Had a great time sharing stories from the road passing songs back and forth when came round to visit Abby's. Made a new friend that gave me some good advice and let me play his extraordinary national guitars for longer than I probably should have 😅
Had a great time and I can't wait to run into him again.
This is an old folk/blues tune that was popularized by Lead Belly but evolved from an enslaved folks working tune. It was collected by Howard Odum in 1926. The particular way I play the song is greatly influenced by both Appalachian folk music and country blues music. This mixed with Jason's excellent heavy driving slide blues guitar playing and Abby's immaculate old-time and folk spoon playing gives this a pretty complex sound. All three of us take influence from different, similar and the same places. In general though, this is just a blues song.
