement expiring, and the toy factories shutting down.
The changeover happened in 1985 though, so by 1991 European kids should've been familiar enough with the slightly modified GI Joe main story enough for a PAL localization to be easy. Nowhere near as involved as the Contra/Probotector conversion.

I was never a big fan of GI Joe as it always gave me that military indoctrination vibe as a kid and I was way more interested in classic TMNT series anyway. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Atlantis Factor as a kid and eventually played this first Real American Hero version via emulation and it's a fantastic licensed game among many on the NES. But like you said the cryptic maze BS in the bomb planting levels can be exhausting and really takes away from an otherwise perfect game. Even though there's a password and continue system it's almost pointless at the later levels trying to rebuild and catch up from a fresh start which is a must in attempting to complete this game which I've never done but gotten close many times. 😄
