hey Fil - love your stuff and the joy & respect you have for musicians. and you always appreciate Rory. so here is one of my favourite memories of Rory. back in early 90’s I saw Rory play at the Bataclan (i think) in Paris on his Fresh Evidence tour. smallish crowd in fact, Rory came out all gun’s blazin with his « harder » rock blues to get the crowd going, then suddenly the electricity went out - completely - legend has it Rory blew all the fuses when he turned up his Strat. Rory took it in his stride. he grabbed his acoustic (Martin?) sat on the edge of stage and invited the audience to move closer and shut up - and he almost played a full set « camp fire style » before eventually the lights came back up. fabulous artist. still miss him. cheers fil
Oh Lord Fil of Henley, this is one of the bravest things you’ve ever done! When I was a young warthog, my rock trio attempted quite a few Rory songs - Railway and Gun, Used to Be, Bought and Sold, I wonder Who, Hands Off, Tattooed Lady and others. Even when he was barely in his 20s, he was so many light years ahead of me - and most people - that my feeble efforts were more of an attempt to alert (then) a fairly indifferent world to St Rory of Gallagher. The nearest we ever got was “Follow Me,” but by Top Priority, RG was so world-class that I gave up!!🤣🤣 The first time I saw Rory in 1968, he began his set with Taste (almost completely known), he said, “We’d like to play a little tune here by Buddy Guy that I hope you’ll like, First Time I met the Blues, hope you like it, thanks very much,” and then struck a straight D major 2nd-fret D, and off he went.... as it was almost illegal in the Blues Fraternity to play anything other than a 9th or double-7th, this in itself was unusual. Eric Kitteringham and Norman Damery weren’t the best players, but the song just lifted the roof with his extraordinary harmonies, semi-tone Celtic runs and Coltraney riffs, some of which you mention here. Jimi had played the night before and had one of his badly “off” nights. The barely-billed Taste didn’t - the entire crowd was gasping with disbelief. The next 37 times I saw him play were all just as good: I’m not sure if he ever played a “bad” gig. Fil, perhaps a few folk who hear this will realise just what a musician was RG. Thank you very much.😁
I was lucky enough to see Rory in Schaumburg Illinois , around 1979 or 1980. We took my Ford Pinto and four guys from Michigan City. I still do not know how we got home. Great show. Rory was indeed one of the greatest. I still listen to him.

I had never heard of Rory Gallagher until I saw him open for Deep Purple in 1973. He blew the lid off the place. Was so good we booed Fleetwood Mac off the stage and demanded he come back out for another encore. To be fair this was the low point of FM with Bob Welsh and minus the late great Danny Kirwin, so they being in between Rory and Deep Purple just didn't work for the audience. All these years later I’ve “ found” him on TH-cam…wow what a guitarist..even his singi..some of his playing and singing sound like Hendrix. The sounds he gets out of his guitar are phenomenal. I’d go as far as to say he’s my favourite along with Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen and Hendrix.
Great analysis Fil. Really liking your demonstration/explanation approach to these guitar masters, especially where you are not allowed to show actual performances. Please don't decry your efforts in trying to show us how it's done. The best example of Rory playing, entertaining and connecting with his audience has got to be his live appearance at Montreux 1979 "Shadow Play". Brilliant rhythm section. Rory on fire. Just stunning! You can't help but smile. Well worth a look. Thanks again Fil. Stay safe and well.
Named my first son after Rory! Great video and so well explained, those pre bends tormented the beejeesus out of me in the 70s when all we had was the record and trying to keep repeating a passage by dropping the needle constantly and trying quickly to replicate what Rory was doing and rinse/repeat...and still screw it up! 🤣 Thanks for the memory ❤️
From what I’ve read of hm, Rory started off listening to a lot of country blues, and playing acoustic, before graduating to his famous Strat. That may be why his stuff always sounded like it was in a direct line going back to the Delta. He wasn’t the fastest or showiest, but he sure was the bluesiest. He gave the term “black Irish” new meaning. And for my money he was just as good on acoustic. Check out the Leadbelly tune “Out on the Western Plain.” He plays it in a vaguely Bert Jansch style, even better than Jansch could. I worked my way through school tending bar in O’Connell’s Pub, one of St. Louis’ most famous literary bars. One night Rory and the boys came in after a gig, and parked themselves at the bar. Rory downed four Guinness and Powers boilermakers, and he could still walk a straight line. That takes practice. And a word of warning. Don’t ever get a bunch of Irishmen talking about politics after they’ve had a few. You’ll never shut them up. Rock on!

Rory remains my all time fave. If you ever have a chance to check out his "I could have had religion" from the Beat Club sessions, you will be taken to church. Oh, he plays the entire song, simultaneously trying to tune his guitar. Epic.
Rory Gallagher was one of my favorite guitarists and inspiration since I first heard of him back in the 60's. One thing however, I never heard anyone pronounce his last name with a silent "g". Is this a thing? It's always been Gal-lah-gurr as far as any of us old rockers know.
Fil ,you can literally fill in for anyone. Who would be your “ Dream Stand In “ ? If you could choose. That’s almost an impossible choice isn’t it lol.
I'm a fan of Rory Gallagher. He is a very unique guitarist from Ireland. Rory is a multi-instrumental talent, and singer/songwriter. Even guitarists like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page admire Rory Gallagher. In fact, when Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher was the first consideration as a replacement. Rory Gallagher declined. Rory Gallagher was also considered as a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Rory Gallagher again declined. Roger Glover, the bassist for Deep Purple, did produce some of Rory Gallagher's music. Thanks for sharing this great analysis video. May Rory Gallagher rest in peace. Cheers, Fil!
Did you know that Hendrix was interviewed and asked..” what’s it like being considered the world’s best guitarist.”… Hendrix replied..” you better ask Rory Gallagher “.
Rory rarely played the same thing twice - so if you learn a solo off his record, it would be unlikely you see him play that same thing live. I liked that a lot about Rory :)
Exactly that's what a lot of people liked him for, he could play any of his songs on electric, acoustic, mandolin or whatever he was a musical genius..👍🎸😎
He was a analogic player, what makes him a MONSTER, because it's way more difficult, but your class is realy realy helpful man! God bless you, thanks a lot!
Saved! To play like Rory it takes a certain controlled aggression and lots of controlled energy once you got that techinical. A kind of supreme confidence due to experience. The man performed a whole lot for a long time. Performing is the key really. You know? Hes my favorite performer. He was best live where as Bob Dylan was a master in the studio….. my two favorites of all my time. I do have others! I LOVE a great performamce! Who doesnt ha ha?
FIL, you can't be a self-respected player/teacher/god with less than 8 strats behind you! Rory's music contains so much energy, texture, brilliance and the hightest level of musicianship I've ever heard anywhere that not even the passing of half a century can dull its impact - nothing like him before or since, he's a stand-alone, the STONEHENGE of Rock! He didn't just play the guitar, he made love to it - and his Strat obviously loved him back!
It was nice to hear you pronounce Rory’s surname correctly, with the second “g” being silent. That is the correct pronunciation of this ancient Irish name. Most people that speak with an English accent insert a second “hard g”, pronouncing it as if it were a phonetic sound in the English language.

Always super interesting and informative videos. Saw Rory at the Taste farewell concert in the Ulster Hall in Belfast, so I’m old but still a fan!!
Well done! 🖤🤘🏽
This is a great video for learning.
I've been a Rory fan since the 70s, and you sound pretty damn close, Fil.
Thanks!
It's definitely a silent 'G' 🙂
It's an Irish thing...☘️
@@wingsofpegasus Yes, similar to tagliatelli - silent 'G'...
Fil ,you can literally fill in for anyone. Who would be your “ Dream Stand In “ ? If you could choose. That’s almost an impossible choice isn’t it lol.
Brilliant stuff from Phil here finding all the little bits Rory does
I'm a fan of Rory Gallagher.
Well said, Dwayne! ☘️
Wow a man who can pronounce Rory's name correctly..thank you !!!
I was thinking the same. Literally the only non Irish person to pronounce Gallagher correctly. 😚
Silent second G in Gallagher.
Did you know that Hendrix was interviewed and asked..” what’s it like being considered the world’s best guitarist.”… Hendrix replied..” you better ask Rory Gallagher “.
Nice analysis. Keep them up!
You know I love this,,, Thanks so much...
Great artist♥️
Rory rarely played the same thing twice - so if you learn a solo off his record, it would be unlikely you see him play that same thing live. I liked that a lot about Rory :)
Exactly that's what a lot of people liked him for, he could play any of his songs on electric, acoustic, mandolin or whatever he was a musical genius..👍🎸😎
Thank you
Love this , great version.👍
Kudos to Fil for doing a good job at analyzing and playing like one of the best ever - Rory Gallagher!
Thanks!
Rory we love you forever ☘☘☘
Athens Greece 1981💙🇬🇷🎸🎸🎸🎤🎤🎤
Totally underestimated star of the start, an absolute genius, decent human being and kind man
Great Song❤
Very cool thanks 👍👍✌🤘
Fil.
You have a genius at explaining music.
Get into Bullfrog Blues or Crest of A Wave.
PS: Oops. Please Fil.
Nah he picked a belting track already.

Allegedly when asked how does it feel to be the world's greatest guitarist, Hendrix replied " I dunno. Ask Rory Gallagher"
It was nice to hear you pronounce Rory’s surname correctly, with the second “g” being silent. That is the correct pronunciation of this ancient Irish name. Most people that speak with an English accent insert a second “hard g”, pronouncing it as if it were a phonetic sound in the English language.
We saw rory b4 a rush concert 198-sumtin..he was high energy for his 30 minute gig. I should sue him for hearing loss.
BRAVO❤❤❤❤your video is amazing❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Trying to play like Rory Gallagher is an honourable quest despite complications after all its Rory Gallagher
Thanks alot for this video, I try to play with the rory albums and videos but something was missing. The pre bending just connected the dots
Thanks ! ROCK💯🎸
