Absolutely loved this video. 40K has been a huge part of my life since 2nd edition and I appreciate this trip down memory lane. I would love something similar to this but with factions and how their rules changed throughout the years (might be a bit of an undertaking but if there is anyone that can get it done, I know it’s you bosses).
This is really cool. I never realized that the first edition was essentially a scaled up D&D combat and focused on smaller battles. It makes a lot of sense that it didnt start out with such big battles in mind.
When you say 'Overwatch was introduced in 6th' don't you mean 'Overwatch was REintroduced in 6th & it was now applied on the charge instead of being declared in your own turn to prevent or funnel enemy movement, like it was in 2nd'

It's good that the game is less complicated today, but I still think firing arcs from weapons attached to vehicles is a good idea, It's very strange that I can place my tank behind a building and shoot things out of its rear end.
Great video! As only came into 40K in 9th it’s always fun to learn about past editions. Perhaps you could do a review of each boxes in terms of the models/content and theme of them? And give some views on what would be good in the future.
This is great! I was out of the game from 3rd till 9th so its great to see how each eddition was in the time I missed. What would be cool is an individual video on each eddition, delving deeper in to the rules and maybe following each editions video with a battle report (I understand just how much work that would entail but a guy can dream 😅)

As a side note... In 2ED the sustained fire dice was specified as having the sides of 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, & Jam. However, when asked at a Q&A as to why the average roll for a sustained dice was so low Gav Thorpe- in claiming the average was 2- accidentally revealed that GW staff at WHW were accidentally using a different version of Sustained Fire die to the rest of the UK! There's had two 3s, and only a single 1. Meanwhile, some gamers from the continent (Italy I think) brought out the dice that they had gotten in their box sets (with matching numbers in the translated rule book I believe) which had a single 2 and three 1s. The look of realisation on Gav's face, who had just hinted at the coming 3rd Edition, looked to me to indicate he had a whole lot of writing to do asap for some things scheduled to head to the printer's soon! I believe this is why so many of the Index weapon profiles said things like 'as a Bolter, except...' or similar- a massively rushed deadline after the realisation that every reference to sustained fire had to be stripped out.
Thank you, enjoyed that. Played Rogue trader through to 8th, so apart from being old enough to know better, that was an entertaining journey through different times of my life. More nostalgia flashbacks please.
Fantastic video. I played heavy from 2nd through 4th, then got interested again through Kill Team near the end of 9th, and jumped back in full-force with the launch of 10th. It is an absolute delight to see both what I loved (and didn't love so much) about editions, as well as get a good overview of the editions I missed, and how the game evolved over time. A series dedicated to even more in-depth looks at previous editions would be absolutely brilliant... and with the quality and passion I've come to expect from Tabletop Tactics, would probably be held in great regard for years - if not decades - to come as a definitive history of the game.
Man this brings back some nostalgia, mainly for crazy rules I forgot we used to deal with. Superbly done Chef. I miss deep striking BA land raiders........😅

I started in 2nd Edition but the dramatic change to 3rd actually stopped me playing for a couple of editions due to the perceived ‘dumbing’ down (it felt like the life and rich detail got sucked from the game to me)…Then we had the ‘dark days’ of GW’s draconian anti-customer/player era for the middle editions and I didn’t actually start collecting again until 8th Edition (albeit having studied and observed every edition) when GW Community actually reached out to players again… It’s been an interesting ride! 😅

This was genuinely great; I got into the game in 2002, and it was cool to reflect on the progression of the game inthe intevening years (as well as see how RT and 2E worked!).
The best vehicle rules were those that had the perspex overlay target sight which you placed over diagrams of the relevant models you were targeting. Definitely the most fun and accurate vehicle combat system I played.
Excellent video! Really enjoyed couldn’t believe Chef was not going to mention the infamous rhino rush of 3rd edition so caught me off guard mentioning it during the 4th rules changes! Thanks for this content!
having gotten into 40k in mid 9th edition I've always been fascinated by the games history and it's many little charms, I'd also totally watch a similar video about codexs and other similar topics
Remember the rogue trader days, played through to 3rd and started up again in late 5th, stopped in 7th and switched to 30k, now getting back to 40k in 10th
Great video! I'd also like to see a history of the armies over time. I have tried to introduce when certain armies, subfactions or characters were introduced, but it's almost impossible as most articles on the "history" of Warhammer 40k are about the lore history.

Having recently perused my copy of Cities of Death (2006) I couldn't help but notice how the charts in that book are calling 3 ruins claustrophobic and a reasonable number of terrain pieces to use in a game, and how that have changed radically when looking at 9th/10th, maybe a deep dive on just how the terrain and boards of 40k have changed over the years would make for an interesting deep dive? Especially with the brief highlights in this video on how line of sight and cover (with screening) have changed over the years?
Brilliant summary! I started the hobby shortly after 2nd was released and it dominated my teen years. I was appalled by 3rd, never played it and gave up the hobby. I tried to restart in 8th, shortly before 9th, but am only finishing my army (GSC) now to start in 10th hopefully. My rules memory of 2nd is still quite fresh, so there will be quite a leap from 2nd to 10th. Looking forwar to tho!
Watching the 3rd edition recap really reminds me why 40K feels so long to play now compared to then. Units were mostly moving OR shooting, not both, which basically halves the interaction with models during the game, you’re either moving the models or rolling shooting dice. Now in the modern versions of the game you’re always moving models and rolling shooting attacks. I used to play lots of turns in 3rd Ed, even massive games would rock on past turn 6 just because the game was getting quicker as units died. These days it’s a struggle to get 5 turns in an evening, though 10th is a huge improvement compared to 9th in that regard.

6th edition was great and should have gone on for much longer. The allies chart needs to be brought back as it allowed armies to have "Lore" units that still don't have table top units, (Converting Tau Terminators to represent Xv46 battlesuits, using the Tactical marine squad as Squats etc)
Very enjoyable! I was about 3 years into fantasy battle when rogue trader launched. Among my group of friends (all of us about 12 years old) marines were the "joke" option because they were plastic, not "proper" metal models. How times have changed 😂
I never got the elitism about metal models. It's simply an inferior material in terms of modelling ease and paintjob durability. Only thing it has going for it is the heft in your hand, which I can kinda get, but you can just glue washers under your base if you're so hung up about it... Then again, I never got the 'book smell' argument regarding ebook readers so what do I know...
@@toferkrz946 true, but 30 plus years ago, plastic models were legitimately terrible... To be fair, met ones weren't much better lol. These days, I'd hate to have to work with metal, it's such a miserable material to work with. I don't even like designing minis for metal, I was glad when my work switched to plastic minis as the process is much nicer from an engineering pipeline.
2nd edition is still my favourite and as many people have said I dropped off for a few editions with the launch of 3rd as I felt it took out all the stuff I enjoyed. Having fun with 10th and it’s a very different game not only in terms of the rules but also the sheer number of models on the battlefield. Remember in 2nd when you were lucky to have 3 squads of marines and maybe a couple of characters because the points costs where so much higher.
Excellent video both in terms of content and in the quality of the editing. I'd very interessted in a sort of post "mortem" regarding what previous edition were trying to achieve, failing or succeeding ( not in terms of mechanic but in terms of game design, whats feelings they generated that sort of things). And obviously the same video but applied to the old world would be extremly cool ( but i guess not the target audience) Cheers and thank you for the great work
the thing about edition reviews is that they're very much based on the meta or perceived meta at the time. Whereas some gamers just enjoyed certain editions because they offered something the previous one lacked or overlooked. Overall, I'm impressed by the rules set crafting throughout the years that managed to appeal to and sustain hobby gamers coming back for more and more. Every edition has its good points. When the rules got too bloated, they were culled and then that alienated the players who liked the crunch. Then the rules were too simplistic and players wanted more and more for their armies. Look at the return of The Old World: Goes to show that gamer's didn't mind the hit and wound tables and all those extra rules. Again, not for everyone - and certainly not for new gamers to the hobby, but each edition has it's audience. And which edition you liked the most was probably dependant on what army you were running at the time and what the community was raging on about as to where it stacked in the tier listing of that edition.
I played back in 3rd edition, and started watching channels like this one in 8th but haven't played any games since 3rd. From watching games it feels like the newer editions might be better for gameplay. But I feel 3rd edition had a lot of "flavor" where it felt like simulating a battle through things like vehicle armor values, blast/flamer templates, and how Weapon Skill worked in melee combat.
I started in 3rd played thru 6 then took a break till 9. I sometimes forget about facing and glancing hits when playing modern, and how they don’t exist anymore, hell I sometimes forget I don’t need templates anymore lol. 5th was my golden age, simple enough to understand was kinda the final build of the original game
Loved this....would like to see a How to play 2nd Ed video as this was when I started as a 12 year old, but cant for the life of me remember the rules. I just remember Terminators rolled 2D6 for saves!

Love this! ❤ What a passion project of a video. Started playing in the later days of 1st Edition I can really appreciate the amount of work you put in to get all this together. All editions have had their great concept but also issues. Nowadays often wrapped up in a cozy cloud of nostalgia. 😅 For what it’s worth I actually believe 10th edition rules is the best version yet. Initial balance issues? Sure. But the game it self is better than ever. Great gaming days ahead! 🎉

I'd kind of overlooked I started in 4th edition, never mind having been collecting for around 15 years.

If you're into casual 40k these bosses are the best in the business and release a ton of content for their on demand subscription. Def worth it.

I don't even like designing minis for metal, I was glad when my work switched to plastic minis as the process is much nicer from an engineering pipeline.

2nd edition is still my favourite and as many people have said I dropped off for a few editions with the launch of 3rd as I felt it took out all the stuff I enjoyed. Having fun with 10th and it’s a very different game not only in terms of the rules but also the sheer number of models on the battlefield. Remember in 2nd when you were lucky to have 3 squads of marines and maybe a couple of characters because the points costs where so much higher.

Excellent video both in terms of content and in the quality of the editing. I'd very interessted in a sort of post "mortem" regarding what previous edition were trying to achieve, failing or succeeding ( not in terms of mechanic but in terms of game design, whats feelings they generated that sort of things). And obviously the same video but applied to the old world would be extremly cool ( but i guess not the target audience)

Bit of a bummer that nothing about 10th is being mentioned.
the thing about edition reviews is that they're very much based on the meta or perceived meta at the time. Whereas some gamers just enjoyed certain editions because they offered something the previous one lacked or overlooked. Overall, I'm impressed by the rules set crafting throughout the years that managed to appeal to and sustain hobby gamers coming back for more and more. Every edition has its good points. When the rules got too bloated, they were culled and then that alienated the players who liked the crunch. Then the rules were too simplistic and players wanted more and more for their armies. Look at the return of The Old World: Goes to show that gamer's didn't mind the hit and wound tables and all those extra rules. Again, not for everyone - and certainly not for new gamers to the hobby, but each edition has it's audience. And which edition you liked the most was probably dependant on what army you were running at the time and what the community was raging on about as to where it stacked in the tier listing of that edition.
I'd like to hear more about how the lore has changed throughout the years.
Any plans to play through the editions? Give each edition a go, and see how they compare in the playing.

I played back in 3rd edition, and started watching channels like this one in 8th but haven't played any games since 3rd. From watching games it feels like the newer editions might be better for gameplay. But I feel 3rd edition had a lot of "flavor" where it felt like simulating a battle through things like vehicle armor values, blast/flamer templates, and how Weapon Skill worked in melee combat.
I started in 3rd played thru 6 then took a break till 9. I sometimes forget about facing and glancing hits when playing modern, and how they don’t exist anymore, hell I sometimes forget I don’t need templates anymore lol. 5th was my golden age, simple enough to understand was kinda the final build of the original game
Loved this....would like to see a How to play 2nd Ed video as this was when I started as a 12 year old, but cant for the life of me remember the rules. I just remember Terminators rolled 2D6 for saves!

4th was my introduction to 40k. Still like it and miss it a little. Probably should give Heresy a go.

All editions have had their great concept but also issues. Nowadays often wrapped up in a cozy cloud of nostalgia. 😅
For what it’s worth I actually believe 10th edition rules is the best version yet. Initial balance issues? Sure. But the game it self is better than ever. Great gaming days ahead! 🎉
