Thank you for the hard work and knowledge you put into your videos. I have gardened for years, but always spent the extra money buying from the store. This will be my first real year of starting my own seeds thanks to your videos. Have a family of 6, and need all the money savings we can get! Love gardening and love the easy setup you have showed. Thank you!
Congrats on your first year of seed starting. And you can also do this when its warm for plants through the summer. Outdoor seed starting. No lights. Let me know if you have questions. I am going to plant mine November 1st. So I will count back 8 to nine weeks for seed starts and begin the process nine weeks earlier than that by putting them in the fridge. Thanks Gary ..now I know what cells to buy from your store. As you know we gardeners have to think ahead ...sometimes way ahead to planting dates. Good luck on your artichokes can't wait to see them develop . It's funny because CaliKim is in a perfect part of the country to grow them. I think 90 percent of our crop comes from California.

It helps but it doesnt mean they won't germinate without doing it and sometimes the seeds you buy ended up in cold places and the process already happened. I was able to find the Roman Artichoke seeds and have them now for fall planting. I have spent more than a few Saturdays researching how to grow them in Florida. It's going to be a challenge. We don't have the "chill hours". But some Florida University growing studies have been successful using Gibberellic acid to mimic chill hours. Please keep us posted on your artichokes. I at your web store now and hoping the Large and Deeper cells are the right ones to buy.
I have mine in those. They work. If you do you have time to refrigerate? Anyway... some should still germinate if you just plant them. Hi, Gary! It's me again. You'll probably hear from me a lot on your various videos. 😆 Question about Stratifying Celery Seeds. I only just received the celery seeds yesterday. Should I plant them now or put them in the refrigerator for a month? If I put them in the refrigerator today the 19th of January will they be okay to plant Feb 19th and then picked 120 days from that date? Best, Natalie
I would plant some. They still germinate. Sometimes the seeds you get often sit where it is cold and they are stratified anyway. Some arent. Stratify the rest. Awesome video! Just curious what variety of artichoke you are growing. Most cooler zones sell the green globe which is not super great for cold winters. I grow the imperial star and the Colorado star (cross of the imperial star) and those varieties you can trick into first year budding with vernalization. Curious on the variety and if you've had success overwintering in zone 7. Thanks again!
This variety is like 50 50 making it through are winters. So I seed start. I am just not actually familiar with the 2 you listed and will look into it. I'm growing Imperial Star in NJ zone 7 ... I was attempting to overwinter some green globe, hoping they produce this second year. Unfortunately I had a very 'helpful' mother 'surprise' me with some garden work while I was dealing with torn ligaments in my knee...She not only pulled out my dead cucumber vines and tomato plant skeletons, she yanked ALL of my artichokes 😭😭 She's been warned for this year... And her fig tree has been threatened! 😂 So I don't find success with green globe in zone 7 for multiple reasons!

Celery is an aromatic just like onions, leeks and garlic. Works great to help bring flavor out for stews, soups and many other dishes. I find sometimes when bottom watering I have to mist the top of the soil to help with the capillary action the soaks the water from below.
Have you tried covering seed pre-germination with cling wrap to reduce drying out? Once germinated, remove the plastic. This is helpful for all seed but especially for seed planted uncovered and those that need light to germinate.

Hi Gary. I am going to give artichokes a try this year. Missed the timing for cold stratification, but will just try to get some going anyway. Since they are in seed starting mix, when do you begin to fertilize them? what fertilizer do you use and how often do you fertilize? Thanks!
They still germinated. Stratification just helps. Good luck Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden shop for your fabric pots, fall & spring seeds, seed starting supplies, peppermint oil, neem oil, TRG merchandise and more at www.therustedgarden.com Check out my new gardening PODCAST Gardening Coast2Coast at gardeningcoast2coast.net with CaliKim.
I’m a little behind and have not yet done the stratification. Would it be possible to put the seeds in the freezer for a week or two and then move them to the refrigerator for a week? This year I really wanted to try and grow both of these but am a bit behind. I’m looking forward to all of your upcoming videos and another successful growing season!! Thanks for another great video!! p.s. Enjoyed the last cooking video you put out!!
I dont know about the freezer. In theory yes. You dont have to stratify, it just helps. And sometimes seed packs sat in cold while being shipped around and the process was already done. Thank you so much. I am happy, yet sad. I did not know that celery or artichokes needed to be cold stratified. I think it is too late for me to start these seeds in zone 6b but I will know better and try again next year.

I have searched for information on how to plant artichoke and celery seeds for several days. I finally gave up on getting the info and planted my artichoke seeds this morning. I did NOT stratify my seeds. Luckily I have watched your videos about seed starting many times so I did everything else right. We will see what happens. I will be planting celery tomorrow. How many hours do I need to keep my lights on? Looking forward to updates that I can follow along with. I would be lost without you!! Thanks for all you do!
Stratifying helps but not always needed. It should work out fine. So general guide line 14-16 hours own and 8-10 off. Since I start so many seeds types this tend works best for various needs. Thanks for posting this video! Artichokes are my favorite vege, but I was raised on them. I've got an Imperial Star artichoke plant overwintering outside under blanket protection. I got a late start on it last year, and it only got to about half the size I think it would mature to. I'm hoping to see artichokes on it this year. I've got some seeds in the freezer (not the fridge, I hope that's not going to be a problem!) and I think I'll go ahead and get them started indoors now. Thanks for the reminder!

I like to try new and different, hardy food perennials. If I had more land I'd definitely have a permaculture garden. So I grew Colorado Red Star Artichoke for 3 years. I'd get harvestable heads the first year but I always let them go to flower. They're breath takingly beautiful. This variety looks gorgeous long before it blooms. It attracts the big giant black bumble bees. The only warning I have is they are a bit spikey but that's another draw for me. I found myself touching them all the time. I'd continue to grow them if I had space but I don't. This will be my first year without them and I miss them already. Oh and these are extra hardy.
I am letting mine bloom too. They are that nice. I've found artichoke seeds do well with flutuating daily day-night temps like 70f-50f. The exact division of hours isn't important 8-16, 12-12, 16-8, whatever is convenient. I prime all of my seeds with a mini-stratification of 2-3 days of cool before going to normal germination temp. Seeds naturally vary in water absorption speed so some will get into active germination before others if dry seeds are planted straight into ideal sprouting temps. Water absorption is not strongly affected by temperature but enzymes and cell growth is strongly effected. The cool priming period allows them to all acheive complete hydration without much enzyme and cell activation, so when they do get warmed up none of them has a head start and I get fast, even, vigerous germination. This also minimizes time needed in the warm humid environment and so limits growth potential of disease. Total time is a couple days more than straight seeding, but time at warm temps is reduced.

I'm new to growing Green Globe artichokes. I'm late in starting them, which was 05/07/22. First, didn't know about putting the seeds in the freezer. My packet contained 12 seeds, they're each in they're own container. I used perlite and vermiculite in the soil, as well. I placed large ziplock bags over them for germination, which I have 5 sprouted in less than 3 weeks, plus they're outside, but protected. With your video, seems I should leave them in the containers for 10-12 weeks. I live in the north San Fernando Valley, I think I'm in zone 10 or 11. Any advice on fertilization or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Great video.just learned about stratification of celery which i did jot know. Last year i had a fair harvest. I also used the ends of store bought celery and replanted. Will try your celery method soon. I am in MN zone 4b. Do you water the plants with just tap water? I find during the summer rain water helps plants more. I saved some to use over the winter for the plants i brought indoors but now ran out of that. Thinking to melt snow and use as tap water has bleach and other chemicals. Thanks for great knowledge you share on your channel.

I never grew celery either and some say it’s hard and need lots of moisture , water them more once transplanted outdoors …gonna give it a try 😊. Raised bed or large container (root pouch ) ??

I've discovered, a bigger reason artichoke seeds need vernalization( exposure to cold) time - or 10+ days at 50 degrees or below- is that, although they may sprout and grow without it, they may not flower until the second year unless they go through/ have it. I planted an artichoke seed least spring after our last frost, and although it grew slightly, it never got anywhere near big enough to flower. I also think a baby artichoke seedling will not tolerate extreme heat, which it had to endure and didn't make it thru the summer. So I started new seeds in November and December in a raised bed (more shaded than the prior location) and put garden cloches/ plastic domes over them to see what would happen. I was pleased to see after about two weeks both seeds sprouted and seem to be doing ok. I'm in zone 8a and the ground has yet to freeze although the air temp has, but the soil temp has dipped below 40 degrees. So I'm hopeful this year these seedlings will flower and produce tasty artichokes and I will not have to wait for the second year of their life for that to happen.
Thanks for the info. Agree with you completely Emily BH (on vernalization) which is the main reason I have success in zone 5. I've also observed your concern with extreme heat. In Colorado, July tends to bake the plants but as we go into September if the plants are not too beat up, the plants take off again and you get tons of buds. Maybe someone with afternoon shade also has better success during this time. Gary is right though, even if you fail with large buds, the flowering is one of my absolute favorites. And of course the large bumbles love it!!!
I started celery seeds in an aluminum loaf pan. Now I have one of those Yikes every seed germinated situations. Separating seedlings to pot them up is gonna be quite a job.

Thank you so much for your info on growing celery. I love celery and recently purchased celery seed to plant for the first time. I don’t want to stratify all my seeds in the packet so to use the others for future use. Do you have any suggestions to store only the ones I want to plant this spring? Will celery grow in the fall garden? Also I want to do succession planting of celery so I would appreciate your advice on that also!

Hi Gary, can you recommend a fertilizer other than fish emulsion? I really really really don't want to use it because there are a lot of feral cats in our neighborhood. Thank you!
So organic... not sure. There are a lot but dont over pay. 1/2 strength chemical ferts work fine. Even at 1/4 strength. They will get acclimated for a week being moved them in and out in flats. After that, the celery will go in where I want it to be. It can handle mild frost. The artichokes can take a tad but they will be put into larger containers and cold frame and grow that way, till its warmer. Hi Gary. Thanks for all your helpful videos. I feel very confident starting seeds for myself and family after watching your videos. Ugh! Why does my celery seed pkt say to cover 1/8”?! Why does the artichoke pkt NOT say anything about vernalization?! And WHY are there so many conflicting sowing instructions for celery?! If I hadn’t seen a video about artichokes I wouldn’t have had a chance of getting any. I just planted celery indoors today and I covered with soil, domed, put on heat mat and lights. In all those categories I’ve seen opposites for each. I winter sowed in jug last year and they did great, but wanted earlier start as stalks were skinny last year. I’ve got the artichoke seeds (90 day) in fridge and then I heard once up and growing they need 50*F. Oh, and celery can bolt with a cold snap. 😂no wonder people have a hard time.
I dont know. But my celery and artichokes for this year have sprouted and are growing. This method does work. Earn 15% by becoming a Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop Affiliate. Thank you!

Thanks

I'm growing Imperial Star in NJ zone 7 ... I was attempting to overwinter some green globe, hoping they produce this second year. Unfortunately I had a very 'helpful' mother 'surprise' me with some garden work while I was dealing with torn ligaments in my knee...She not only pulled out my dead cucumber vines and tomato plant skeletons, she yanked ALL of my artichokes 😭😭
She's been warned for this year... And her fig tree has been threatened! 😂 So I don't find success with green globe in zone 7 for multiple reasons!
Loveeee your videos thank you so much! I never comment on TH-cam but had to share my appreciation

Thanks for the tip

Good luck

Good luck!

Thanks for the info!

I used tapped water for year with no concern

Good to know

Oh wow but nice on the success!

It appears that you stratify seeds DRY in their paper packet. Stratification is usually done moistened. Please clarify.
It can be done either way. Moistened means all the seed would probably have to me used.

But I dont have another organic... as I just really use fish emulsion

Hi when you move these out before last frost will they be put under a cover or cold frame? Thanks
They will get acclimated for a week being moved them in and out in flats. After that, the celery will go in where I want it to be. It can handle mild frost. The artichokes can take a tad but they will be put into larger containers and cold frame and grow that way, till its warmer.

Hi Gary, I’m growing artichokes but my seedlings keep dying once they get 4 leaves and then a new seedling will sprout right next to it. What am I doing wrong
They dont like damp wet soil. Some of mine did that. You have to have a draining mix and really let them dry.

The bottom leaves on my artichoke seedling are turning yellow. Any advice?
Let the soil dry between watering and make sure the water soluble nitrogen is consistent

Hi Gary. Thanks for all your helpful videos. I feel very confident starting seeds for myself and family after watching your videos. Just a quick question: Is it ok to to spray the soil in the cells just before planting ANY type of seeds with your hydrogen peroxide spray? (After sterilizing soil of course :))
Yep. It works. I actually just poured 3% h202 into some of the herbs. I am seeing what it does to them.

thanks for the video! would it be possible to winter sow celery?
Yep. They are tough though case they have to be pressed on the surface. I would do quite a few seeds

I’ve had my celery seeds long enough now that I could have stratified them already but I missed the memo! Sigh...
Well, they still can germinate fine. Sometimes the packs when getting shipped around get stored where its cool by chance. I would still start a bunch and chill some
