I allowed people to scare me into not riding for 20 years. I am 40 years old and passed the MSF (messed up the u-turn box by 1/2 inch) buying my bike in the next month or so. Going with a z650, but probably sit on a sv650 and couple of cruisers like the Eliminator and vulcan S/rebel 1100 (not the DCT) But if you are in your twenties and want to ride, don't let people scare you into not riding.

Same here, but more just didn’t think I could do be that guy. I’ve always wanted to ride. I’m 42 and got my license last summer. I got a ninja 650r 06. I too im taking my time and really soaking in info to be the safest rider I can be.. so far I def see myself on a mt 09 or z1000 some day. Ride safe out there!

I started on a 636 too. I don’t regret it. You just have to come with the right mindset and not trying to gun it. Ease into it. Throttle control is very important.

I pretty much agree with the entire video. My first bike was a 600 too. Yes, it’s powerful, but it’s realistically not too much to handle. Also, I too came from a manual car background so I had a total understanding of manual shifting, clutch, etc… when I got a bike for the first time ever, it all came naturally to me and only took about 20 minutes to settle in. ANY bike can be trouble if you’re not careful and too hasty, from a 250 all the way to a 1000. The biggest point is just being humble and recognizing your own skill level. Don’t ride like a bat out of hell, going 100mph everywhere zooming between cars… hell, I don’t even recommend lane splitting, even if it’s legal in your state… not because I don’t like it, but because when you’re beginning on a bike, it’s good to be adventurous because that’s how you learn, but you should NOT be taking unnecessary risks at low skill levels. Keyword, “unnecessary”… generally just trust your gut.. if you feel a bit too afraid to try something out on your bike, then just curb it until later when you’ve mastered other riding skills first. Also when you’re learning, buy proper riding gear. Having the right gear on that will actually protect you, will help inspire confidence on the bike and will make it that much easier to learn.

You were right at the end, I saved this video and subscribed becauce I related to it, so much so that I don't think I've realted to a video on motorcycling ever before!:D
I have made the commitment starting this year to start saving up for my first bike, a 650cc bike, the Honda CB650R. And while almost everyone (none of them riders) say that it's a reckless move and "will die on it" I'm very comfident for the reasons you mentioned.
I too am a very calm and collected person, even when it comes to high stress situations. Also I'm turning 30 this year so I'm not a hot headed teenager who wants to feel the speed at all times. Like going fast and being reckless gives me no hype whatsoever. I just want a bike that's competent enough to handle the motion of traffic on all roads, even highways. And even though I wouldn't mind starting on 125 cc then go for a 300cc then to a 600cc it's just too expensive for me. Selling in order to upgrade is a pain in the ass not to mention that a 1 year old bike is worth far less than a brand new one. So simply put I just can't afford to climb the ladder.
My yearly! salary here in Hungary is just about 12k$ so I literally have to make every sacrifice in order to own my dream bike by next year's summer. But what makes this decision easy is that I too am a long-commitment type of guy. Like I want to buy this bike and I know it will probbaly be my one and only bike ever. I have no desire to have more power than what a 650cc can offer and it's so beautiful that I don't think I'll ever want a bike more that that, and that inline 4 enginge is just pure symphony!:D
Thank you for voicing your thoughts! This gave me even more confidence that I should stick to this plan of mine of going for a 600cc as a beginner!:) By the way I too am a manual shift driver and I have never thought of that as such a big advantage but I guess a lot of people in the US never even tried manual shifting before. I guess that's why you made it your point.

At the end of the day, the cliche “ride your own ride” thing is sort of true. No one can tell you what’s best to start on. Back in the day, all you could do was start on a 600cc and all of those people are okay lol. So I hope you get something you love!

The best and only reason I’d suggest starting on a 600 is you get the power needed to get out situations that happen quicker. But for around town or highway riding 1ks are where it’s at.. 6s you have to ring the neck to get into your powerband to do kinda average speeds of the highways. Which is something I grew to not like starting on 600.

R7 is plenty of bike and probably too much for most anyone straight out of the MSF which is basically a course to weed out people who can't walk and chew gum. A 600 race replica is not a compromise. 600rr is one of the fastest machines(car, motorcycle or whatever) on earth. Learn on something you won't mind asphalt surfing with first.

600s tend to be more compfy and definitely lighter, if i upgraded my r3 id go with a 600, insurance is also cheaper.
But personally i love my r3 bought it new in 2022 and its my first bike and now i have over 10k miles on it, never felt i needed more power other than on a freeway with head wind, definitely fine for canyon twisties more power would just be for bragging

i think people should start on dirt bikes with some trail riding to be honest. that way they gain experience being on two wheels and get better reflexes, clutch control, and used to the bike getting a little loose on you.

The difference between a 600 supersport and an older literbike is decimals. Facebook marketplace tells the story of how most these bikes end up. A 600 race replica has always been one of the fastest most dangerous bikes money can buy and deceptively fast. Humans are rationalizing machines so I expect you to talk yourself into the faster machine. A 600 is just a better package compared to a 400 as well but that's the point of a learner bike. Dropping or mistreating a 400 is less of a burden on yourself while you get to know the ins and outs of motorcycling and make up your mind what the sport means to you. You may find standard nakeds, hyper nakeds, adventure bikes, super moto, dirt bikes or whatever to be interesting after a while. An older SV 650 is an awesome middle ground, reliable and plenty fast. I own one I restored from junk and it's a cool little bike with plenty of power for most days. I also own a 400 and 1000 naked bike but have been thinking about getting an aprilia rs660 next. The middleweight race replicas are good at what they do which is minimize weight and smoothly transfer a lot of power to the ground in a super efficient package and once you get past wanting fastest top speeds or 1/4 mile times anything approaching 100 horsepower in a lightweight chassis is more than enough for assing around.

you dont need a quickshifter lol you can in fact shift up gears with no clutch take practice but you can do it fast i did it on my 125cc lolz let off throttle and go up gear back on throttle has to be smooth no before anyone tries you cant downshift this way use your clutch but going up gears it faster without using clutch it a good skill to learn clutchless shift when you buy a new bike and it dont come with quickshifter you have this skill.

Yes! I actually did end up learning this, but just completely ignored it since I’m always using my quick shifter. Maybe I should turn it off and just grow that skill more. Like you said, it could be useful!

Right, right. I just meant more like trying to compare a middle class cc bike to a middle class car. Your first car doesn’t have to be something like a miata where it’s underpowered, can learn to drive in that car, then buy something faster. You can start in a faster car more in the middle class of power and just not drive fast. You just have more risk of danger because you CAN go faster if you wanted to.
These bikes are shockingly fast asf regardless lmaoooo
